1428. 6 Kal. Oct. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 44.)	To the abbot of Boyle (de Buellio) and the prior of St. Mary's, Inchmacnerin (de Insulamacneri), in the diocese of Elphin. Mandate as below. Lately the pope—on being informed by Thady Macdiarmada, Cistercian monk of St. Mary's, Boyle, that Congallus, abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery of Lough Key (de Insula Sancte Trinitatis de Lochque) in the diocese of Elphin, had been guilty of dilapidation, and of simony in the admission of Thomas Yconallan and Donald Micgilliachanaych as canons of the said abbey, by extorting from each of them 10s. of silver of the money current in those parts, worth about 3 florins of gold of the camera, and also in making simoniacal collation and provision to Araltheus Ocathaalan, canon of the said abbey, of the priory of Lough Oughter (Insula Sancte Trinitatis de Lochuacthayr) in the diocese of Kilmore, which is in the gift of the abbot of the said abbey, by extorting from him a like sum—ordered [Cal. Lett. VII, p. 193] the provost of Elphin, if and after Thady accused Congallus before him, if he found the above or sufficient thereof to be true, to deprive Congallus, and in that event to make provision of the said abbey to Thady. Further, the pope has this day ordered the above two to cause Rory Ocaritayth, clerk, of the said diocese, to be received as a canon of the said monastery, immediately belonging to the Roman church, and to receive his profession [below, p. 63]. Seeing that, as Rory's petition contained, the said Thady was, at the date of the said earlier letters, under the greater excommunication, that in the same letters (under pretext of which the said provost deprived Congallus and appointed Thady, who obtained possession of the administration and has unduly detained the same for more than six years) the true value of the said monastery or of its abbatial mensa is not expressed, and that what was related above is true, Congallus having furthermore committed perjury and being a notorious fornicator, the pope orders the above two, if and after Rory accuses the said Congallus before them, to summon Congallus and Thady, and if they find the new facts to be as stated, to declare the said earlier letters and the said appointment of Thady to be null and void, and in that event, and if they find the charges against Congallus or sufficient thereof to be true, to deprive him, and to remove him and Thady, and if they find Rory to be fit, to make provision to him of the said monastery, value, as he asserts, not exceeding 24 marks [cf. ibid.], and furthermore to grant that he may be blessed by any catholic bishop, who shall send to the pope his oath of fealty as usual.Solicite consideracionis.
5 Non. Oct. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 54.)	To Fergallus Ocongalan, clerk, of the diocese of Elphin. Grant for life in commendam to him—who lately received papal dispensation, as the son of a priest, professed of the Premonstratensian order, and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and whom the pope has this day [below, f. 254] ordered to be received as a canon of the Premonstratensian abbey of Holy Trinity, Lochque, in the diocese of Elphin, ordering his profession to be admitted—after he has been so received and has made his profession, of the perpetual vicarage, value not exceeding 5 marks, of Cuildea in the said diocese, void and reserved because John Obeanachayn, [now] prior of the Augustinian monastery of St. Mary, Inchmacnerin (de Insula Macneri), in the said diocese, obtained, when holding by papal grant and dispensation the said vicarage, collation of the said priory by authority of letters of the present pope. Indult, at their recent petition (containing that in course of wars in those parts a number of their buildings, books and ecclesiastical ornaments have been destroyed by fire, and that they cannot easily obtain books according to the rite wont to be observed in their order), to read and sing masses and the canonical hours and perform other divine offices according to the Use of Salisbury. 2 Non. Nov. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 67.)	To the official of Winchester. Mandate, at the recent petition of John, abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Peter, Certeseys, in the diocese of Winchester (containing that the abbots and convent have for more than two hundred years possessed the parish church, called the priory, of St. Mary de Cordigay (rectius Cordigan), to which are annexed the parish churches of Holy Trinity and St. Michael Tremnen, and the chapel of St. Peter de Castello, in the diocese of St. Davids, and have caused them to be governed by two or three of their monks, one of whom they have been wont to present to the ordinary as rector of St. Mary's; and that on account of the distance of St. Mary's from the monastery, two hundred miles of those parts, it would be better if