Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern description in Italian:Paolo ii. 1470. Anno 6. Lib. 1, and on a modern end-paper is Mgr. Wenzel's ‘An. 6. to. 20.’ A contemporary end-paper has in contemporary hands: (i) the description: Primus de provisionibus prelatorum et devotionis Anno vio domini nostri Pauli pape ii; (ii) the order ‘R(ecipe) N., P.’; (iii) the answering ‘Rubricatus [est] per me Nicolaum Casanovam writing and more fully, thus: Rubricatus [est] per me Nicolaum Casanovam Comensem: (iv) the notes ‘Quesit(um) pro Philippo’ and ‘Quesitu(m) pro Philippo Monieti (?),’ etc. The contemporary description occurs also, as usual, on the bottom edge of the volume, but is almost illegible. There are ff. i.–cclxxii. of text + cclxxiii.–cclxxxi. blank.
  • 2. MS. apparently ‘Eeconis,’ of which the ‘E’ seems to have been obscured by correction. The better spelling ‘Exonis’ occurs in the letter to the chapter.
  • 3. Without the other usual concurrent letters, viz. to the clergy and people of the city and diocese, the vassals of the church, etc.
  • 4. viz.: Ego Thomas electus Aladen. ab hac hora in antea fidelis et obediens ero beato Petro sancteque apostolice Romane ecclesie et dominio nostro domino Paulo pape ii suisque successoribus canonice intrantibus, etc. Sic me deus adiuvet et hec sancta dei evangelia.
  • 5. dilecto filio Capbrico Fusco (MS. rather Fusto), Fuscus being evidently a nickname (probably ‘duff’).
  • 6. The name is ill-written, especially the ‘Iny,’ and what has been taken above to be a superior ‘c’ is very doubtful.
