May, in the first year of his pontificate, and which had been lost, to admit women nominated by queen Isabella to monasteries of nuns at Soissons and other places in France.

To the deans, among others, of York, London, Dublin, and Canterbury, the priors of the Friars Preachers, and the guardians of the Friars Minors in those provinces and dioceses. Mandate touching the taxation of stipends made by archbishops and prelates, which they are to examine, and bring to the amount necessary for the support of the brethren of the late order of Templars, who are not to be allowed to lay up money or live delicately out of sums provided by the said taxation. Sentences issued by the archbishops and prelates against the master and brethren of the late order are to be revoked.
1319. Id. Jan. Avignon. (f. 87d.)	To Bertrand, cardinal of St. Marcellus. Ratification of the provision made of the rectory of Radeclive, in the diocese of York, resigned by Lewis de Bellomonte, bishop of Durham, certain persons having asserted that the said church was held by John, bishop of Winchester, and not by Lewis. In either case it was reserved to the pope.

12 Kal. April. Avignon. (f. 168d.)	To the abbot of Westminster, the chancellor, and Rigaud de Asserio, canon of London. Mandate, at cardinal Gaucelin's request, to assign to Nicholas Hosebond, canon of London, the rectory of Chilhithe, value 13 marks, in the said diocese, void by the cession of the late rector, who held it as a pluralist without papal dispensation. The said church had been, at the request of Richard, bishop of London, given to Master Richard Martin, rector of Burstede, who refused it.
1318. 8 Id. Dec. Avignon. (f. 169d.)	Union, at the request of Thomas, earl of Lancaster, steward of England, of the churches of Torpedemer, value 35, and Wymondeham, value 16 marks, of his patronage, to the chapel of St. Mary, built and endowed by the said earl in his castle of Kenilworth, to be served by thirteen secular canons. Vicars’ portions are to be reserved.
8 Id. Dec. Avignon. (f. 172.)	To John, bishop of Carlisle, whose income has been reduced by invasions of the Scots. Grant of the church of Honorcastre, with its chapels, value 77l. to be held by him so long as the Scots’ occupations continue. [Cf. Letters from Northern Registers, p. 282.]
1319. 16 Kal. May. Avignon. (f. 183d.)	To John de Ross and Margaret his wife, of the diocese of Ross. Dispensation to remain in the marriage which they contracted in ignorance that they were related in the fourth degree. Their offspring past and future is declared legitimate.
12 Kal. May. Avignon. (f. 185.)	To the archbishop of Canterbury, and Master Rigaud de Asserio, canon of Orleans, papal chaplain and nuncio. Mandate to proceed according to the tenor of the provision made to Master John de Podio Barsaco of a canonry of Lincoln, with reservation of a prebend, that of Lagton Burssard having become void by the death of Hugh de Normanton.

14 Kal. May. Avignon. (f. 190.)	To the archbishop of Canterbury. Mandate to appropriate the church of Wissenden, value 50 marks, to the prior and convent of Sempringham, which comprises forty canons and regulars, and a separate house of two hundred nuns. A sum of 40 marks for their wardrobe which they used to have from the Benedictine house of Passeley, has, by reason of the wars, not been paid for more than fourteen years.
4 Id. April. Avignon. (f. 194d.)	To Robert de Pinchebek. Provision of a canonry of Lincoln and the prebend of Northton on Street (super stratum), which he, when canon and treasurer of St. John's, Liege, wished to obtain by exchange with William de Balaeto, but which was reserved to the pope; notwithstanding that he has canonries and prebends of York, St. Pancras, and Hugard, in the dioceses of Coventry and Liege, and is rector of Bringhyester, otherwise Eston, in the diocese of Lincoln.

Mandate to induce all abbots, priors, deans, archdeadons and prelates, regular and secular, to pay promptly the tenth of one year's proceeds of all benefices for the defence of the king and realm and of the churches which have suffered by the invasion of the Scots; the Hospitallers being exempted.

12 Kal. June. Avignon. (f. 249d.)	To Master Rigaud de Asserio. Provision of the canonry and prebend of Salisbury void by the death of Peter de Sabaudia papal chaplain.
	Concurrent mandate to the prior of Ivychurch (Eideyos) in the diocese of Salisbury, and two others named.
13 Kal. May. Avignon. (f. 256.)	To Roger de Mortuomari, lord of Wigomor. Dispensation that one of his daughters should marry Thomas, son of Guy, earl of Warwick, they being related in the third and fourth degree. This marriage had been arranged between the parents of Roger and Thomas, with the king's consent, in order to extinguish the dissension caused by Thomas's occupation of land in the borders of Wales called ‘Ebuel.’
Ibid. (f. 256d.)	To the bishop of Hereford. Mandate touching the priory of Bergevenni, in the diocese of Llandaff, founded by the ancestors of John de Hastinges, subject to the abbot and convent of St. Vincent's, Le Mans. The house is well able to support thirteen or more monks, but there are only five in it, who are not visited and live dissolutely. The pope, on John's petition, orders the bishop to examine the matter and carry out the necessary reform.
4 Id. May. Avignon. (f. 267.)	To Innocent, son of the late Frederic de Flisco, count of Lavania. Confirmation, at the request of cardinal Luke, of the canonry and prebend of Salisbury void by the death of Gabriel de Camilla, and given to him under papal faculty by the said cardinal.
6 Kal. May. Avignon. (f. 282.)	To William, archbishop of York. Faculty to collate and induct fit persons in the churches of Botlh and Foston, value 30 marks each, Egermonde, value 18 marks, and the perpetual portion of Osmunderly, value 14 marks. These benefices, which had been given respectively to Giles de Redemere, Roger de Heslerton, John de Wodehausse, and William de la Mare, having refused them, as being of too little value and disturbed by conflicts.
4 Id. July. Avignon. (f. 295d.)	To Manuel, son of the late Andrew de Flisco, count of Lavania. Reservation, at the request of Luchin, count of Lavania, of a benefice in the gift of the bishop of Salisbury, value 30 marks.
	Concurrent mandate to the archdeacon of Winchester, and Masters Buxolus de Buxolis, canon of Tournay, and Francis de Luco, canon of York.

