To the archbishop of York, Mandate, at the petition of Richard Tonstall, scholar, of the diocese of York, who is in his fifteenth year, to dispense him on account of illegitimacy, as the son of an unmarried nobleman and an unmarried woman, so that he may forthwith, (fn. 2) but after he has been made a clerk, receive and retain for life any benefices without cure (simplicia), and, as soon as he attains his eighteenth year, any compatible benefices with or without cure, even if canonries and prebends, dignities, etc., and resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. 1475[–6]. Kal. March. (1 March.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 36r.)	To the bishop of Hereford, and the present bishops of Sidon and Ross, [both] residing in the city of London. (fn. 3) Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Elizabeth Lambert alias Schore, mulier, of London, contained that she contracted marriage per verba legitime de presenti with William Schore, layman, of the diocese of London, and cohabited with him for the lawful time, but that he is so frigid and impotent that she, being desirous of being a mother and having offspring, (fn. 4) requested over and over again the official of London to cite the said William before him to answer her concerning the foregoing and the nullity of the said marriage, and that, seeing that the said official refused to do so, she appealed to the apostolic see, and has subsequently petitioned the pope to commit the cause of the said appeal and that of the principal matter to some prelates in those parts. The pope, therefore, orders the above three to summon the said William and others concerned, hear both sides, taking cognizance of the principal matter also, and decide what is just, without appeal, causing their decision to be observed by ecclesiastical censure. Dispensation to receive and retain for life with the said church any other benefice, or if he resign the said church any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if parish churches etc., or dignities etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. 12 Kal. March. (19 Feb.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 45r.)	To the bishop of Lincoln. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Richard Malerey (?), (fn. 5) priest, of the diocese of Lincoln, contained that after Pius II had ordained that all who without canonical dispensation or lawful licence had themselves promoted to any holy orders before the lawful age should be ipso iure suspended, and should, if during such suspension they ministered in the said orders, incur irregularity; and that after the present pope had dispensed him, he being in his twenty-first year, to receive and retain any benefice with cure, even if a parish church etc., and to be promoted to the priesthood after completing his twenty-second year, he, without the letters of dispensation having been drawn up, and when he was still in his twenty-first year, had himself promoted to the priesthood and ministered therein and in his other orders, even in the ministry of the altar, thereby incurring irregularity. At the petition of the said Richard, who alleges that he is now in his said twenty-second year, and is of noble birth, the pope hereby orders the above bishop to absolve him from sentence of suspension etc., dispense him on account of irregularity, and dispense him to minister in his orders, even in the ministry of the altar, and rehabilitate him. In the event of the bishop so doing, the pope dispenses Richard to receive and retain any benefice with cure, even if a dignity etc., and to resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, notwithstanding the said defect, etc. Sedes apostolica, pia mater. 1475[–6]. 13 Kal. April. (20 March.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 78v.)	To William Elfynsten [sic], rector of the parish church of Kyrkinytel (recte Kyrkmycel) in the diocese of Glasgow, licentiate of decrees. Dispensation, as below. His recent petition contained that he was formerly dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all orders and hold a benefice even with cure, in virtue of which he had himself promoted to all orders and obtained the above church. The pope now dispenses him, who is also M.A. and official of the court of Glasgow, to receive with the said church any two other benefices, and without the said church any three other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, and, in addition, any compatible benefices of any number and kind, with and without cure, even if parish churches etc., canonries and prebends, dignities etc., and to retain such incompatible benefices (provided that not more than two of such three be parish churches, etc.) for five years only, and the rest of such benefices for life, and to resign all, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. 1476. Prid. Kal. May. (30 April.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 88r.)	Confirmation, etc., as below. The recent petition of James de Hammylton, lord of the places of Vertranschotis [sic] and Hammylton, in the diocese of Glasgow, contained that inasmuch as the said desolate place of Vertranschotis [sic] (fn. 7) was about eight miles distant from the parish church of St. Mary, Bothuel, in the said diocese, within the bounds of which it is situate, and was almost deserted, although not without inhabitants, and was in an evil and cold mountainous country, (fn. 8) wherefore many of the inhabitants died without the sacraments, etc., the said James, with licence of the ordinary, built and founded in the said desert place (fn. 9) a church of St. Catherine, which the ordinary erected into a parish church, and also a poor hospital. The said petition added that the rector of the said church and the poor who come daily to the said hospital have no possessions for their sufficient maintenance, and that the said James has acquired at great expense certain arable possessions near the seaside, with licence of the prince of that land, (fn. 10) and intends to acquire more, with which and other temporal goods he proposes to endow the said church and hospital. The pope therefore, at the said petition, hereby confirms the said foundation and erection etc., and ordains in perpetuity that the said arable possessions, from which tithes or first-fruits have never been paid to any church, shall belong to the said church of St. Catherine and the said hospital, even if they be within the bounds of the parish church of Kynneyle in the diocese of St. Andrews, or other church, and that the tithes, [first-fruits] and other parochial rights thereof shall belong to the said church and its rector, and that he may and shall take the said tithes, first-fruits and other parochial rights. Dispensation at his recent petition (containing that on account of wars etc., which have long raged in England and Ireland, he has for about seven years received nothing from the fruits etc. of his episcopal mensa of Annaghdown, and that with the fruits etc. of the parish church of Charleton in the diocese of Exeter, which he holds in commendam by papal grant and dispensation, he leads a life of great poverty, etc.) to receive and retain in commendam for life with the said churches of Annaghdown and Charleton any two secular benefices, and, if he resign Charleton, any three secular benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if they be chantries etc., or dignities etc., or two parish churches etc. Personam tuam. 1475[–6]. 