Treasury reference to the Agents for Taxes of the petition of Isaac Caillovell of London merchant shewing that he had dealings with Jos. & Geo. Newell & gave them 2 notes for 158l., which were taken on the extent against them, for which petitioner is sued though the Newells are in his debt, on balance, to the extent of 472l.: therefore prays not to be prosecuted for the said notes. Dec. 13. Money warrant for 20l. to John Taylor for half a year due Dec 1 inst on his salary as Keeper of her Majesty's Water Engine at Windsor. (The letter of disposition dated 1708–9 Jan 5 directs the payment to the executors of the said Taylor late deceased.) Money Book XIX, p. 417. Order Book VII, p. 205. Disposition Book XIX, p. 248.
Treasury reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Capt. Jo[h]n Hanway of her Majesty's ship Plymouth, which took the St John Baptist prize laden with Newfoundland fish, praying liberty to ship off the said fish without landing or paying any Duty. Reference Book VIII, p. 339.
Same to same of the petition Capt. Hosier, of her Majesty's ship Salisbury, shewing that he took as prize the James of St Malo, loaded with Newfoundland fish & praying as above. Ibid.
Dec. 14. William Lowndes to the Agents for Taxes. On your report of the 10th inst relative to the petition of Sir Richard Allen et al, securities of Samuel Pacey, late Receiver General for Co Sussex, the Lord Treasurer agrees to accept 1000l. before Xmas & 500l. a month for 3 successive months provided they transmit to the Treasury Office within 14 days the method they propose for paying the remainder of the said debt. Treasury reference to the Attorney General of the petition of Robert Peacock, William Robinson & Robert Chapman on behalf of themselves & the rest of the inhabitants of the Hundred of Wychford in the Isle of Ely shewing that at the summer assizes 1705 William Wye recovered judgment for 234l. on a statute of Hue & Cry for a pretended robbery, which [judgment] was levied on petitioners & the Hundred: but upon a trial at last summer assizes it appeared [as] a conspiracy of said Wye & one Baxter his servant, there having been no such robbery, and Wye was fined 234l. & Baxter 20l.: therefore petitioners pray to be reimbursed the 80l. spent by them on said prosecution. Dec. 14. Treasurer Godolphin to Baron Smith [a Baron of the Exchequer in Scotland]. In reply to yours of the 2nd inst, since the Lord Advocate insists on a positive order for prosecuting the late Farmers of the Customs in Scotland I have by this night's post written to him to use all diligence therein, in regard the Parliament last winter took notice of it and may perhaps censure anything that looks like a neglect in this matter.
As to the signatures which you say are stopped because not countersigned by me I hereby signify my consent to the passing thereof, especially since you represent that they are but two or three & because 'tis probable the persons concerned might not be acquainted with the forms the [Scotch Exchequer] Court is to use. Nevertheless in all like cases for the future the method lately signified is to be observed. As soon as I knew of my Lord Seafield's [word omitted] I immediately took care that nobody should be put into his place but yourself and when the person is pitched upon to make the fifth Baron a commission will pass to appoint you to be the First or Chief Baron. Same to the Lord Advocate to use all diligence (in conjunction with Mr. Carmichael, Solicitor General for Scotland) in the prosecution of the Customs Farmers in Scotland as above & to let me know from time to time what progress is made therein; all matters relating to the revenue since the Union being [now] immediately under my care. Letter of direction for 11972l. to James Brydges, Paymaster of the Forces Abroad: out of the fifth payment to be made by the East India Company before Jan 12 next: as in part of 500000l. for the service of Spain &c: & is intended to be applied by him to answer bills of exchange drawn on him by Mr. Mead, Deputy Paymaster of the Forces in Spain, for moneys taken up by him at Barcelona for the use of the Foreign Forces there in the pay of her Majesty.
In the margin: in case there be not sufficient of the said fifth payment in the Exchequer the residue remaining unsatisfied on this letter may be paid out of the sixth or last payment to be made by the East India Company. Disposition Book XIX, p. 241.

