Same for 60l. to Roger Millart, one of the clerks to the Agents for Taxes, for a 54 days' journey to Chester, Denbigh and Flint in which he assisted Thomas Lloyd, Receiver General for the said counties, to get in 24,016l. 18s. 0d. arrears of taxes there annis 1707 and 1708 which arrears had been in dispute between said Lloyd and said counties, the counties saying same had been paid and Lloyd saying the contrary whereupon said Millart was sent thither and the same to the above total was paid in Millart's presence and he brought up 19,016l. 10s. 0d. thereof with a guard and paid it into the Receipt the 16th inst. and 5,000l. by bills, which was a very good service and well executed by him.

The Lord Treasurer directs you to assign (out of the Malt tallies anno 1709 put into your hands June 15 last) 6,093l. 10s. 0d. to the General Officers serving in Flanders in 1708 to make up their pay according to the stations in which they served ut supra, p. 247: according to the power given by the clause for appropriating the public funds in the [various] Acts [of Supply] of the last Session. The Lord Treasurer will warrant 6 per cent. interest thereon in the usual way. “But you are to take care that as the said tallies and orders be delivered out to the said General Officers you have some assurance from them that they shall not be disposed of so as to be discounted to the prejudice of the public credit.” Disposition Book XX, p. 25.

The Lord Treasurer directs you to assign for services ut supra, p. 271, the 10,828l. 19s. 8d. directed to you the 22nd inst. ut supra, p. 209, in Exchequer Bills, and the further sum of 21,657l. 19s. 4d. of the Malt tallies anno 1709 which were put into your hands June 15 last: making a total sum of 32,486l. 19s. 0d.: in part of 301,748l. 7s. 11¼d. for extraordinaries of the war. J. Taylour [in the absence of William Lowndes] to Thomas Morrice. The Lord Treasurer is informed by Mr. Stanhope's letters that notwithstanding the care that has been taken to supply the troops in Spain as well from Lisbon as by way of Italy yet many times those supplies do not come so early as the service requires. I am therefore to repeat to you the orders you have already received of using all means and taking all opportunities you can to send up [to the front] the money which has been and may be remitted to you for those Forces. And I am likewise to acquaint you that by this post orders are sent from my Lord High Admiral to Sir John Jennings to appoint some of the squadron under his command now at Lisbon to take what money you can get ready for that purpose and carry it up to Barcelona. Dr. Graham of 80 ounces of gilt plate as a present from the Queen at the christening of his child: to an estimate of 40l.

J. Taylour (in the absence of William Lowndes) to the Navy Commissioners. The Lord Treasurer has considered your report of 1708 May 8 relating to bills on the old debt of the Navy which have been directed to be paid out of tallies and orders on the second 2s. Aid but [which are] not claimed or called for. You are of opinion same may be applied to the payment of such other bills as are next in course on the said old debt. Before the Lord Treasurer gives direction in this matter he desires an account of the particulars of the said old debt as it stands at this time unsatisfied distinguishing those in course and not called for, from the remainder. J. Taylour (in the absence of William Lowndes) to the Principal Officers of the Ordnance. The Lord Treasurer is informed by your letter of the 28th inst. that the tallies for 33,500l. on the eleventh 4s. Aid anno 1708 remaining in the hands of the Treasurer and Paymaster of the Ordnance (and payable in course after 1,650,674l. 7s. 2d. on said Aid) can now be disposed of at par. You are so to dispose of them, to enable you to pay artificers and to discharge several other services of the Ordnance which are pressing. The Lord Treasurer will direct 5 per cent. interest thereon and the total is to be placed to account as follows:

Treasury reference to Mr. Walpole [Secretary at War], of the petition of Lieut.-Col. Francis Alexander setting forth the loss of his equipage to the value of 500l. when made a prisoner at the battle of Almanza; that understanding the French and Spanish language he presumes he might have disengaged himself from the enemy and saved his equipage but that he was sent to the Duke of Berwick to procure terms for the body of men that made their retreat with petitioner: therefore praying consideration of his losses which were the greatest part of his fortune. Please represent this to his Excellency so that he may return his thoughts what ought to be done thereon; to wit the petitions of the Earl of Roscommon; Mr. Griffith; Capt. James Pelher; the widows La Chappel and Bruneval; likewise as to Lady Russell's pension of 200l. per an. from the date of her husband Sir William Russell's death. What was the date of his death?