they caused it to be governed by a perpetual secular vicar, and also that on account of the said distance it is burdensome for the abbot and convent to keep persons continually resident at the said churches and chapels (sic) for the collection of the fruits etc.), if he find, the facts to be as stated, as soon as St. Mary's is without a rector, to declare that it and the said annexes shall be served by a perpetual secular vicar, to be presented to the ordinary by the abbot and convent, first reserving for such vicar a fitting portion; and furthermore to license the abbot and convent to rent, let or grant to farm or yearly pension to any persons, even laymen, the said fruits etc. without requiring licence of the ordinary or any other, provided that such lease do not extend to fee or alienation beyond five years at a time. 9 Kal. Nov. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 69d.)	To the abbot of St. Michael's, Mayo, in the diocese of Tuam, and the archdeacon and Cormac Okallanayn, canon, of Annadown. Mandate, at the petition of Raymund de Burgo alias Hubayn, canon professed of the Premonstratensian monastery of St. John Baptist, Cella parva, in the diocese of Annadown, containing that he cannot safely remain therein on account of the deadly enmities between his kinsmen and certain neighbours of the monastery, to grant him, who is the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, licence to migrate to the Augustinian abbey of St. Mary, Cong, in the diocese of Tuam. 2 Kal. Nov. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 85d.)	To the abbot of Boyle (de Boellio) in the diocese of Elphin, and Bernard Oheadra and Charles Ogara, canons of Elphin. Mandate—the pope having learned that the parochial rectory in the rural lands between the two bridges, called of the church of Minbrisgh alias Castri de Sligra (rectoria parrochialis in terris ruralibus inter duos pontes ecclesie de Minbrisgh alias Castri de Sligra nuncupatam, sic) in the diocese of Elphin, is void because Bernard Macdoncayd, formerly rector of the said church in the said lands, entered and made his profession in the Friars Preachers’ house in Sligeach in the said diocese; and the recent petition of the abbot and convent of the Premonstratensian monastery of Holy Trinity, Lochque, in the same diocese, containing that a number of lay persons usurp the fruits etc., value not exceeding 20 marks, of the said rectory, and that the means of the said monastery, the yearly value of whose fruits etc. does not exceed 40 marks, are insufficient to maintain the abbot and convent—if they find the facts to be as stated, to appropriate in perpetuity the said rectory to the said monastery, so that the abbot for the time being may cause it to be served by one of the canons, appointed and removed at the abbot's pleasure. 5 Non. Oct. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 138d.)	To the bishop and Cormac Oheadra, canon, of Achonry. Mandate to cause Cornelius Macsearraid, priest, of the diocese of Achonry, to be received as a canon of the Augustinian abbey of St. Mary, Esdra, in the said diocese, and to receive his profession. He is to resign the rectory of Offycharey and Beandfada, which has no defined (certam) church, in the same diocese. Cupientibus vitam. [See above p. 7 and Cal. Lett. VII, pp. 261, 270.]
5 Non. Oct. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 139d.)	To the same. Mandate, recapitulating the preceding (here with the spellings Macseairaid, Esdara and Offhicari), the pope having been informed by the above Cornelius that John, abbot of the above monastery, has been guilty of dilapidation, simony and perjury, and is a notorious fornicator and, when under the greater excommunication, has celebrated mass and other divine offices, and sometimes absents himself from the monastery for long periods as an apostate, if Cornelius—who has had papal dispensation [see Cal. Lett. VII, p. 261] on account of a defect in his left eye, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold the above rectory, which has cure (in the event of his obtaining it in virtue of letters [ibid., p. 270] by which the pope ordered provision thereof to be made to him) as well as any other benefices—after having taken the habit and made his profession, as above, will accuse the said John in their presence, to summon John and others concerned, and if they find the above charges, or sufficient thereof, to be true, to deprive John, and in that event to make provision to Cornelius of the said monastery, value not exceeding 20 marks. The above bishop is further to bless Cornelius or grant that he may be blessed by any catholic bishop, his oath of fealty being sent to the pope in the usual way; without prejudice to the bishop of Achonry, to whom the monastery is by ordinary right subject. Cornelius is hereby dispensed, on account of the said defect, to receive and hold the said abbatial dignity etc. Solicite consideracionis.
