petition of the Provost and Corporation of Moneyers shewing that in
the reign of the late Queen Mary [Mary I] when there was no work at
the Mint her Majesty made an allowance to each Fellow Moneyer of 30l.

work at present and petitioners are in mean circumstances : therefore

Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Surveyor General of
Crown Lands for a particular of a narrow slip of ground 46 feet by
380 feet on the back-side of the grove of elms adjoining to St. James's
Park in order to a lease thereof to the Earl of Rochester for 50 years
at 10l. per an. rent and fine of 250l.
Prefixing : said Surveyor General's report on said Earl's petition
for same. The ground is bounded on the south by said grove ; on the
west by a drying yard attached to Prince Rupert's house ; on the
east by the old spring and on the north by the backside of certain
houses fronting the street leading from Charing Cross to the Pall
Mall. On part of the ground there now stands a small house and
some sheds for coach houses and stables which are so much in decay
that they are in danger of falling. The ground was formerly in the
possession of Prince Rupert together with the said drying yard and
a small kitchen garden extending westward to the passage formerly
leading into St. James's Park by the Royal Garden, and ever since
his death the premises have been enjoyed by the Earl of Sussex
without any title from the Crown. For I find that the said Earl
petitioned for them in 1689 alleging that Charles II promised him
a grant thereof without rent : which petition being referred to the
then Surveyor General, in his absence Mr. Tailer reported that the
premises with an addition of 11 feet 9 inches in breadth at the west
end and 20 feet at the east end, to be taken out of the said grove
(as his lordship then desired, to make it more straight and commodious)
was valued by him at 4s. the foot as building ground
on the greatest improvement the premises were capable of. The
present petitioner has paid the Earl of Sussex 30l. per an. rent for
same for many years. He intends to continue the premises for a

with the Dutch claimers in order to avoid possible disputes with the
