To the abbot and convent of the Cistercian monastery of Whalley in the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield. Grant, as below. Their recent petition contained that they have held for a long time the parish church of Blakeburne in the said diocese by grant to their said monastery, a competent portion being reserved for a vicar or rector, which church, sufficiently endowed, has been wont to be governed by secular priests presented by them as the patrons to the ordinary and by him instituted; that it has often happened that on the voidance of the said church they have, on account of the importunate prayers of magnates and nobles of those parts, and the fear of molestation thereby, presented secular priests as vicars or rectors who could not conveniently exercise the cure of souls nor be useful to the monastery and church, to the injury of the said monastery and church and of the souls of the parishioners. The pope therefore, in order to remove all occasion for molestation etc., grants them indult that in future the said church shall at each voidance be governed by one of their monks, a priest, to be presented by them to the ordinary, and by him instituted, the cure of souls to be exercised by the same. To William de la Vedre (i.e. de Lauedre), rector of Carmichael in the diocese of Glasgow, M.A. Dispensation to him (to whom, already (etiam tunc) holding the said church, the present pope lately ordered provision to be made of the perpetual vicarage of Enrolothan (sic) in the same diocese, requiring him as soon as he obtained possession thereof to resign Carmichael) so that he, who is by both parents of noble birth, and is litigating in the apostolic palace about the said vicarage, may retain for life with the said vicarage, if he win it, the said church of Carmichael, values not exceeding 45l. and 9l. sterling respectively, or without them any two other benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if parish churches or their perpetual vicarages or dignities etc., even major or principal dignities, or such mixed, and to resign all, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases.
