Mandate, at the petition of John Macworth, dean, and the chapter of Lincoln, to confirm the arbitration by bishop Richard in the longstanding controversy between the predecessors of the dean of the one part, and the predecessors of John Percy, subdean, and the chapter, of the other part, about the visitation of the church of Lincoln, its prebends, the canons and others holding perpetual vicarages and chaplaincies therein etc., the right of using episcopal jurisdiction during voidance of the see etc. Litigation has long gone on, in England first, and afterwards in the apostolic palace, in which latter definitive sentences have been given, the appeal from the last of which was before a papal auditor, who had proceeded short of a conclusion, when the said parties agreed to have recourse to bishop Richard's arbitration, the terms of which are contained in a public instrument (not here exemplified). Mandate, at the petition of John Macworth, dean, and the chapter of Lincoln, to confirm the ad valorem assessment, agreed upon by the dean and chapter, of the amount to be paid by the canons to the dean for visitation procurations in respect of their prebends, instead of the old custom whereby each canon paid the same amount, irrespective of the value of his prebend. Dispensation to hold for one year with Okeburne Magna [value not stated], one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church etc.; with the like condition as in the preceding. 3 Kal. Oct. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 49d.)	To Maurice Odubgan, priest, of the diocese of Derry. Rehabilitation etc. as below. His recent petition contained that formerly, after he had received papal dispensation, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and had obtained by papal authority the rectory of Kamus in the diocese of Derry, void by Simon Ofynnachaich [Ofenadad in Cal. Lett. VI, p. 255], priest, of that diocese, obtaining by collation of the ordinary the perpetual vicarage of Tamlaitanlagan (sic) in the same diocese, he obtained the chapel of St. Mary Loughans (de Lokanis) in the diocese of Connor under papal letters which did not mention that the chapel had lately been appropriated by papal authority to the Premonstratensian monastery of St. Mary, Uytburn, in the same diocese; and that, after holding rectory and chapel together for some years, upon learning the said appropriation, he resigned the chapel, retaining, as he still does, the rectory, which he is now to resign. Ibid. (f. 50.)	To the prior of Dungeimin. Mandate at the recent petition of Maurice Obdubgan (sic), priest, of the diocese of Derry, containing that the fruits etc. of the rectory of Kamus in the said diocese, provision of which the pope has this day ordered to be made to him, do not exceed 6 marks a year, which is insufficient for his support, to unite thereto the perpetual vicarage of Daricauchan in the diocese of Connor, said to be of the patronage of clerks, although at present no patron presents, value not exceeding 12 marks, void by the death of Peter Ochossuechan; provided that the consent of the said patrons, if any, be given. Lately (upon its being set forth to the pope on his behalf that he formerly received papal dispensation, as the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, (i) to be promoted etc. as above, f. 49d, (ii) after having been ordained subdeacon, and having obtained a certain perpetual benefice called a portion in the church of St. Teath (Teela) in the diocese of Exeter, to hold any mutually compatible benefices with or without cure, of any number and kind, and to resign them, for exchange or otherwise, (iii) after obtaining the archdeaconry of Salisbury, which is a non-major dignity, the canonry and prebend of Barton in Wells, and a canonry and prebend of Exeter, value not exceeding 120, 20 and 6 marks respectively, to hold for life two, and for five years three, benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible with one another, and to resign them for exchange or otherwise) the pope dispensed him (he then having obtained under the said last dispensation two benefices with cure) to have voice, place, etc. in choirs, chapters and other congregations etc., as though he were of legitimate birth, and to be elected to all pontifical dignities etc., and at the same time granted that in future privileges and graces he should not be bound to make any mention of his said illegitimacy and dispensation [above, p. 252]. At his recent petition (containing that at the time of the said last letters he held, as he still does, the parish church of Clyfton Canvile in the diocese of Lichfield, and the canonries and prebends of Heyworthe in Salisbury, Sutton in Chichester, a canonry and prebend in the church of Mallyng in the diocese of Chichester, and the deanery of St. Martin's-leGrand, London, which is a principal dignity and is a free benefice, value not exceeding 150, 120, 33, 15 and 300 marks respectively, and that he fears lest the said letters may be held surreptitious, because they did not mention the said benefices) the pope grants to him (who is treasurer of king Henry, and still holds the above perpetual benefice, called a portion, in St. Teath's, the canonry and prebend of Barton in Wells, and a canonry and prebend of Exeter, value not exceeding 20, 20 and 6 marks respectively) that the said letters shall hold good from the date thereof, as if they contained mention of the said parish church, deanery and canonries and prebends, and their values. 