To Margaret, queen of England. Indult, seeing that she is not able to visit Rome in person during the present year of Jubilee, that the confessor whom she and persons nominated by her shall choose may absolve her and them, after confession, from all sins etc., even in cases reserved to the apostolic see, once only, and enjoin penance; and that he may grant to her and them, being penitent and having confessed, the plenary indulgence of the Jubilee for a fortnight's visits to four or more or less churches in those parts, as if they had visited Rome and the prescribed basilicas and churches there. He shall commute the labour of pilgrimage to Rome into other works of piety, and the queen and said persons shall give half of what they would have spent on pilgrimage to Rome to churches etc. of those parts, and send the other half for the repair and fabric of the churches of Rome. Confirmation of dispensations granted to him by Eugenius IV, (i) to hold for three years with the said church, value not exceeding 46l. sterling (besides which he was holding a canonry and the prebend of Lanbyhangellitrach [rectius Lanvyhangellitraeth] in Bangor, value not exceeding 20l. sterling), one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, provided that it were not another parish church etc. [Cal. To the bishop of Glasgow. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of James, lord (fn. 7) of Hamylton, knight, of the diocese of Glasgow contained that he formerly (considering that the parish church of Hamylton, otherwise called from of old ‘Cadzow,’ whose rector is dean of Glasgow, was wont to be governed by only one vicar and had, as it now has, a wide parish etc., and that the cure of souls could not be conveniently exercised by the vicar alone etc.) granted and gave to the said church 20l. worth of lands and yearly (?) rents within his demesne (fn. 8) to the said church, that he desires its erection into a collegiate church, the institution of a provostship in addition to its rectory, the holder of which keeps continual residence elsewhere, and the creation of six chaplaincies for as many chaplains, priests, and that he has granted four chaplaincies, founded by his ancestors and of his patronage, to be appropriated to the said church for the purpose of the said creation. At the said petition (which added that he proposes to enlarge and adorn the said church) for its erection into a collegiate church, with a college of a provost and six chaplains over and above the rector, and with the insignia of a collegiate church like others of those parts, and for the erection therein of a provostship and six chaplaincies, the institution and creation of the present vicar into a provost and of other chaplains to be presented by the said knight, the appropriation to the said church, the value of whose vicarage does not exceed 12 marks sterling, and that of its rectory 60l. and 4 marks, of the said four perpetual chaplaincies without cure, namely one of Machan, one in the said chapel of Hamylton, within the demesne of the said knight, one in the chapel of St. Thomas near the city of Glasgow, and one of Lanark, the value of each of the four not exceeding 4 marks sterling (fn. 9), the transfer to the provostship of the said 4 marks sterling which the vicar is bound to pay to the rector yearly, seeing that to the latter there remain the said 60l. sterling and more, and the reservation to the said knight and his heirs and successors of the patronage and presentation to the provostship and six chaplaincies, the pope hereby orders the above bishop, if he find the foregoing to be true, to erect the said parish church into a collegiate church, with collegiate insignia and a provostship and six chaplaincies over and above the rector, and therein, after he has appropriated the said chapels and (sive) four chaplaincies, to create and institute its vicar as provost and six others as chaplains, on the presentation of the said knight, to apply the said 4 marks hitherto due to the rector, and grant the patronage etc., as desired.
