King. Since it is the Attorney General's opinion that those commissions

Act of 7 Wm. III. his lordship agrees to the offering of another clause
to be passed in some Act in the next Sessions for confirming the
said commissions, to save the trouble and charge of renewing same
and the sureties thereof "which [as you inform his lordship] will be

for reducing the charge of management of the Prize Office, which
[period] was about 2 years and that from that time to the end of the
said late war he [was to] be allowed a quantum meruit of 2½ per cent. ;
and 20l. for the value of a moiety of the ship Protestant Cause with
raw hides clandestinely imported from Guernsey which he seized ;
and 15l. 12s. 0d. for the deficiency on a parcel of clipped money
returned by him to London by order of the late Commissioners for
Prizes. These allowances are to be made to him on his paying in
the remainder of the balance of 256l. 6s. 4¾d. on his said account.

insuring houses from fire, with a prohibition to all others (save the
Friendly Society under certain restrictions) to make such insurances ;
they having undertaken to pay said 60l. per an. to be distributed
among the gunners and other servants of the Office of Ordnance as
should from time to time assist them in extinguishing fires : which
sum they paid for many years viz. until Lady day 1697 : but they
now represent that the said Friendly Society have not only proceeded
in making insurances contrary to the said patent but several other
persons and societies have set up undertakings for and insured many
houses against damages by fire contrary to the said prohibition and
none of them have paid anything to the said gunners and the undertakers,
petitioners herein, are advised by many learned Counsel that
the said Friendly Society and other undertakers cannot be restrained
from making such insurances by virtue of the said letters patent
and that the grant thereby intended is wholly void and was so at
the time of making thereof and petitioners have not nor can have
any benefit thereof, and since the last payment of the said 60l. per
an. have not required any assistance from the said gunners in
extinguishing fire : wherefore they have desired to surrender their
said patent and have so surrendered same by an instrument dated
July 20 last : the substance of which petition is confirmed by the
report of the Solicitor General thereupon viz. that the prohibition or

Same to same of the petition of James Osterland et al. of London
merchants, shewing that they imported 20 casks of cocoa nuts and
entered same pro alien, and paid 305l. 16s. 6d. but soon after the
entry one Mr. Robertson seized the same and upon a licence to compound
[they] paid 190l. 4s. 2d. to the officer and a capias has been
taken out for the Queen's part "and being informed that they are
not to pay the Duty and a third part of the appraisement pray that
the Customs may be paid them back." Ibid.
Same to same of the petition of the inhabitants of Liverpool
shewing that Richard Nash is suspended from being riding surveyor
there for not taking the oath of 6 Wm. and Mary [? 7-8 Wm. III
c. 2] confirmed by 8-9 Wm. III [c. 32] : pray that he be not restored

immediate service at the Bath viz. 4 new leather cases &c. : and for
orders for scouring 2 pieces of "Hangings of the Apostles" for her
Majesty's Privy Chamber at St. James's and for joining one of them
that has been cut in two and for other furniture detailed viz. elbow
chairs and stools for the Queen's Bedchamber ; mending and oiling
4 bear hides, pieces of crimson, foreign and printed stuffs for closets.

The like for a same of the 10th August to same for the provision
of 10 quarter blankets of the finest sort for a field bed for the Queen's
service at the Bath. Ibid.
Warrant by same to the Surveyor General of Crown Lands for a
particular of premises ut supra p. 228 being lands called the Maison
Dieu &c. at Dover in order to a new lease thereof to Sir John Williams.
Prefixing : said Surveyor General's report on said Williams'
petition for such lease. Sir John states that he has more lands in
his lease than he enjoys or knows where to find and Valentine
Fagg his undertenant states that he does not enjoy a piece of arable
land called Castle Dean alias Charleton Dean containing 16 acres
and that he knows not of 2 closes lying nigh Buckland called Brocksditch
and containing 7 acres. But Sir John confesses that the said
Castle Dean hath long been in the possession of the Governor of
Dover Castle and that Col. Strode, Lieut. Governor in 1679, paid rent
for the same to his father but neither Sir John nor his tenant hath
