To John de Camera, priest, of the diocese of Aberdeen, M.A. Reservation for life to him (who is of noble birth, and has this day by his proctor Daniel Martini, clerk, of the diocese of Cambrai (Cameracen.), given up to the pope all right in or to the hospital of St. Germanus in the diocese of Aberdeen, which is wont to be conferred as a title of a perpetual benefice of canons professed of the order of St. Augustine, and which has been from of old in the presentation of the prior of the priory of St. Germanus's at St. Germains (de Sancto Germano), of the order of Crutched friars (Cruciferi cum stella), in the diocese of St. Andrews, and about which a cause was pending before a papal auditor in the Roman court between the said John and Patrick Pioti, clerk, of the said diocese of St. Andrews), in lieu of a yearly pension, of the tithes called the tithes of sheaves of the towns de Bernis and de Ecclesmaldeis within the bounds of the parish of the parish church of Abirluthnoht in the said diocese of Aberdeen [sic], (fn. 2) which tithes belong to the said hospital, and the value of which does not exceed 9l. sterling a year, hardly a fifth part of the fruits etc, of the said hospital, the value of which does not exceed 50l. a year, to which reservation the said Patrick has consented by his proctor Alexander Raet, clerk, of Aberdeen. 3 Kal. Jan. (30 Dec.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 39r.)	To the abbots of Mellifont and St. Mary's, Trym, and the prior of St. Mary's de Urso, without the walls of Drogheda, in the dioceses of Armagh and Meath. (fn. 3) Mandate, as below. The recent petition of John Alleyn, dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, contained that inasmuch as Thomas Broune, (fn. 1) a notary public, of Dublin, had sown tares and discords between the said dean and divers of his subjects, and was continuing to do so, and had in many ways scandalized the said dean in order to prevent him from freely exercising his jurisdiction over the said subjects, and had caused them to be withdrawn from the obedience which they owed to him, the said dean inhibited the said Thomas, under pain of excommunication, from having dealings with the said subjects in the said church, etc. (fn. 2); that afterwards, inasmuch as the said Thomas committed still more scandalous things against the said dean and in many ways defamed him, the dean excommunicated him; that the said Thomas, falsely alleging that he was unjustly aggrieved by the said dean, appealed to the archbishop of Dublin, and caused the said dean to be summoned before William, prior of the priory of All Saints without the walls of Dublin, the present prior of the priory of St. Patricks, Hol[m]patrick, in the diocese of Dublin, and Luke Wargug [sic], priest, to whom John, archbishop of Dublin, de facto committed the cause of the said appeal, in which cause the said archbishop and the said priors and Luke were very much suspect to the said dean; that the latter, feeling himself to be aggrieved by the said archbishop (because he committed the cause to the said priors and Luke) and by the said Luke (because, without citing the said dean, he by his sentence annulled the said sentence of excommunication and the whole of the said dean's process in the said cause, declared that the dean had incurred a certain legal penalty, condemned him in certain expenses incurred by the said Thomas in the cause, and inhibited him from taking further proceedings), appealed to the apostolic see, and has petitioned the pope to commit the said appeal cause and the cause of the principal matter, etc. to some upright men in those parts. The pope therefore orders the above three to summon the said Thomas and others concerned, hear both sides, and, taking cognizance also of the principal matter, decide what is just, without appeal, causing their decision to be observed by ecclesiastical censure. 1475[–6]. 14 Kal. Feb. (19 Jan.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 68r.)	To William Styward, a canon of London. Dispensation, as below. His recent petition contained that John XXIII ordered the bishop of London (the letters of Alexander V to the same effect not having been drawn up by reason of his death), to grant that the master called the warden and each of the other canons of the college of minor canons in the church of London (who are twelve in number, two of them being called ‘cardinals’) might hold for life, in addition to his canonry and minor prebend and a chantry in the said church, a parish church or other benefice with cure requiring personal residence, and resign such parish church or other benefice with cure, simply or for exchange, and hold instead another parish church or benefice with cure. (fn. 1) At the petition of the said William, who holds a canonry and minor prebend of the said church and two united chantries in the same, which are simple benefices and without cure, (fn. 2) and the parish church of Wrentham in the diocese of Norwich, the pope hereby dispenses him to receive and retain for life with the said canonry and prebend chantries and parish church any other third benefice, or without the said chantries and church any three other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if they be dignities etc., or two of them be parish churches or perpetual vicarages, etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, and hold instead three other incompatible benefices, provided that not more than two of them be parish churches or perpetual vicarages. 