Mandate to dispense to marry Adam de Carketill, layman, and Ellen Unthank, of his diocese (in order to assuage the hatred of Ellen's kinsmen and friends against Adam, it being vehemently suspected in those parts that they have carnally known one another, which is not the case), notwithstanding an impediment of spiritual relationship arising from Adam's father having been godfather at Ellen's baptism. Mandate, at the recent petition of the inhabitants of the town of Calyngton in the diocese of Exeter—containing that their said town is so distant from its parish church of Sowthylle that they cannot carry thither for burial the bodies of their dead, sometimes for two or three days; and adding that in the said town is a chapel, wherein all sacraments and sacramentals are administered, but not burial—if he find the facts to be so, to grant that the said inhabitants may erect a cemetery at the said chapel, and bury therein their dead, provided that tithes, oblations and any other dues arising from the funerals be fully paid to the said mother church. May anno 1 [1431] the pope made [motu proprio] provision of a canonry with reservation of a prebend and a dignity etc. of Glasgow, and of a benefice with or without cure in the gift of the bishop and the prior and chapter of St. Andrews, even if such benefice were a canonry and prebend or a dignity etc.—that in the obtaining of such canonry and prebend and dignity etc., and of such benefice, no expectative graces etc. granted or to be granted (fn. 2) to any persons, even if such persons be more diligent in the processes, or have been received as canons by anysoever authority, shall prejudice him, provided that, at the time of the voidance of such prebend and dignity etc. and of such benefice, and for six months before, he have been present in the Roman court; but that in such obtaining he may and shall have precedence over other persons, except continual members of the pope's household named in a certain book of the papal chancery, as if such expectative graces etc. had not emanated or did not emanate. Dispensation, at his recent petition (containing that on account of illnesses and divers other inconveniences with which he is much afflicted it is very burdensome for him to go to and reside at the church of Mayo, to which provision was lately made to him by papal authority, (fn. 4) and that he cannot take the fruits etc. of its mensa) that he, who is a Friar Minor, and on whose behalf John, duke of Bavaria has also petitioned the pope, may hold in commendam during the pleasure of the apostolic see, together with the said church of Mayo, any benefice even with cure and wont to be governed by secular clerks, even if a parish church or a perpetual vicarage, and resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases.
