Miscellaneous, 1543

1543. 10 Oct. Simancas. C. de C. 60. 477. Prince Philip to the Emperor. (Extract.)
The Imperial Ambassador in England (Chapuys) has written him news respecting the negotiations of M. de Chantonnay (fn. 1) and the King of England, and M. de Chantonnay himself confirms them. The Prince rejoices greatly at the assurance of this good news contained in the Emperor's letter, the agreement with England being so important.
Valladolid, 10 October 1543.

Footnotes

  • 1. The news of the Emperor's alliance with the excommunicated Henry was not so favourably received by the papal interest. In a letter from the Emperor to Juan de Vega, his ambassador in Rome, 15 November 1543 (Simancas E.F. 505), not calendared here as being of insufficient importance, the following passage occurs:—“With reference to what you report as to the saying of the Pope that our alliance with the King of England is on a par with the alliance of the King of France with the Turk, your reply thereto was very judicious and you will lose no opportunity of showing his Holiness how widely different is our conduct from that of the French King.” Chantonnay, the brother of the Bishop of Arras (afterwards Cardinal de Granvelle) had been sent to sound Henry on the formation of the league between the Emperor and England against France.
