The bishop's ordinance, of which exemplification is given, is dated at Wykham, 18 Kal. Mandate, if the facts be as stated, to reserve a fit portion for the perpetual vicar of Chepstow (Strugullia) in the said diocese, the fruits of which do not exceed 60 marks. The recent petition of the vicar John Davi contained that the resignation by the late Nicholas was accepted by the late John bishop of Llandaff who, learning that contentions had arisen between the vicars and the priors of Chepstow about the fruits of the church, which church the priors and convent held, as they asserted, to their own uses, ordered that the vicar for the time being should dwell day and night and have a room in the priory, be treated as one of the monks, and have a groom (garcioncm) (that the pope may use their expression) to wait on him at the prior's expense, a yearly stipend from the prior of 40s., and carriage (recturam) when needed for purposes of the vicarage, the rest of the fruits etc. to belong to the priory. Dispensation to hold the said church, value not exceeding 80 marks, minister in his orders, hold any other benefices compatible therewith, and to exchange them and his said church for similar or dissimilar mutually compatible benefices, even if elective dignities, major in cathedral or principal in collegiate churches, personatus or offices, with or without cure. Formerly he obtained licence from his diocesan, under letters dimissory, to be ordained by any catholic bishop, after which, when dwelling in the diocese of Canterbury, he obtained, under the feigned assertion that he was of that diocese, the tonsure from a certain archbishop of Canterbury. He was subsequently instituted by the ordinary, on presentation by the patron, to Sufflete, during the year following which he received all minor orders and the subdiaconate in one day, and then, but after despite all diligence the said year had elapsed, was on one day ordained deacon and priest, without examination for the said three holy orders, and without having had instruction in singing, which he has still not had. To the warden called master, and the chaplains of the college, called the chantry, of St. Mary, Metingham, in the diocese of Norwich. Confirmation of the translations, consecration and dedication of the said college, and of the rights previously enjoyed by it. It was lately set forth to the pope on their behalf that the late John de Norwico, knight, founded their college for eight chaplains, one being master, called warden, in the church of Ravenyngham in the diocese of Norwich, endowing the same insufficiently; that in his will he directed his body to be buried in the church of Norton, partly built by him, and, with consent of bishop Thomas, the college to be transferred to that church; that after this, the late John [son] of Walter de Norwico, knight, with the desire of adding to the number of the chaplains, further endowed them, directing his body and those of his ancestors to be transferred to the castle of Metyngham and there buried; that afterwards bishop Henry, at the instance of the executors of the wills of the said knights, and of the master and chaplains, and in accordance with the will of John de Norwico, transferred the college to Norton; that at Norton there was great insufficiency of offices, as also lack of good water, it being marshy and unhealthy; that in the said castle, situate within the bounds of the church of Metyngham, which was held to their uses by the Benedictine prioress and convent of Bungeye, to whom the master and chaplains were ready to make indemnity, there were sufficient offices, etc.; and that by far the larger part of the endowment of the college was given by the said John [son] of Walter, who directed it to be transferred to the said castle. The pope thereupon granted licence for the translation and for the building of an oratory with bells, the college to be thenceforth called the chantry of St. Mary of Metyngham. Their recent petition contained that the college was afterwards transferred to the castle; that they caused to be built an oratory or church with bells, cemetery, dwellings and offices, under the name of St. Mary, Metyngham, the oratory to be consecrated and the cemetery dedicated by the diocesan; and that it is asserted that on account of the successive translations and the changes of name from Ravenyngham to Norton and thence to the said castle, their possessions and their appropriated churches of Ravenyngham and Norton cannot be held by them under the title of St. Mary of Metingham, and that the bodies of their founders ought not to be transferred to the said oratory.