6 Non. March. (2 March.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 175r.)	To the abbot of Scone in the diocese of St. Andrews. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of John Blenk, preceptor called minister of the Trinitarian house of Holy Cross, Pleblysz [sic], in the diocese of Glasgow, contained that Robert, preceptor-major called the minister (fn. 11) of the said order, seeing that the house of Berwik, of the said order, in the diocese of St. Andrews, had long ago been devastated by a raid of the English, and was so much in ruin that no brother of the order could live therein, united the said house and the parish church of Betnes’ in the said diocese of St. Andrews, which is annexed thereto, to the said house of Holy Cross, and appointed the said John as preceptor called minister of the said houses as one house, granting that he and his successors might receive as many to make their profession of the said order as could be maintained with the goods of Holy Cross, and give them the regular habit. The pope therefore, at the said petition, orders the above abbot, if he find the facts to be as stated, to approve and confirm the said union and grant etc. by papal authority. 8 Kal. May. (24 April.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 221v.)	To the archdeacon of Glasgow, Patrick Liche, a canon of the same, and the official of the same. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of John Wilzamson, priest, of the diocese of Glasgow, contained that on the voidance of the rectory of the parish church of Aldenthe in the diocese of St. Andrews by the death of John Brown extra R.c., he was presented thereto by the patron James, lord of the place of Hamilton and baron of the barony of Keneill and of the lands of Aldenthe, in the said dioceses, to William Sevese, vicar-general in spirituals of Patrick, archbishop of St. Andrews, who without reasonable cause refused to admit and institute him, but instituted and made collation to Matthew Pringill, clerk, of the said diocese of St. Andrews, presented, as he alleged, by James king of Scots, to whom, as the said clerk untruly alleged, the presentation had lapsed, wherefore the said John appealed to the apostolic see, but has been prevented by a lawful impediment from prosecuting his appeal within the lawful time. At the petition of the said John for the commission of the cause of the said appeal, that of the nullity of the said presentation, institution and collation, and that of the principal matter to upright men in those parts, the pope hereby orders the above three, if they find what is alleged about the said impediment to be true, to summon the said clerk and others concerned, hear both sides, taking cognizance of the principal matter also, and decide what is just, without appeal, causing their decision to be observed by ecclesiastical censure. To Ambrose Repyngdon, perpetual chaplain called a chantry priest (fn. 12) at the altar of St. John Baptist situate in the cemetery of the parish church of St. Mary, Aldermarychyrch, in the diocese of Canterbury, S.T.B. Grant, as below. The pope lately granted him an indult for life to take the fruits etc. of the said chaplaincy whilst residing in the Roman court or other (fn. 13) of his benefices, or studying letters in an university, and not to be bound to reside in the said chaplaincy, the pope's letters stating that he was a licentiate in theology, and that John Lasey, one of the executors thereof, was a canon of London [See above, p. 448]. At his recent petition, containing that he is a bachelor and not a licentiate of theology, and that the said John Lasey is a canon of Wells and not of London, the pope hereby grants that the said letters shall nevertheless hold good from the date of these presents, etc. Litterarum scientia, vite etc. [2 pp.]

Paul II dispensed him to receive and retain for life any two benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if two parish churches etc., or dignities etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased [Cal. Papal Lett., Vol. XII, p. 781]. The pope now dispenses him, who holds in virtue of the said dispensation the said treasurership, which is a non-major non-elective dignity without cure, and the parish church of Manerber (fn. 16) in the diocese of St. Davids, to receive and retain for life with them, or with any two other benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, any third benefice [with cure] or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church etc., or a dignity etc., [and to resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases], provided that not more than two of such three incompatible benefices be parish churches etc. Litterarum etc. [1¾ pp.]

Relaxation in perpetuity of three years and three quarantines of enjoined penance to all who, being penitent and having confessed, visit on the feasts of the Annunciation and the Nativity of St. John Baptist, from the first to the second vespers, the altar of St. John in the parish church of St. Petroc of the town of Bodmin (ville Bodminie), in the diocese of Exeter, and give alms for its maintenance and enlargement (ad … ampliacionem). 10 Kal. March. (21 Feb.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 244v.)	To Edmund de Audeley, archdeacon of Est Riding in the church of York. Dispensation, as below. Paul II dispensed him to receive and retain for life with the parish church of St. John, Berwike, in the diocese of Salisbury, any other benefice, or if he resigned the said church any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if parish churches etc., or dignities etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased [Cal Papal Lett., Vol. XII, p. 581]. The pope now dispenses him, who is of noble birth and in virtue of the said dispensation holds with the said church the said archdeaconry, which is a nonmajor dignity, to receive and retain for life with the said archdeaconry (even if it be elective and have cure) and church, or with any two other benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, any third benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church etc., or a dignity etc., and to resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, provided that not more than two of such three incompatible benefices be parish churches etc. Nobilitas generis, vite etc. [2¹/5 pp.]
1475. Non. Oct. (7 Oct.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 245r.)	To William Ledys alias Petsmyth, a canon of the priory of SS. Mary and Nicholas, Ledes, O.S.A., in the diocese of Canterbury. Dispensation, as below. Pius II dispensed him to receive and retain for life any benefice with or without cure, wont to be held by secular clerks, even if a parish church, etc., and to resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased [Cal. Papal Lett., Vol. XII. p. 524]. The pope now dispenses him, who in virtue of the said dispensation holds the parish church of Sanpford [sic] Peverell in the diocese of Exeter, to receive and retain for life with the said church of Sampford, or, without that church, with any other benefice which he shall hold in virtue of the said dispensation, any other benefice, and, if he resign the said church any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, wont to be held by secular clerks, even if two parish churches etc., or dignities etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases.