15 Kal. April. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 142d.)	To Richard Worleby, canon of the Augustinian priory of Hautemprise in the diocese of York. Dispensation to him, who has resigned the priorship of Hautemprise, to hold in commendam during the pleasure of the apostolic see, any benefice with or without cure, wont to be governed by regular or secular clerks, even if a parish church or a perpetual vicarage, and if of the patronage of laymen. 2 Kal. July. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 161.)	To the bishop of Clonfert, the prior of St. Mary's, Cluantuasgertaomane, in the diocese of Clonfert, and the dean of Clonfert. Mandate to grant in commendam for life to Bernard Okeallayd, Augustinian canon of St. Catherine's, Eachdruymomane, in the diocese of Clonfert, the perpetual vicarage, value not exceeding 5 marks, of Kyllcouane in the said diocese, so long void by the death of Ysac Omulalayd that its collation has lapsed to the apostolic see, although Dermit Oclinnan, priest, of the said diocese, who is to be removed, has under pretext of a collation made to him by the ordinary after the said lapse detained possession for more than five years; whether it be void in the way stated, or because the said Ysac held it for more than a year without being ordained priest, or by the resignation of Dermit Ymulalayd, or in any other way.Religionis etc. (Pe. xx. 6 Kal. Nov. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 187.)	To Donald Macdonnchaid, John Ocearrnaid and Dermit Magacdagan, canons of Achonry. Mandate to appropriate to the Augustinian abbot and convent of Easdara in the diocese of Achonry the perpetual vicarage, value not exceeding 7 marks, that of the said monastery not exceeding 20, which is insufficient, of Easdara in the said diocese, void because Cormac Macdonchaid held it for more than a year without being ordained priest, although John Macabrecheman, priest, of the said diocese, who is to be summoned [and removed], has unduly detained possession for more than two years under pretext of a collation and provision made to him by papal authority when he was under the greater excommunication. The abbot and convent may have it served by one of their canons appointed and removed at their pleasure. Ad ea libenter intendimus.
3 Non. Sept. Genazzano. (f. 192d.)	To John Clyve, Benedictine monk of St. Mary's, Worcester. Decree as below. The late John XXIII dispensed him, already a monk of St. Mary's, to receive and hold a benefice with or without cure, wont to be governed by secular clerks or of lay patronage, and to resign it, for exchange or simply, as often as he pleased [Cal. Lett. VI, p. 274]. The pope hereby decrees that in virtue of the words ‘benefice with cure’ he may receive and hold any parish church. Religionis etc.

Kal. Oct. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 194d.)	To the bishop of Achonry. Mandate to dispense John Yheadia and Dubeablaid ingean Ychoncubair, of the dioceses of Achonry and Elphin, who are dwelling in the diocese of Achonry, to marry, notwithstanding that they are related, from divers stocks, in the triple fourth degree of kindred and the third and fourth degrees of affinity, aware of which they have more than once committed fornication with one another and have had offspring which, with future offspring, is to be declared legitimate. They are to be absolved on account of incest, penance being enjoined. Oblate nobis.