9 Kal. Feb. (24 Jan.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 71r.)	To Adam Coppandale, provost of the church of St. Edmund, Salisbury, doctor of laws. Dispensation, as below. Nicholas V dispensed him to receive and retain for life with the parish church of Kulyngton [recte Kirlyngton] in the diocese of York (fn. 1) one other benefice, or without that church any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if parish churches etc., or dignities etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased [see Cal. Papal Lett., Vol. X, p. 136]. The pope now dispenses him, who in virtue of the said dispensation holds with the said church (fn. 2) the above provostship, a principal dignity, to receive and retain for life with the said provostship (even if it be elective and have cure) and church, or with any other two benefices with cure or otherwise mutually incompatible, any third benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church etc., or a dignity etc., and to resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, provided that of such three benefices not more than two be parish churches, etc. Litterarum scientia, vite etc. [2¾ pp.]

Dispensation to him, who is by both parents of noble birth, to receive and retain for life with the said vicarage, value 4l. sterling, any other benefice, or without the said vicarage any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if parish churches etc., or dignities etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. To William Lovell, prior of the priory called the hospital of St. John Baptist by the bridge of Lecchelade, O.S.A., in the diocese of Worcester. Dispensation to receive and retain in titulum for life with the said priory called a hospital, even if it be elective and have cure, any benefice with or without cure, secular or regular of the said order, even if a parish church etc., and to resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. 5 Id. Oct. (11 Oct.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 218v.)	To John Grene, perpetual vicar of the parish church of St. Laurence, Rosmesdy, in the diocese of Winchester, S.T.B. Indult to him, who is also M.A., to take for three years the fruits etc. of the said vicarage whilst studying letters at an university, and not to be bound meanwhile to reside. Prid. Id. Oct. (14 Oct.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 220r.)	To Simon, archbishop of Patras, residing in the Roman court. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Robert Gudman, priest, of the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, contained that during the whole of his life, especially after reaching the years of discretion, he had been a man of good name, etc., and had openly worn the clerical habit and tonsure, but that as he was recently passing along a certain highway for the purpose of recreation, with bow and arrows after the manner of those parts, and saw no danger, he bent his bow and shot an arrow, which, as it chanced, struck on dry ground and took a direction which no one would have expected, so that he wounded a child in the head with it, from which wound in a short time the child expired. (fn. 1) At the said petition, which added that although he was doing something which was unlawful, (fn. 2) he perpetrated the foregoing not intentionally but by accident, and deeply grieves thereat, and desires to serve God in the holy orders which he has received, the pope orders the above archbishop to grant to the said Robert (who has come to the Roman court for absolution, and is residing there at present, has not wherewith to sustain his life, and desires to make satisfaction to the parents of the said deceased, as soon as he has the means) absolution from the guilt of the said homicide, enjoining a salutary penance, etc., dispense him on account of irregularity contracted, dispense him to minister in all the orders which he has received, even in the office of the altar, dispense him to receive and retain any compatible benefices of any number and kind, with and without cure, even if dignities, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, and rehabilitate him. 5 Id. (fn. 3) Nov. (9 Nov.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 225r.)	