To all Christ's faithful who shall see the present letters. Relaxation in perpetuity (the pope having learned that outside the town of Saxten in the parish of Tenton (recte Touton), in the diocese of York, there is an certain chapel of St. Mary the Virgin, to which there is an innumerable concourse of the faithful, especially because on Palm Sunday (fn. 2) about thirty years ago about 30, 000 men were slain in defence of Edward, king of England, against those who strove to seize the crown and confound the said king, which men were buried partly in the cemetery of the said chapel, and partly hard by it (fn. 3); and that the said king proposes at his expense to repair the said chapel, which is almost desolate and destroyed, and to enlarge it, to the end that divine services may be performed therein), of seven years and seven quarantines of enjoined penance to all who, being penitent and having confessed, visit, from the first to the second vespers, on the Nativity and Assumption of St. Mary the Virgin, and on Palm Sunday, (fn. 4) the said chapel, and give alms for such enlargement etc. If similar indulgence, in perpetuity or for a certain time not yet elapsed, have been granted by the pope, the present letters shall be null and void. To the abbots of St. Mary's, Fermoy (de Castrodei) and St. Mary's, Middleton ([de] Choro benedicti), in the diocese of Cloyne (Clonen.) and the dean of Cloyne. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Thomas, earl of Desmond, contained that at his instance Jordan, bishop of Cloyne, by his ordinary authority erected the parish church of Yohull in the diocese of Cloyne, which is of the patronage of the earl of Desmond for the time being, with the consent of Robert Milis, rector, Philip Cristofori, then vicar, and a number of priests holding perpetual benefices therein, an office a college or collegiate church, and instituted therein an office called a wardenship for a priest to be head and warden of such college or collegiate church, and to be elected by the said college; and united in perpetuity to the mensa of the said collegiate church or college, with the consent of the chapter of Cloyne, the parish churches in lay fee de Athcarryn et de Nova villa in Olyauthauyn et de Kathracha et de Mirosse alias Dunmachcomyn et de Criach alias Gortnacloghy ac de Kyltinrabia (?) alias de Belachnagayn, and the perpetual vicarage of the parish church de Moala, and two pieces of land, the one called Balimolcask and the other Faulaghtyonyn, with all their rights and appurtenances, in the dioceses of Cloyne, Cork and Ross, etc., as is said to be more fully contained in authentic letters of the said bishop sealed with his seal and in public instruments. At the petition of the said earl, warden and college, alleging that the said union has not yet taken effect, the pope hereby orders the above three to summon those interested, and if they find the foregoing to be lawful, to confirm the said erection, institution and union, etc., and their consequences. To William Ogilwy, chancellor of Brechin. Reservation and assignment, as below. Thomas de Forsitht (sic), canon of Glasgow, in order to put an end to litigation between him and the said William, about a canonry and prebend of Glasgow which the said Thomas holds, has this day, by means of his proctor, Alexander Meldrum, clerk, of the diocese of St. Andrews, agreed to the assignment of a yearly pension to the said William of 35 marks of the money current in Scotland on the fruits etc. of the said canonry and prebend [which fruits etc.] do not exceed in value 40l. sterling. (fn. 6) The pope, therefore, reserves and assigns hereby to the said William for life a yearly pension of 35 marks of the said money, which make 8l. sterling, on the said fruits etc., to be paid by the said Thomas and his successors, holders of the said canonry and prebend, half at Christmas and half on the Nativity of St. John Baptist; with the usual sanctions for delay in payment, etc. Vite etc. |

To Thomas Artur, treasurer of Limerick, bachelor of canon law. Grant in commendam for life, in order that he may be more decently maintained, of the priorship of the house or hospital of SS. Mary and Edward the Martyr, O.S.A., by the bridge of Limerick, conventual, elective and with cure, and in which hospitality is continually observed to the poor and sick, and whose value does not exceed 40 marks sterling, void at the apostolic see, and therefore ipso facto reserved to the pope, by the resignation made to him there of Richard Fizadam alias de Burgo, through William Offay, priest, of the diocese of Limerick, substituted as proctor by the above Thomas Artur, who was appointed the said Richard's proctor for the purpose. The pope furthermore dispenses the said Thomas to receive together with the said priorship one other benefice, or if he resign it any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if they be parish churches or their perpetual vicarages, or major or principal dignities, etc., and to retain them for three years only if they be two parish churches or their perpetual vicarages, or if not for life, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases; notwithstanding the pope's late ordinance to the contrary, etc. Litterarum sciencia, vite etc. |