4 Kal. Nov. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 52d.)	To William, bishop of Lichfield. Faculty (at his recent petition, containing that a number of the canons, vicars, chaplains and other beneficiaries of the church of Lichfield take part in crimes and excesses which sometimes go unpunished, stay away from the canonical hours, and, what is more grave, refuse to recognise the bishop's jurisdiction in respect of visitation, correction etc., alleging their customs and prescriptions, or rather abuses, and obtaining on frivolous grounds inhibitions from the court of Canterbury, etc.) to visit by his ordinary authority the said church and its dean, canons etc. without exception, and to inquire, correct and reform, punish, mulct and, if need be, deprive; and, with counsel and consent of the chapter or the greater part thereof, to examine and reform the customs and statutes, and make new ones, remove abuses, proceeding by ecclesiastical censure without appeal, and invoking, if necessary, the aid of the secular arm, etc. The bishop and his successors are hereby restored to the office of visitation and reformation which his predecessors have neglected to exercise. 5 Non. Oct. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 60.)	To the abbot of Cong (de Cunga) in the diocese of Tuam. Mandate to cause Cornelius Macaedagain, rector of the rural lands of Lochmeascha in the diocese of Tuam, which lands are wont to be assigned to secular clerks as a perpetual benefice, to be admitted as an Augustinian canon of Holy Trinity, Ballintober (de Fonte Sancti Patricii), in the diocese of Mayo (Mageonen.), in which there is no defined (certus) number of canons, and to receive his regular profession. Cupientibus vitam.
Ibid.	To the same. Mandate, recapitulating the preceding, to make provision to the above Cornelius, after he has made his profession, of the said monastery, value not exceeding 20 marks, void by the resignation, made to the convent, of Henry Maccolyn, canon, then abbot thereof. Cornelius has hereby faculty to be blessed by any catholic bishop, who shall thereafter receive and send to the pope the usual oath of fealty. Solicite consideracionis.
16 Kal. Nov. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 61d.)	To John de Burgo alias Ohuban, clerk, of the diocese of Tuam. Rehabilitation on account of his having lately obtained by authority of the ordinary, and held for more than a year without having himself ordained priest and without dispensation, the perpetual vicarage of Roba in Kera in the diocese of Mayo (Maronem.), which he still holds, having been subsequently annexed by the said authority to the prebend, called the prebend of the small churches of Conmacniculi and Conmacnimara in the church of Tuam, which he was holding. 3 Id. Nov. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 64.)	Relaxation, during ten years, of three years and three quarantines of enjoined penance to penitents who on the principal feasts of the year and those of St. Columba and the dedication, the octaves of certain of them and the six days of Whitsun week; and of a hundred days to those who during the said octaves and days visit and give alms for the repair and conservation of the Augustinian monastery of St. Columba, Cella Nigra, Derry, which by continual wars and deadly enmities in those parts has its buildings reduced to manifest destruction and ruin. 5 Id. Oct. S. Maria Maggiore Rome. (f. 64d.)	To Patrick Omeagra, priest, of the diocese of Killaloe. Rehabilitation, he having obtained more than a year ago the rectory of Leatrach in the above diocese, of the patronage of laymen, by presentation of the patron and institution of bishop Eugenius, on its alleged voidance by William Omeagra's having held it for more than a year without having himself ordained priest and without dispensation, it having in fact become void, as Patrick was aware, by the death of Robert Mares, and been void so long that by the Lateran statutes its collation had lapsed to the apostolic see. Ibid. (f. 65.)	