1450. 13 Kal. Dec. (19 Nov.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 91d.)	To Richard Guthry. Grant etc., as below. The pope lately ordered the bishops of Glasgow and Dunkeld to cause him. then a secular clerk, to be received as a monk of the Benedictine monastery of Abbirbrothoc in the diocese of St. Andrews, and to receive his profession; and afterwards, upon learning that Walter, [now] a monk, then abbot thereof, was so old and feeble that he could not usefully govern etc., and proposed to resign, ordered the said bishops to receive and admit abbot Walter's resignation and, if they found the above Richard fit, to make provision to him, and reserve to Walter a reasonable pension for life, to be paid by Richard and his successors. Subsequently, as Richard's recent petition contained, William, bishop of Glasgow, alleging himself to be unable to proceed, appointed a subdelegate, John Arows, archdeacon of Glasgow, who admitted the said resignation and made provision to Richard, who had made his profession as a monk of the said monastery, and who on the ground of the said provision obtained possession of the rule and administration and still holds it. At the said petition, adding that some doubt the validity of the said provision, because in the said later letters there was not inserted the clause empowering subdelegation, as far as regards making execution, (fn. 2) the pope hereby grants that the said provision and its consequences shall hold good from the date of these presents, even if the said monastery, value not exceeding 600 marks sterling, be void by the said resignation or in any other way, as if the said clause had been inserted, and as if the said archdeacon had been duly subdelegated as regards making the said execution; (fn. 3) with provision to Richard anew, and commission of the rule and administration. 19 Kal. Jan. (14 Dec.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 104.)	To John Howell, rector of St. Mary, Burton, in the diocese of St. Davids. Dispensation to him, who is a chaplain of John Talbot, earl of Shrewsbury (Solopie), to hold for life with the said church, value not exceeding 15l. sterling, one or, without it, any two benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if two parish churches etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, notwithstanding the pope's late ordinance [see above, p. 5], etc. Vite etc. (Marcellus. l. Safe-conduct for Thomas Kyryell, nobleman, knight and baron of the province of Canterbury (Cantu[a]riensis), and his suite to the number of thirty. (Marcellus. Vis(a) S. Cousin. L. de Costiaris. de Curia.) [Registered briefly: ‘Similis littera’ (i.e. a reference to a letter of safe-conduct higher up on the same page, registered more fully, with the usual ‘Nicolaus etc. Universis et singulis ad quos presentes nostre littere pervenerint, salutem etc. Cum …) pro nobili viro Thoma Kyryell milite et barone Canturiensis provincie, pro nonnullis etc. [negociis], et cum triginta tam equestribus quam pedestribus, cum bonis suis etc. Datum …' This is followed immediately by:—]

The like, to be valid for two years only, for Hugh Richard, a Friar Minor [who is going to divers] parts of the world etc., and his suite to the number of four. (Marcellus. Vis(a) S. Cousin. P. 11 Kal. Jan. (22 Dec.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 262.)	To the bishops of Zamora and Brechin and the abbot of Abberbrothoc in the diocese of St. Andrews. Mandate to collate and assign to John Atholie, clerk, of the diocese of Dunkeld, who is by both parents of noble birth and has studied theology for about five years in the universities of Köln and St. Andrews, the parish church of Convayth in the diocese of St. Andrews, value not exceeding 30l. sterling, void by the recent death of Thomas de Grynlaw, who was deprived by Eugenius IV for his adhesion to the Council of Basel, and was restored by the present pope; summoning and removing Adam Falconair, priest, of the said diocese of Dunkeld, who detained it for more than eight years before the death of the said Thomas, and still does so. 1448. 17 Kal. Jan. (16 Dec.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 264d.)	Statute, ordinance and decree, at the recent petition of the brethren and sisters of the confraternity or gild of St. Christopher, York (containing that many of them neglect to bear the burdens incumbent upon them), that henceforth in perpetuity none of them who possess the means shall share in or enjoy the privileges, immunities, indulgences and grants made to the said confraternity or gild by popes or papal legates or ordinaries, or any others, unless they bear the said burdens in accordance with its statutes, ordinances and customs. Ibid.	To the brethren and sisters of the above confraternity. Licence, at their recent petition (containing that they lately caused to be built and founded a chapel of St. Mary the Virgin and the said Saint [Christopher] in the place Connyngstrete, York), to have it consecrated by any catholic bishop, provided that the ordinary consent, and to have mass and other divine offices celebrated by priests and chaplains appointed by them; with licence for such priests and chaplains to administer the Eucharist and all other sacra ments to them and to all others who go to the said chapel.Votis vestris. Indult that the confessor of their choice may grant them plenary indulgence etc. (Registered in abridged form: Provenit ex vestro devotionis affectu quo nos et Romanam ecclesiam reveremini ut peticiones vestras illas presertim que animarum restrarum salutem respiciunt quantum cum deo possumus ad exauditionis gratiam admittamus. 1450. Kal. Oct. (1 Oct.) Assisi. (f. 384d.)	To Hugh Sugar, clerk, of the diocese of Bath and Wells, doctor of laws. Dispensation (fn. 1) to him (who was formerly dispensed by papal authority, as the son of unmarried parents, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, after which he had himself so promoted, and who is an advocate in the court of Arches, London) to receive and hold any benefices, of any number and kind, with and without cure, compatible with one another and with the above benefice, and resign all, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases; with grant that in future graces, papal or other, he shall not be bound to mention the said defect.
