(f. 88.)
To the abbot of Lindores (de Londoris) in the diocese of St. Andrews. Mandate, as below. Eugenius IV made provision of the Augustinian abbey of Scone (on its voidance by the resignation to the late Henry, bishop of St. Andrews, of the late Adam, abbot thereof, during whose abbotship the said pope had specially reserved it) to the late John, upon whose death, without having had possession, the said pope granted it in commendam to James, [now] bishop of St. Andrews, then of Dunkeld, to be held by him for life together with the said church of Dunkeld or any other cathedral church, after which the said pope died without having otherwise disposed of the provision of the said monastery. Subsequently the said bishop, having meanwhile had provision made to him by papal authority of the church of St. Andrews, resigned the said commenda to the present pope by his proctor William Mudi, precentor of Caithness, so that the said monastery is still void by the death of John, and is still reserved. Thomas has hereby grant to be blessed by any catholic bishop, who shall thereafter receive his oath of fealty, according to the form enclosed, and send it to the pope, as usual; without prejudice to the bishop of St. Andrews, to whom the said monastery is by ordinary right subject. Before obtaining the said monastery Thomas is to resign the said priory. Ex suscepte servitutis. (An. and G. de Elten. | An. lx. de Adria.) [3 pp. ✗. Footnotes

  • 1. The ground on which is based the pope's claim to order the collation is not stated.
  • 2. On the back of the volume is the modern Italian description, ‘Nicolò V. 1447. Anno i. Lib. i.’ A flyleaf has, in three different contemporary hands, ‘Primus de provisionibus prelatorum et de plenaria remissione anno primo domini nostri Nicolay pape vti .,’ ‘R(ecipc) Johannes.’ and (immediately following on the same line) ‘R(ecepit) et rubricavit.’ The same contemporary description ‘Primus…’ occurs also, as usual, on the bottom edge of the volume. There are no rubricelle, and the text comprises ff. 1–316.
  • 3. In Eubel, Hiararchia, ad loc., from ‘Obl. 72, 26,’ which does not give Cornelius's surname, and states that he was illegitimate. Eubel has probably taken the surname from ibid., f. 33.
  • 4. Eubel, ad loc. has ‘Joannes de Innes… 1446 Apr. 6’ from ‘Obl. 72, 13’; but the Obl. has ‘Die Veneris vite Id. Aprilis,’ as in the Register.
  • 5. Eubel, ad lochas the date ‘1447, Sept. 20 from ‘Obl. 72, 29’; but the Obl. has ‘Die Veneris vite Id. Aprilis,’ as in the Register.

  • 7. This foho 72 is out of place, coming between f. 51 and f. 52. The concluding portion of the concurrent letters occurs on a second f. 72, further on in the volume.
  • 8. ‘John Grene’ had resigned the priorship of Leighs priory in Essex on 16 November, 1443 (Monasticon, vol. VI, p. 552). Under ‘Finaboren. (Kilfenora) al. Insulan. in Hibernia, suffr. Cassellen.’, Eubel, Hierarchia Catholica, vol. II, p. 170, has ‘Joannes Greny [sic], O. Can. s. Aug. 1447Mart. 29 [sic],’ from ‘Obl. 72, 24’; and in a footnote he adds ‘Cui conced.fac. exerc. pontif. in Hibernia tantum. Ecclesia, cui praeficitur, l.c. appellaturInsulan. in prov. Cassellen.”’ ‘Obligationes,’ vol. 72, f. 24d. has, in fact, ‘Insulen. Elsdem die et loco [that is Die mercurii iii. Kal. Dec. (17 Nov.), 1434. see Cal. Lett. VIII, p. 521. Gams, Series Episcoporum, has a blank for nearly the whole of the fifteenth century, whilst Brady, Episcopal Succession, vol. II, pp. 125, 126, gives Denis O'Cahan as consecrated at Florence on 26 Dec., 1435 [rectius 1434, as shown by the consecration certificate, which he prints, viz. ‘Florentiœ sub anno a Nativitatus [sic in Bredy] Dni1435, Indictione13. Dic Dominica q. fuit 26 mensis Decembris Pontificatus nostri etc. anno quarto], and accounts for most of the century by keeping Denis alive and making him resign in 1491.
