Report to Treasurer Godolphin from William Blathwayt as Auditor General of the Plantations on the accompt transmitted from New England July 30 last of payments made out of the pirate gold belonging to Quelch and company ut supra pp. 501-2, being 366l. 12s. 4d. allowed of by Col. Dudley and other cravings amounting to 515l. 18s. 0d. I think the said account of charges and cravings is very large in most of the particulars and greater by one third than would be allowed in England for the like service. But forasmuch as the prosecution of pirates is carried on with great difficulty in the Plantations and more especially in the Charter Government in New England and elsewhere, piracy being too much countenanced or at least connived at in those parts for the encouragement of the importation of bullion and other such goods, I think the service could not have been so well carried on by Col. Dudley without an extraordinary expense. Besides, New England money is one fourth part less in value than sterling. As to the balance coming to the Queen a letter was sent 28 March 1705 to Col. Dudley to send over the value after deducting the charge of prosecuting, so there is no doubt of a suitable return from him by the soonest opportunity. Out Letters (Plantations Auditor) II, pp. 289-90, 294-5.