To the bishop of Castro (Castellan.) and the priors of the priories of St. John Baptist by (juxta, cf. f. 69d) le Naenach and Monaincha (Insula vivencium) in the diocese of Killaloe. Mandate, recapitulating the preceding, to collate and assign to the above Patrick, on his resignation, the above rectory, value not exceeding 5 marks, whether it became void as above, or because the late Thomas Ocormakayn held it for more than a year without having himself ordained priest and without dispensation, or otherwise. Dispensation to him, who holds the above church and the canonry and prebend of Llanvihangell Ytuathe in Bangor, value together not exceeding 40 marks, at his own petition and that of William, bishop of Carlisle, whose chaplain and a member of whose household he is, to hold for seven years with the said church any one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible therewith, and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. Mandate to cause Roderick (Ruodricus) Maccrarth, canon of Killaloe, to be received as a canon of the Augustinian monastery of SS. Peter and Paul, Clare (de Forgio alias de Clar), in the diocese of Killaloe; notwithstanding that provision was lately made to him by papal authority of a canonry and prebend of Killaloe, value not exceeding 30 marks, which he is to resign upon being so received and making his profession. Kal. June. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 80d.)	To Henry Willesthorpe, rector of Brafyrton in the diocese of York, I.U.B. Dispensation to him, who is by both parents of noble birth, at his own petition and that of William, bishop of Carlisle, whose chaplain he is, to hold for seven years with the above church, value not exceeding 55 marks, one other benefice with cure etc. as above, f. 69d. Nobilitas generis, litterarum etc.
Kal. June. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 81.)	To John Dalton, rector of St. Ebbe's (Sancte Elbe), Oxford, I.U.B. Dispensation (at his own petition and that of William, bishop of Carlisle, whose chaplain and a member of whose household he is; who lately, already tonsured, received papal dispensation, as the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, nobles, related in the double fourth degree of kindred, (i) to be promoted etc. as above, f. 49d, (ii) having obtained the above church and been so promoted, to hold any other mutually compatible benefices of any number and kind, with or without cure, and to resign all, simply or for exchange [above, p. 56]; and who holds, besides the said church, a canonry and prebend of Bangor, value together not exceeding 18 marks) to hold for seven years with St. Ebbe's one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible therewith, and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. Id. Oct. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 88d.)	To Nigel Bondeby, dean of Bangor, bachelor of canon law. Dispensation to hold for five years with the said deanery (which is a major dignity with cure, whose value does not exceed 12 marks, but which has been much impoverished by reason of the wars which have lately raged in those parts) one other incompatible benefice, and resign it as often as he pleases, for exchange or simply. He holds also a canonry and prebend of the church of Holyhead (ecclesie Castrikylii) in the diocese of Bangor, value not exceeding 3 marks. Litterarum etc.
9 Kal. April. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 93.)	To the warden, canons and ministers of the church of St. Mary, Otery, in the diocese of Exeter. Licence as below. Their recent petition contained that in accordance with their statutes, put forth by the late John, bishop of Exeter and long observed [see Oliver, Monasticon diæc. Exoniensis, p. 268], the warden, canons and other ministers have to sing matins from the feast of the Exaltation of Holy Cross until Holy Thursday at about midnight, during the three days immediately preceding the feast of Easter in the afternoon (de sero), and on the morrow of the said feast of Easter and until the said feast of Holy Cross, with certain exceptions, at about sunrise; and added that the capitular mensa has been so much impoverished that for the salary which the ministers and servitors now receive they refuse to be present at midnight matins as they used to be, and that furthermore the inhabitants would go to matins if they were sung at sunrise or other convenient hour. At their said petition and that of the said inhabitants the pope grants licence that in future they may have matins on the feast of the Exaltation of Holy Cross until Holy Thursday at about the fourth hour after midnight, as they have been wont to do from the morrow of the feast of Easter to the said feast of Holy Cross. 1423. 3 Id. Aug. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 98d.)	To the bishop of Ossory. Mandate to dispense David de Geraldinis, donsel, of the diocese of Limerick, and Margaret Botiller, damsel, daughter of the late Edmund Botiller, of the diocese of Ossory, to marry notwithstanding that they are related in the second and third, and the double third and double fourth, and otherwise in the double fourth degrees of affinity, and also in the double third and double fourth degrees of kindred, aware of which they have committed fornication with one another and had offspring, which, with future offspring, is to be decreed legitimate. A penance for their incest is to be first imposed. Oblate nobis.
