Royal warrant to the Attorney General to acknowledge satisfaction
upon record of the penalty of 500l. imposed upon George Curteis, a
mercer living in Maidstone for having in Dec. 1698 at the desire of one
Edward Blower bought some Alamodes and Lustrings of one Thomas
Rowe an utter stranger to him, part of which goods were afterwards
seized by an officer of the Lustring Company "who informing the
said Curteis that the said Company was very desirous of discovering
the importers of such French silks in order to prevent that practice"
the said Curteis readily informed the said officer the whole matter
whereupon the said officer went to Dover where both the said Blower
and Rowe lived and seized some French Alamodes and Lustrings,
whereupon the said Rowe in revenge procured a Customs officer
to bring an information in the Exchequer against Curteis when Rowe
and Blower appeared as witnesses and Curteis was fined 500l.:
but the said Curteis is only 22 years of age and was altogether

particular of the manor of Hempholme in order to a fresh lease
thereof to Hugh Bethell at the present covenants and fine of 75l. |

Prefixing: said Surveyor General's report on said Bethell's
petition. The premises were formerly the possession of Sir Thomas
Heneage and were exchanged by him with Queen Elizabeth at
105l. 13s. 4d. per an. According to Mr. Rathbone's survey in 1608
the premises had been raised by the said Heneage to that rental
from 35l. 13s. 4d. per an. In the Parliamentary survey of 1650
they are valued at 146l. 10s. 0d. per an. Sir Hugh Bethell, petitioner's
late uncle, purchased the premises from the Parliamentary Trustees
and he was continued in possession thereof as a Coldstreamer.

and 2s. 6d. a day to La Coste de St. Jour who was upon the former
list of pensions in Ireland: all the said three officers having by
mistake been left out of the late Establishment of Pensions in Ireland