Treasury reference to Mr. Walpole & the Comptrollers of Army Accounts of the petition of Col. Kitson & Major Cole & the several Officers of Col. Hans Hamilton's Regiment shewing that they were detained at Alicante (after their reduction) for a convoy till the battle of Almanza & then received Lord Galway's orders to continue there for the defence of that place; that they continued there till June 11 last at which time they received orders to return to Great Britain to raise their Regiments again but not having the opportunity of coming in her Majesty's ships were obliged to hire vessels, for which they paid 176l. 15. 6: therefore praying to be reimbursed same in regard it was for her Majesty's service that they were detained after the appointed convoy sailed. Treasury reference to the Principal Officers of the Works of the petition of Richard Churchill plumber shewing that he has been concerned in very considerable works for several persons of quality, as he is at this time in part of the work at Woodstock: therefore prays to succeed Mr. Atherton deceased as Sergeant Plumber to her Majesty. Reference Book VIII, p. 340.
Same to same of the petition of Joseph Roberts for the same place, his late father having served as Sergeant Plumber at Windsor for 3 years & resigned same to him which he now enjoys & there is 2000l. owing to him & his said father for work done in the late & present reign. Ibid.
Dec. 16. Same to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Richard Mead in behalf of Capt. William Bews et al of the Ailbermarle shewing that after a tedious voyage the said ship coming from the East Indies was cast away & very little of the goods belonging to the “said petitioners” was saved & that in so damaged state that if brought to London they will not bear the charge of the Queen's Duties there; therefore praying leave to sell same at Plymouth on payment of Duty, none of them being prohibited goods. Ibid.
Same to same of the petition of Bigley Wilson of London merchant shewing that as a trader in wines for 25 years he has paid above 43000l. in Duties in 12 years but within 4 years last past has been reduced by great losses at sea & is now sued on some bonds but has paid the greatest part thereof & hopes in a little time to pay the remainder: therefore praying remission of interest thereon. Ibid.
[Dec. 17.] Unfinished warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Receipt to distribute & apply the sum of 86783l. 5. 4 to Deficient Funds as follows, the said sum representing the income between Nov 19 last & Dec 17 inst from branches of the revenue as follows viz 110l. from Whale fins; 27968l. 3. 5 from New Customs; 5900l. 19. 5½ from Additional Impositions; 4442l. 7. 4 from Vellum; 37945l. 10. 1 from Continued Impositions; 61l. 7. 3 from Salt Duties before 1 August 1706 being a surplus from the first General Mortgage [or Deficiencies Sinking Fund scheme]; 1667l. 6. 7½ from ditto since that date; 8676l. 7. 2 from Windows; 11l. 4. 0 from Marriages, being a surplus as above: the said distribution & application to be hereby as follows.

William Lowndes to Lord Halifax [Auditor of the Receipt] to report on the enclosed petition [missing] of John Meakins of London brewer relating to a lost annuity order. Out Letters (General) XIX, p. 23.
Same to the Comptrollers of Army Accounts to report on the enclosed memorial [missing] of Lieut. Gen. Stewart (with a letter from the Earl of Galway) concerning the losses sustained by his Regiment at the Castle D' Vide & the battle of Almanza, & praying relief thereon as against the charges on said Regiment for recruits, arms, transportation, respits &c. (In the margin: this letter was writ over again the 21 Dec & directed to Mr. Brydges & the said Comptrollers.) Ibid.

Royal warrant dated St James's to John, Visct FitzHardinge, Treasurer of the Chamber, to pay 3180l. 8. 3 to Phil Harris, the Queen's locksmith in ordinary, for work by him done between 1702 July 18 & 1706 March 25 at the royal palaces of Whitehall, Kensington, Windsor Castle, Hampton Court, Newmarket, St. James's & the House of Peers at Westminster. Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Transports Commissioners to pay 14000l. to James Brydges, Paymaster of the Forces Abroad, for so much paid by him on divers bills of exchange drawn from Ostend towards the charge of transports & other contingencies relating to the Troops transported thence to the North [of England] on occasion of the late invasion of the French, “notwithstanding the regular vouchers are not yet returned; but you are to take care to receive from the said Mr. Brydges the bills of exchange drawn for the said sum and to set the persons who drew the same in super [for same] till they have returned the regular vouchers for their discharge.”
Prefixing: report by said Commissioners. The accounts sent to us from said Brydges' Office of the above transportation are only general accounts without any vouchers, one amounting to 140510l. 10. 0 signed by Major Gen. Cadogan, the other for 12347l. 14. 0 advanced by Mr. Sweet. We are very much importuned for the above 14000l. but have not yet regularly examined the charges as [we are] directed to do by the Treasury letter of Nov 25 last. Are we to pay the 14000l. ? Dec. 20. William Lowndes to the Auditor of the Receipt to deliver to the abovesaid James Brydges the orders on Malt anno 1708 directed on Sept 16 to be made out for him but which were then directed to be retained in your office pending further instructions from the Lord Treasurer ut supra, pp. 391–2. Same to the Attorney General. The Lord Treasurer desires you to give warrant to the Clerk of the Petty Bag for a commission of enquiry to Robert Harvey & 4 others detailed into escheated lands late in the possession of Mr. Vanhaesdonck; in accordance with the report from the Surveyor General of Crown Lands on the petition of Edmund Bentley for a lease thereof. Royal warrant dated St James's to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal for a grant to James, Earl of Seafield of a pension of 3000l. per an as from Sept 29 last: out of the Post Office revenue, for 99 years terminable on the life of the Queen. Royal sign manual for 2599l. 14. 9 to Sir David Nairn, whereof 1500l is to be immediately paid back into the Receipt of the Exchequer on account of the Excise Commissioners of Scotland for so much by them advanced to Sir James Stuart, Advocate General there, towards defraying the charge of the Circuit Courts held in Oct last & for the charge of criminal prosecutions: & the remaining 1099l. 14. 9 to be remitted by said Nairn to said Stuart to satisfy what he is further in disburse on account of the said Circuit Courts & prosecutions.