15 Kal. Dec. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 101d)	To the bishop of Clogher. Mandate to dispense William Oeda and Gormella, daughter of Meicagyr Mekameyl, of his diocese, who have committed fornication with one another and had offspring, to marry notwithstanding that they are related in the third and third degrees of kindred and the third and second degrees of affinity. Offspring, past and future, is to be declared legitimate. Oblate nobis.
7 Kal. Aug. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 106d.)	To Simon Dallyng, rector of All Saints, Warcham (sic), in the diocese of Norwich, I.U.B. Dispensation, as below. The pope lately [above, p. 203] dispensed him to hold for three years with All Saints, value not exceeding 20 marks, any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible; after which dispensation, as his recent petition contained, he obtained the parish church of Broghton in the diocese of Lincoln, value not exceeding 24 marks, which he still holds with All Saints. He having incurred great expense in the repair of the said churches and their houses or manses (mansionum), the pope hereby dispenses him to hold together the said two churches for five years from the end of the said three years, which are about to expire, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, once only. 2 Non. July. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 109.)	To John Nowell, rector of Stanewygge in the diocese of Lincoln, B.C.L. Prolongation to the term of his life of the period of ten years, about to expire, during which the late John XXIII dispensed him to hold with Stanewygge, value not exceeding 30 marks, one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased; after which, as his recent petition contained, he obtained and held for some time the parish church of Knapwell in the diocese of Ely, value not exceeding 20 marks. He has incurred great expense, as in the preceding, has long followed the Roman court, and holds, besides Stanewygge, the parish church of Wardeboys in the diocese of Lincoln, value not exceeding 36 marks, in place of Knapwell, resigned. 5 Kal. Nov. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 117d.)	To John Heyworth, archdeacon of Coventry, bachelor of canon law. Dispensation to him, who is a licentiate of arts, and holds, besides the above archdeaconry, which is a nonmajor non-elective dignity with cure, the canonry and prebend of Welton Rivall’ in Lincoln, value together not exceeding 200 marks, to hold for life with the said archdeaconry one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. 15 Kal. Dec. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 125d.)	To the bishop of Norwich. Mandate as below. The recent petition of Thomas Coue, master or warden of the chantry of Holy Cross in the parish church of Attilburgh in the diocese of Norwich, contained that formerly the late Robert le Mortymer, donsel, proposed to found for the welfare of the souls of himself and the late Margery his wife and his progenitors a certain chantry in the above church for three chaplains, one of them being called master or warden, but died before carrying out his intent, appointing in his will executors for the purpose, one of whom was the late Simon Howisson, rector of Schulton in the said diocese; that Simon, his co-executors being dead, in the hope that the patronage of the parish church of Elyngham Magna in the said diocese would be given by its patron for purpose of appropriation to the said chantry, instituted and endowed to the honour of God and out of reverence for the Exaltation of Holy Cross a chantry in the said church of Attilburgh for five chaplains, one of them to be called master or warden, at the same time drawing up statutes for revision by the ordinary. Subsequently, upon the said patronage being given to the chantry, and the above Simon and the late Robert Syred, master or warden, setting forth to the late John XXIII that the fruits etc. of the chantry, value not exceeding 15 marks, were insufficient, the said John XXIII appropriated thereto [Cal. Lett. VI, p. 296] the said church of Elyngham Magna, value not exceeding 45 marks, by virtue of which gift and appropriation the master and chaplains took possession of the said church and still hold it. At the above petition, the pope hereby orders the bishop, if he find the facts to be as stated, to confirm the said institution, endowment, statutes and appropriation, and in the event of his doing so, grants him faculty to interpret, declare, reform and correct the said statutes. 3 Non. Oct. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 133d.)	To Robert, bishop of Killaloe. Indult to him, who is a Cistercian and who has undergone much toil in visiting his church and city and diocese, and who on account of conspiracies and other malice which he has suffered when so visiting, and on account of his poverty, has for the sake of the necessaries of life betaken himself to England, where he was born, and who is unable to enjoy the fruits of his said church because a certain adversary is in possession, to hold for life in commendam, in order that he may not be compelled to beg, a benefice with or without cure, secular or regular, and to exchange it, as often as he pleases, and not to be bound to reside in it. Non. Oct. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 142.)	To the bishop of Winchester. Mandate (at the recent petition of Edward Stradeling, knight, nobleman, lord of two parts of the lordship of Compton Hawy alias Over Compton in the diocese of Salisbury, and of all the parishioners of the parish church of Compton in the said diocese, of which the said lord is the patron, containing that the said church has all parochial insignia and rights except burial, and is two miles distant from the parish church of Chireburne in the same diocese, the mother church, burial at which is inconvenient on account of the said distance and of floods) to grant licence to the said nobleman and parishioners to have a cemetery at their said church of Compton. To William Symond, rector of Mursley in the diocese of Lincoln, M.A. Dispensation to him, who is also a bachelor of canon law and is commissary and sequestrator-general of bishop Richard in the parts of Oxford and Bucks (Bukkynggamie), to hold for five years with the above church, value not exceeding 20 marks, any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases; with the usual condition of exchanging or of resigning. 1423. Id. Nov. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 185d.)	To Thomas Beckyngton, dean of St. Mary's Arches, London, D.C.L. Confirmation and grant, as below. His recent petition contained that he, who has been long and is still a canon of Gnowsale in the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, holding the prebend of Morehalle therein, and dean of St. Mary's Arches, has in virtue of the said canonry and prebend and the deanery been for some time deputed sub-conservator of rights and privileges granted by the apostolic see to the prior and brethren of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, and as such has proceeded to divers lawful acts on their behalf, in the belief that he could duly do so. At his said petition, which added that it may, to the great prejudice of many, especially of the said prior and brethren, be called in doubt by some persons whether on the ground of the said canonry and prebend and deanery he seems to hold a dignity or a personatus in a cathedral or collegiate church, the pope confirms all his proceedings as sub-conservator, and grants that as long as he remains a canon or dean of the said churches he may perform all that belongs to the said office of [sub-]conservator. Decree, at the recent petition of Richard Leyot, dean of St. John's, Chester, in the diocese of Lichfield, D.C.L., chancellor of John, duke of Bedford, containing that according to the statutes he is bound, on account of the said deanery, a principal and unique dignity, to pay episcopal dues etc., and that its fruits have been much impoverished by many years of war, for the above and other reasons, and especially because the administration of sacraments and sacramentals of the said church is exercised not by the dean but by three perpetual vicars, that the said deanery is and shall for Richard's life be considered to be a compatible benefice, and may be held by him, without any papal dispensation, with any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible. Lately, on its being set forth to the pope by Ralph Webbe, perpetual vicar of St. Martin's in the Fields (in Campis) near Charryngerosse (sic) in the diocese of London, that formerly the master and brethren of the Augustinian chapel or hospital of St. Mary Rouncevall (Roncideuallis) by Charryngerosse (sic), under pretext of letters of Boniface IX were holding unlawful possession of divers tithes, oblations and other parochial rights belonging to the said vicar, that the archbishop was holding under arrest as suspect of forgery the said and certain other alleged papal letters, the pope ordered the archbishop, at Ralph's petition, if it should be evident to him that the said letters were forged, to send them to the papal chancery for examination, summon the said master and brethren to appear before the pope, and to sequestrate the said tithes etc. until he should be informed by the pope as to the genuineness or otherwise of the said letters [above, p. 238]. Afterwards the archbishop, in execution of the pope's letters, sent to the papal chancery for examination, letters suspected of having been forged under the names of Boniface IX, Urban VI, Clement VI and Urban V, and other letters forged under other names, and the said master and brethren, summoned to appear before the archbishop, have been contumacious. The said letters having been examined in the chancery and found to be forged, the pope orders the archbishop to summon the said master and brethren and others concerned, and