Mandate to restrain prelates secular and regular, and nobles, who occupy the possessions belonging to William, cardinal of St. Ciriac's in England and elsewhere, and to defend the said cardinal in the enjoyment of the same.

To John de Britania, earl of Richmond, whose towns, manors, and other places of his county of Richmond, and neighbouring parts on the borders of Scotland, have by reason of the wars been stripped of inhabitants. Indult that his confessor shall during the wars have faculties as a parish priest for the said earl and his household and dependents.
12 Kal. April. Avignon. (f. 451d.)	To John Guiffard, rector of Halghton in the diocese of Durham. Reservation, at the request of queen Isabella, in whose service he is, of a benefice of like value in the gift of the archbishop of Canterbury, to whose province his family belongs, notwithstanding that he has canonries of York and Wells, with expectation of a prebend; on obtaining the said benefice he is to resign Halghton.

Kal. Aug. Avignon. (f. 452d.)	To Haymo, bishop elect of Rochester. Confirmation of the sentence given in his favour by cardinal Luke. On the death of bishop Thomas, Haymo, then prior, and the chapter of Rochester, appointed John de Westerham, Richard de Halstode, and John de Marham, monks, to take the votes of the thirtyfive who met for the election. Twenty-six vote 1 for Haymo, and he voted for John de Bucton, canon of Exeter; Richard voted for Robert de Clothale, canon of London, and seven voted for Richard, who renounced the votes, and Robert de Gelham, monk, by order of the chapter, published the election of Haymo, which by the pope's order was examined by cardinals Gaucelin and Luke, who postponed its confirmation and sent the documents regarding it to the pope. These being examined by Arnald, bishop of Albano, and William, cardinal of St. Ciriac's, cardinal Gaucelin by the pope's order absented himself from the court, and cardinal Luke was ordered to confirm the election. Master Peter de Condolibus, of the diocese of Cahors, impugned the election, and was admitted to plead before cardinal Luke, who finally confirmed the election, which sentence the pope now confirmed.
	Concurrent letters to the chapter of Rochester, to the clergy of the diocese, and to the archbishop of Canterbury, who is informed that the bishop has been consecrated by Nicholas, bishop of Ostia.
4 Non. Sept. Avignon. (f. 454.)	To the bishop of Ely, who when archdeacon of Glindelach held the church of St. Medoc, Kimoth, in the diocese of Dublin, possession of which was contested by Master Bartholomew de Eyteley. Appeal having been made to the pope, the bishop on his promotion resigned it, but as by the constitutions of Ottobon, cardinal legate, those who wrongly held benefices are ipso facto suspended, the bishop, on his petition to the pope, receives the necessary dispensation.
16 Kal. May. Avignon. (f. 458.)	To Thurstan de Holand, who, when aged eighteen, accepted the rectory of Hambiry, in the diocese of Coventry, and has held it for four years and a half. Dispensation, at the request of Thomas, earl of Lancaster, steward of the realm, to retain it, giving one year's fruits to William, bishop of Palestrina, before next Michaelmas.
4 Id. July. Avignon. (f. 462.)	To Nicholas Aron of Glastonbury. Reservation of a benefice, value 10 marks, in the gift of the abbot and convent of Glastonbury.
	Concurrent mandate to Masters Bego de Cavomonte, archdeacon of London, Richard de Plymestok, canon of Lincoln, and John de Abbatisbyry, canon of Salisbury.
8 Kal. May. Avignon. (f. 476d.)	John, bishop of Lincoln, being old and infirm, the pope reserves to himself the provision of that see on its voidance.
8 Kal. Sept. Avignon. (f. 481.)	To the abbots of Westminster and St. Albans, and Master Rigaud de Acerio, master of the schools of Orleans, papal nuncio. Maudate to ascertain the true value of the church of Scardeburgh, in the diocese of York, held to their uses by the abbot and convent of Cîteaux, which is said to be worth 60 marks a year, but which according to the taxation of England is valued at 160 marks. The taxation is to be adjusted.
16 Kal. May. Avignon. (f. 484.)	To the bishop of Coventry and. Lichfield. Faculty, at the request of Thomas earl of Lancaster and Leicester, steward of the realm, to bestow the office of notary public on two clerks chosen by the said earl.
6 Kal. May. Avignon. (f. 487.)	Letters to various prelates, giving conservators to the prior general, and priors and friars of St. Mary of Mount Carmel, for the preservation of their privileges, and among them to the archbishop of Dublin, and the bishops of Glendalough and Ferns, the archbishop of York, and the bishops of Norwich and Carlisle, the archbishop of Canterbury, and the bishops of London and Bath, the archbishops of Armagh and Cashel, and the bishop of Connor, the bishops of St. Andrews, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Mandate to ascertain the place where certain monies of the six years’ tenth collected for the Holy Land have been placed by the abbot of St. Martin in Montibus, in the diocese of Viterbo, which he is said to have misappropriated, and certain rents held by that monastery in England, which he is said to have alienated.
2 Id. June. Avignon. (f. 523d.)	John, late bishop of Winchester having obtained a faculty from Boniface VIII. exemplification of which is here given, dated Orvieto, 10 Kal. Sept. an. 3, to dispose by will of his personal property, the same is here registered.

Commission and mandate to exact and account and receive the balance of the tenth collected in England Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, by orders of Nicholas IV.