8 Kal. Nov. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 202d.)	To the abbot of Holy Trinity, Lochque, in the diocese of Elphin, CharlesOgara, canon of Elphin and Dermit Magacdagan, canon of Achonry. Mandate, at the recent petition of Matthew Magglandchayd, clerk, of the diocese of Kilmore—containing that although all the tithes of fruits in the parishes of Cluayn Lochayr and Fareli Cluayn and in the lands of Cuyl and Carrag and Letirchayn in the said diocese, and all the tithes of animals nourished in the said parishes belong to the episcopal mensa of Kilmore, Thady Oruayrc, layman, of the said diocese, appropriates them, on account of whose power Matthew cannot safely meet him within the city or diocese of Kilmore—if, as Matthew alleges, bishop Donatus consents, to grant the said tithes to Matthew for life, under a yearly cess to be paid to the bishop for the time being, removing the said layman and any other unlawful detainer. Relaxation, during ten years, of one year and forty days of enjoined penance to penitents who on the principal feasts of the year and that of St. Leonard, the octaves of certain of them and the six days of Whitsun week, and of a hundred days to those who during the said octaves and days visit and give alms for the repair of the chapel of St. Leonard, Esthermyngdon, in the diocese of Bath. Dispensation to him, who is of a great noble race, to hold for five years with Lanwyhangelecander, value not exceeding 10l. sterling, any benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible. 3 Kal. Aug. Genazzano. (f. 212.)	To William Hende, rector of Kemesey in the diocese of Worcester. Dispensation to him, who holds besides Kemesey the canonry and prebend of Axforde in Salisbury, value not exceeding 40 and 8 marks respectively, to hold for seven years with Kemesey any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. 15 Kal. Aug. Genazzano. (f. 213d.)	To Richard, bishop of Achonry. Dispensation—at his petition containing that from the fruits etc. of the episcopal mensa of his said see, provision of which was lately made to him [Cal. Lett. VII, p. 346], he can get nothing, and has no other resource; and at the petition of Thomas, bishop of Worcester, asserting that Richard, who is a Friar Preacher, is exercising pontifical offices for him in the city and diocese of Worcester —to hold with his said church, during the pleasure of the apostolic see, any benefice even with cure and wont to be governed by secular clerks, and to resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. 16 Kal. Aug. Genazzano. (f. 215.)	To the bishop of Worcester. Mandate, at the recent petition of John Nicoll alias Sudbury, priest, dwelling in the diocese of Ely, M.A.—containing that thirty years ago the commons (communitates seu populares) of England made insurrection against prelates and ecclesiastical persons and temporal lords, went from town to town and from land to land, and perpetrated much ill, and that when they came to the land where John was staying he, being about twenty years old, carried away by youthful levity, like others went with the said commons, but, although he gave help, counsel and favour to the slaughter of a number of ecclesiastical and temporal lords and other commons (populares), neither killed nor mutilated anybody with his own hands; and that afterwards, when under sentences of excommunication etc. on account of the aforesaid, but not burdening his conscience therewith, he had himself promoted to all holy orders and has ministered therein for several years—to absolve the said John, who is also a completed (formatus) bachelor of theology, enjoining a salutary penance etc., dispense him to minister in the said orders, and rehabilitate him. 1427. 7 Kal. Dec. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 219.)	To Thomas Warde, archdeacon of Bath, doctor of canon law. Dispensation at his own petition and that of William, bishop of London, whose chaplain he is, to hold for life with the said archdeaconry, which is a non-major non-elective dignity with cure, value not exceeding 40l. (besides which he holds the canonry and prebend of Willesdon in London, value not exceeding 11l.) one other benefice etc. as above, f. 212.Litterarum etc.
1428. 16 Kal. Oct. Genazzano. (f. 143.)	To the bishop of Worcester. Mandate as below. The recent petition of William Boran and Catherine Bechanp (sic), of his diocese, contained that—although it is required by the synodal constitutions of the city and diocese of Worcester that those who wish to contract marriage cannot have their marriage solemnized before the church except after three public monitions by the curate of the place or three public banns, in case anyone wishes to oppose, and that the curate of the place or other priest cannot, under pain of ipso facto excommunication, bless those who contract such a marriage, nor celebrate the marriage mass—they, being in ignorance of the said constitutions, contracted marriage per verba legitime de presenti, without the said monitions and banns, but have not consummated it. The above bishop is therefore ordered to dispense William and Catherine to remain in the marriage thus contracted, and to grant that the curate and any other priests may, notwithstanding the said prohibition, bless them and celebrate the marriage mass in their presence. 6 Id. April. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 247.)	To John Schirborn, archdeacon of Essex, B.C.L. Indult to visit for five years his archdeaconry by deputy, and receive procurations in ready money, not exceeding 30 tournois of silver a day, twelve to the gold florin of Florence. Meruit tue deuocionis.

