The recent petition of the rector, called the master, and brethren of the hospital of St. John the Evangelist, Cambridge, O.S.A., in the diocese of Ely, contained that the late John Moreys, knight bequeathed to them certain meadows and lands from which he was wont to receive 100s. yearly of the money of those parts, an willed that they should celebrate certain masses by a chaplai in the church of St. Botolph, Cambridge, for the souls of himself and his parents, the late Stephen Moreys and Denise (Dionisie At the said petition, stating that it would be more convenient for them to have the said masses celebrated in the church of St. John the Evangelist, Cambridge, the pope hereby orders the above archdeacon to summon the executors of the will, etc., inform himself, and if he find the facts to be as stated, to grant licence to the said master and brethren to have the said masses celebrated in the said church of St. John instead of in St. Botulph's. Mandate, at the recent petition of Matilda Farnecombe of Wynchelse, relict of Simon Farnecomke [sic], layman, of the diocese of Chichester (containing that for the souls of herself and the said Simon, and the late John and Simon Godfrey, laymen, and Alice and Joan, wives of the same John and Simon, and their parents, (fn. 2) she proposes, with the consent of king Edward, to found and endow out of certain possession of hers in the said diocese two perpetual benefices to be called chantries at the altar of St. Mary in the parish church of St. Thomas the Martyr in the town of Wynchelse, for two priests to celebrate masses therein for ever), to summon the bishop of Chichester and the rector of the said church, etc., and if he find the facts to be as stated, to grant licence to the said widow to found and endow the said benefices under the obligation of celebrating the said masses, and, in the event of his doing so, to reserve to her the right of patronage or presenting two priests to the abbot of Battle, O.S.B., in the said diocese, at the voidances of the said benefices, for institution by the said abbot, and, after her death, to reserve the right of making collation and provision of the said benefices to the said abbot, (fn. 3) saving the right of the said parish church, etc. The pope moreover grants faculty to the said abbot to defend the priests who shall hold the said benefices, and the said foundation, and to compel any contradictors by ecclesiastical censure, without appeal. The recent petition of Thady, bishop of Down and Connor, contained that after he had for some time held peaceful possession of the priory of St. Catherine without the walls of Waterford, O.S.A., canonically united to the united mense of Down and Connor, Patrick Cantuel and William Vnsidon [sic], canons of the said monastery, under pretext of certain surreptitious papal letters prevented his peaceful possession, and prevented him from taking the fruits etc., and that the said William has intruded himself and detains possession, taking the said fruits etc. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above three to summon the said Patrick and William, hear both sides, and decide what is just, …, causing their decision to be observed by ecclesiastical censure. To the abbots of Valden and St. Benet's [de Hulme], in the dioceses of London and Norwich, and the archdeacon of Rochester. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of William, abbot of St. Augustine's, Canterbury, O.S.B., contained that although provision was canonically made of him to the said monastery, and although he was appointed thereto and held it for some time in peace, nevertheless, fearing molestation in regard to his rule and administration, he appealed to the apostolic see, but that notwithstanding the said appeal John, abbot of St. Mary's, Abingdon, O.S.B., in the diocese of Salisbury, acting as one of the presidents of the chapter-general of the order held in England, repaired to the said monastery, held an alleged visitation in head and members, and without reasonable cause suspended the said abbot William for seven years from the said rule and administration, without his having been cited, at least lawfully, but in his absence, and forbade him to enter the said monastery or its precincts for the said period, afterwards compelling him to swear to obey and consent to the said suspension and interdict, etc., wherefore he has appealed anew to the said see, etc. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above three to summon the said abbot John, etc., hear both sides, taking cognizance also of the principal matter, and decide what is just, without appeal, causing their decision to be observed by ecclesiastical censure. To Simon, archbishop of Patras, residing in the Roman court. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Thomas Chepman, priest, of the diocese of St. Andrews, contained that formerly his brother John Cheopman [sic], layman, of the said diocese, and the late James Donaldson, layman, came to words, (fn. 11) and that the said Thomas tried to reconcile them, but that James, provoked to anger, pursued him for about a mile to the house of the said John, and therein wounded him atrociously on the head, wherefore Thomas, fearing death, in self-defence struck and wounded James with a knife he was carrying for defence, from which he died within a day. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above archbishop to absolve Thomas from the crime of homicide, enjoining a salutary penance, etc., dispense him on account of irregularity, dispense him to minister in his orders, even in the office of the altar, and receive and retain a benefice with or without cure, and rehabilitate him. To the official of Limerick. Mandate, as below. The pope has learned that a canonry of Limerick and the prebend of Donachmor therein and the perpetual vicarage of Kylmore alias Kylmahorog in the diocese of Limerick have been so long void that there is no certain knowledge of the ways of their voidance, and that their collation has lapsed to the apostolic see, although Cornelius Omuldona and Dermit Mackyuaractha (?), (fn. 12) priests, of the said diocese, have without any canonical title detained possession of the said canonry and prebend and vicarage for between three and five and for between about four and seven years, respectively. At the recent petition of Remundus de Burgo, clerk, of Limerick, who is by both parents of noble birth, for the union of the said vicarage to the said canonry and prebend for as long as he holds them (in the event of his obtaining them in virtue of these presents), the pope hereby orders the above official to summon the said Cornelius and Dermit, etc., collate and assign the said canonry and prebend and vicarage, value 12 and 6 marks sterling, respectively, to the said Remundus, and unite them, as above. To Thomas Mychel and Edmund Mares, canons of Cashel, Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Patrick Porsill, a canon of Cashel, contained that the prior and convent of St. Catherine the Virgin's without the walls of Waterford, O.S.A., have been wont to let to farm at a yearly rent (fn. 13) to divers laymen the fruits etc. of the rectory of Balingary in the diocese of Cashel which is appropriated to the said monastery, wherefore the roo and walls of the said church are lying in ruin, and the church suffers much diminution in divine worship; and that if the said fruits etc. were granted to the said Patrick for life at the same yearly rent, the foregoing could probably be restored. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above two canons to summon the said prior and convent, and if they find the facts to be an stated, and that such grant would be to the manifest utility of the said church, to grant the said fruits etc. to the said John for life at the said yearly rent.