To the abbots of Holyrood of Edinburgh, and Meleros, in the dioceses of St. Andrews and Glasgow, and the archdeacon of St. Andrews within the parts of Lothian. (fn. 4) Mandate, as below. The recent petition of James, earl of Morton (fn. 5) and lord of the place of Dalkerth [sic] in the diocese of St. Andrews, contained that on account of his singular devotion to the collegiate church of St. Nicholas of the said place of Dalkerth [sic], founded of old and endowed by his progenitors with a provostship and five canonries and as many prebends, he desires it to be augmented from the fruits etc. of three parish churches, viz. Newlands (de Neulandis) [and] Kilbonchon, in the diocese of Glasgow, and Mordintum in the diocese of St. Andrews, which are of his patronage, reserving portions for three perpetual vicars, and to errect some new canonries and prebends (fn. 6) in the said church of St. Nicholas, and appropriate the necessary amount of the said fruits for their endowment, the patronage thereof and of the said vicarages to be reserved to him and his successors. The pope therefore orders the above three to summon those concerned and inform themselves, and if they find the facts to be as stated, to erect, with the counsel and consent of the said earl, some new canonries and prebends (fn. 1) in the said church of St. Nicholas, and to appropriate to their endowment a sufficient amount of the said fruits, etc., reserving vicars’ portions, as above, and also to augment the endowment of the said provostship, if they think fit, and to create and institute from the said fruits, if sufficient, some new perpetual ecclesiastical benefices without cure in the said church of St. Nicholas for clerks or priests, (fn. 2) so that on the cession or death of the rectors of the said parish churches it shall be lawful for the provost, canons newly created (fn. 3) and clerks and priests instituted to take possession and retain in perpetuity the portion of the said fruits etc. belonging to them in accordance with the said appropriation, without requiring licence of the diocesan and any other. They are also to reserve to the said earl and his heirs or successors the right of patronage or presenting fit persons to the said portions or vicarages, and also to the said new canonries and prebends to be erected (fn. 4) and the perpetual benefices to be instituted, in such wise that the said earl and his successors shall present such persons to the said provost, who shall, if they be fit, be bound to institute them, etc. Decorem domus dei. Non. Oct. (7 Oct.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 284r.)	To the bishop of Salisbury. Faculty, as below. The pope lately granted to all who, being penitent and having confessed, visited on the feasts of the obit and translation of St. Osmund the Confessor, from the first to the second vespers, inclusive, the church of Salisbury (for which, as the pope had learned, James, [now] bishop of Norwich, who was then king Edward's orator to the pope, and had lately been dean of Salisbury, had a great devotion), and gave alms for the repair etc. of its buildings, a relaxation of twelve years and twelve quarantines of enjoined penance. Subsequently the pope granted faculty to the bishop for the time being, and in his absence to the dean, or his locum tenens, to depute fit priests, secular or regular, to hear confessions during the three days preceding and the three days following the said feasts, grant absolution, except in cases reserved to the apostolic see, and enjoin penance. The pope now grants faculty to the bishop, etc. (as before) to depute fit priests (as before), to hear confessions during the four days immediately following the said last three days, and grant absolution etc. (as before). Extension of the dispensation which Pius II granted to him to receive and retain for life with the said church any other benefice, or without that church any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if parish churches or their perpetual vicarages, or dignities etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, provided that if such benefices were parish churches or perpetual vicarages, the fruits etc. of any one of them should not exceed 100 gold florins of the Camera [Cal. Papal Lett., Vol. XII, p. 212], and who still holds the said church, value not exceeding 12l. sterling, and has not obtained any other benefice incompatible therewith in virtue of the said dispensation), and of its exchange clause and all other clauses contained therein, to parish churches or perpetual vicarages of any yearly value whatsoever. Indult to him, who holds the parish church of Petrockstow (Sancti Petroci) and that of St. Michael, Chagesford [sic], in the diocese of Exeter, to take for five years the fruits etc. of the said churches, whilst residing in the Roman court or one of his benefices or an honest or religious place, or engaged in the service of some ecclesiastical prelate, or in the study of letters in an university, and not to be bound meanwhile to reside in them.