2 Kal. Oct. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 247d.)	To John Blounham, precentor of Chichester, B.C.L. Prolongation as below. The present pope lately dispensed him to hold for five years with the said precentorship, which is a nonmajor dignity with cure, one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, etc.; and subsequently, on his setting forth that he had obtained and was holding with the said precentorship the parish church of Warnesford (sic) in the diocese of Winchester, value not exceeding 100 and 33 marks respectively, the pope prolonged the said term of five years, which was not yet expired, by other three [Cal. Lett. VII, p. 393]. At his recent petition, containing that he has incurred great expense in keeping hospitality and defending the rights of the said parish church, and that the said period of three years is about to expire, the pope hereby prolongs it by other seven.Litterarum etc.

To the abbot of St. Mary's, Easdara, and the prior of St. Mary's, Inchmacnerin (Insula Macneri), in the dioceses of Achonry (Alkaden.) and Elphin, and Maurice Oconcobare, canon of Killala (Aladen.). Mandate to cause Fergallus Ocongalan, clerk, of the diocese of Elphin (who lately received papal dispensation, as the son of a priest, professed of the Premonstratensian order, and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure), to be received as a canon of the Premonstratensian abbey of Holy Trinity, Louchque, in the diocese of Elphin, and to receive his profession. 2 Kal. July. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 256d.)	To Thomas Rossell, canon of Lincoln, bachelor of canon law. Rehabilitation etc. as below. The pope having learned that Master John Preen, papal chaplain and auditor, was so old and weak that he could not exercise the cure of his church of St. Patrick's, Trym, in the diocese of Meath, and proposed to resign, ordered [Cal. Lett. VII, p. 399] the bishop of Kildare to receive the resignation, collate and assign the said church to Patrick Preen, perpetual vicar of Tamlacht in the diocese of Dublin, and reserve for the said John a yearly life pension to be paid by Patrick and his successors in the rectory. The recent petition of the above Thomas contained that John, bishop of Kildare, under pretext of the said letters (which were surreptitious, because they did not mention that the said John was holding the deanery of Dublin, value not (fn. 2) exceeding 150 marks) admitted the said resignation, and made collation and provision to the said Patrick, whilst Edward, bishop of Meath, having regard to the said surreptitiousness, judging the said collation and provision to be null and invalid, and himself admitting the said resignation by his ordinary authority, made collation and provision of the said church, also by his ordinary authority, to the said Thomas, under pretext of which Thomas obtained possession and still detains it, taking the fruits. The pope therefore rehabilitates Thomas, who is an abbreviator of papal letters, and requires him to resign. Sedes apostolica, pia mater.
2 Kal. July. SS. Apostoli, Rome. (f. 257.)	To the bishop of Adria and the abbots of Trym and Duleke in the diocese of Meath. Mandate, recapitulating the preceding, to summon the above Patrick and others concerned, and to collate and assign the said church, value [not] exceeding 150 marks, whether void as above, or by the death of the above John Preen, or in any other way, to the above Thomas, who is an abbreviator of papal letters, after he has duly resigned it; notwithstanding that Thomas holds the perpetual vicarage of St. Peter's, Drogheda, in the diocese of Armagh, as well as the canonries and prebends of Asgarbyn (sic) in Lincoln and Glemethan in Dublin, value altogether not exceeding 120 marks, that provision was lately granted to be made to him of another canonry of Dublin with the prebend of Swords (de Swerdis), value with that of the archdeaconry of Kenlys in Meath, a non-major dignity, to which is annexed the parish church of Nobyre in the diocese of Meath, about which he is litigating, not exceeding 400 marks, which archdeaconry, if he won it, and one other benefice, or, without the archdeaconry, two other benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible with one another, the pope lately dispensed him [Cal. Lett. VII, p. 205] to receive, and to hold them and the said vicarage together for a year, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased, and for the said year to hold instead three, and for life two, incompatible benefices.