to cause the said letters, which the pope sends back herewith, to be publicly denounced as foregeries and burned, to punish the forgers and those who wittingly made use of the said letters, and to cause the said tithes etc. to be restored to the said vicar and his successors. Further, the letters of Innocent VI, which the pope is sending back with the said other letters, the archbishop is to keep in his court, and is to inhibit the said master and brethren from using them or copies thereof until they have proved that they are genuine, and have received leave from the apostolic see to use them. Confirmation of the dispensation which he (who is by both parents of a noble race of earls and barons, and was then a B.C.L. and rector of Bedale in the diocese of York) received from the late John XXIII, namely to hold for life with that church one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign them, simply or for exchange [Cal. Lett. VI, p. 456], after which he obtained the deanery of York, a major dignity with cure, which he holds with Bedale in virtue of the said dispensation. The recent petition of John Dalberd, warden of the parish church of Tormerton in the diocese of Worcester, contained that the late John de la River, knight, gave divers fruits etc. for five chaplains in the said church, one called warden, ordaining that the warden should pay to each chaplain as yearly salary 24s., and provide them with food and lodging, and that on his resignation or death, the warden should leave to his successor a certain quantity of oxen, horses and other goods to the value of 20l. or the equivalent in ready money, and that the said warden and chaplains should daily sing and celebrate in the said church masses and other divine offices, and reside there; that subsequently Stephen Hadfeld and Maurice de la River, laymen, and Isabel le Scrop, of the said diocese, to whom the patronage had come after the death of the said knight, seeing that chaplains could no longer be easily had for the said salary, modified the said ordinance thus:—The said warden John should be bound to keep three chaplains only, and the said chaplains, considering their fewness, should no longer be bound to perform matins and mass with music, but could do so even without music, provided that they celebrated two masses a day one of them being a Requiem, and the said warden John, who had not received from his predecessor the above quantity or money, should not be bound to keep personal residence nor to leave to his successor such quantity or money equivalent. The pope orders the bishop to approve and confirm the said modification of the statutes. Humilibus supplicum votis.

Rehabilitation on account of his having held for more than a year, without having himself ordained priest, the rectory of Cluainmaine in the diocese of Derry, collation and provision of which he received on its voidance by the death of Malachy Oirghil from Donatus Occaruallan, dean of Derry, and John Dermoid, canon of Armagh, who had special power from John, archbishop of Armagh, the metropolitan, the see of Derry being void. Nov. anno 3 [1420] the pope decreed that provisions made by him to cathedral churches should be void if the provisors failed to have the letters drawn up within a year from the date of the provision [see Ottenthal, Regulæ Cancellariæ Apostolicæ, Reg. Mart. V, No. 118]. Subsequently, during the life of bishop Nicholas, the pope specially reserved the said see, and afterwards upon its becoming void by the death of Nicholas, he made provision on 11 Kal. May anno 4 [1421] to John Rysshbery, priest, an Augustinian friar, and John having failed to have the letters of provision drawn up within a year, the see is still void. Apostolatus officium.

1423. Kal. Feb. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 292.)	To John [Bullock], elect of Ross. Provision, as below, of the said see. Lately Peter de Luna, then called Benedict XIII in his obedience, after and against the definitive sentence pronounced against him by the General Council of Constance, but before the realms of the Spains and Scotland withdrew their obedience from him and yielded it to the said Council, made provision of the above see, immediately subject, void by the death of Alexander, to the above John. Afterwards the present pope, in the beginning of his pontificate, having learned the said voidance, made provision of the see, as void by the said death, to Griffin, bishop, [now] of Hippo (Yponen.), then of Ross. Inasmuch as the obedience of the said realm had not yet been yielded to the present pope, John took possession by virtue of the provision by the said Peter, and has hitherto acted as bishop. The pope having this day, for certain reasonable causes, translated the said Griffin from Ross to Hippo, hereby makes provision to the above John, [now] elect of Ross, then an Augustinian canon of St. Andrews, priest, and at the same time confirms and approves the acts of his administration hitherto as bishop.
