William Lowndes to Sir Edward Seymore. You recommended Nicholas Wood for the Receivership of Taxes for part of Devon. He is in arrear a great sum viz. 5000l. on last year's Land Tax. The Lord Treasurer desires you to advise Wood to pay said money into Exchequer. Out Letters (General) XVII, pp. 40, 42.
Same to Sir Thomas Cuddon. In an account of the last 3s. Aid you appear in arrear 15774l. as Receiver thereof for London, Westminster and Middlesex. You are to give my Lord the details of the Wards, Divisions and parishes on which the said arrears stand due. Ibid., p. 40.
Same to the Agents for Taxes. The late Treasury Lords took notice that all or most of the Receivers of Land Tax in England and Wales were greatly behind in their accounts and they had good reason to believe that in many cases the same was collected and received by persons from whom no security had been taken or to whom no commission had been granted; in particular as to the profits of the late Lord Preston's estate. In my letter of 1700 July 10 Tr. Cal. XV p. 410 I sent you several accounts, certificates &c. for you to apply yourselves thereto diligently to enforce due accounting for same by Distringas &c. The Lord Treasurer confirms the said directions and you are to lay before him an account of your proceedings therein. Ibid., pp. 41–2.
