Support BHO scholars

Although we try to keep the cost of a Premium Content subscription to British History Online as low as possible, we know that sometimes it is still beyond the reach of postgraduate students and early career researchers. That’s why we’ve come up with a way for British historians to help each other out.

We invite users of British History Online to support postgraduate students and early career researchers by donating towards a bursary fund that will grant year-long BHO subscription scholarships to qualified applicants. It doesn’t matter if you are the head of a department who can still remember how difficult it was to get access to the resources you needed as a postgraduate student, or a local historian eager to be involved, or a postgraduate student yourself. It doesn’t matter if you donate £5 or £500; anything you can give will go towards helping young academics get access to the research materials they need.

We are developing a bursary fund and will give out BHO subscription scholarships on a rolling basis. We at British History Online are well aware of how generous our community of users can be because you’ve been keeping our site going and growing for years.

Applying for a BHO subscription scholarship

If you are a postgraduate student or an early career researcher (within two years of completing your postgraduate degree), and you would like to apply for a BHO subscription scholarship, get in touch with us! Let us know your name, your institution and program, your particular area of research and how you think a subscription to BHO would help you in that research (less than 200 words). Send us an email with the subject heading "BHO subscription scholarship". If you qualify for a scholarship, we will get in touch with you once we have enough in the bursary fund to cover your subscription.

Support digitisation

For over a decade, British History Online has prided itself on producing high-quality transcriptions of texts. We have digitised over 1,100 volumes and every one had to meet the same rigorous standard. If you would like to support us and help our library grow, please contribute to our digitisation fund. Some series on our wish list are:

  • Calendar of State Papers, Ireland (outstanding volumes in the series)
  • Calendar of State Papers, Scotland (outstanding volumes in the series)
  • Calendar of Patent Rolls
  • Acts of the Privy Council
  • Hansard Volumes

We are grateful for the funding we have already received from the Friends of the IHR to digitise a new volume of the Calendar of State Papers, Scotland series.
