Aug. 19 Royal warrant dated same to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal to appoint Nehemiah Arnold, Charles Blunt, William Borret and 42 others, detailed, to be Managers of the 1712 Lottery and Adventure ("Managers or Directors for preparing and delivering of tickets or receipts and to oversee the drawing of lots": with full power to meet and prepare books, tickets and receipts and to oversee the drawing of lots &c.), as by the Act of the present Session 10 Anne, c. 18, for Duties on soap &c. Queen's Warrant Book XXV, pp. 286–8.
Royal sign manual for 845,367l. 4s. 3¾d. to James Brydges, Paymaster of the Forces Abroad: as imprest towards the charges of the Forces, either Foreign Troops or Subject Troops, which shall be under his care of pay for the year 1712 and for and towards the Queen's share of subsidies upon treaties with our Allies. Money warrant for 194l. 13s. 4d. to Michael Studholme, Keeper of her Majesty's Roads and Guide of her person in all her Progresses; 73l. thereof for two years to 1711 Xmas on his patent fee of 2s. a day and 121l. 13s. 4d. for same time on his allowance of 3s. 4d. a day for travelling charges. J. Taylour (in the absence of the Treasury Secretaries) to Mr. Brydges. The Colonels of several Regiments in Ireland have applied to my Lord Treasurer for payment of the sums due to them for men detached out of their Regiments to recruit the Forces in Spain, for which they have royal warrants for 4l. per man. The charge of the said recruits ought to be placed to the accounts of the Regiments who received them, of which there may be several that are now ordered to be broke. You are to lay before my Lord an account of all the warrants charged on you for recruits which remain unsatisfied, and to propose to my Lord how they may be best satisfied, especially with regard to Regiments already disbanded or under orders to be be disbanded. Aug. 19 J. Taylour (in the absence of the Treasury Secretaries) to Mr. Watkins. My Lord Treasurer has received a letter from Lord Strafford pressing for some things to be ordered for the Regiment of [Albertus Ernestus II] the Prince of Ottingen so that the pay thereof may cease. My Lord has directed Mr. Brydges to write to his deputy [in Flanders] by this night's post forth with to pay her Majesty's share of the charge of the said Battalion to the 23rd inst., but to let them know at the same time that they are to expect no more from her Majesty. Ibid.
Same to Mr. Borret to advise with the Attorney General about the enclosed affidavits [missing] concerning Dr. Chase of Hockfield [£ Oakfield], Co. Southampton, in relation to the killing of her Majesty's venison in Windsor [sic £ New] Forest. Chase is to be effectually prosecuted. Ibid.
Same to the [Principal] Officers of the Works. Divers of the rolls and records in Chancery are now to be transmitted from thence to the Tower of London. The Lord Treasurer directs you to attend the Master of the Rolls to know what room will be necessary to be fitted up for their reception. Ibid., p. 253.
Same to the Secretary at War. Thomas Morphew, Marshal to the First and Second Regiments of Foot Guards, has exhibited his bill of disbursements for repairing and fitting up the prison in the Savoy and also for necessaries for the recruits et al. secured there in 1707–9. My Lord Treasurer has ordered the charge for said repairs to be taken into the debt of the Office of Works, the same being an edifice belonging to her Majesty. The Paymaster General of Guards and Garrisons proposes meeting the charge of said necessaries out of Contingencies, being 185l. 5s. 6d. Please obtain a royal warrant for same accordingly. Aug. 20 Money warrant for 80l. to Andrew Card for delivering into the Office of Queen's Remembrancer of the Exchequer, pursuant to a decree of that Court, all writings belonging to the Queen Dowager as were in the custody of Martin Folks, Attorney General to the said Queen, and for his pains in reducing the said writings into an alphabetical order, and making two schedules thereof. Same for 28l. 11s. 8d. to Hugh Reason for the surplusage on his account as Sheriff of Co. Sussex for the year ended 1711 Sept. 29; same arising by payments for apprehending Mary Fryer and Geo. Booker for felony and burglary. Money Book XXII, p. 51.
Aug. 20 Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to the Principal Officers of the Works to enter the sum of 558l. 19s. 3¾d. on the books of their Office for payment to Thomas Morphew, Marshal to the First and Second Regiments of Foot Guards, in like manner as shall be directed for the debt of said Office of Works for the quarter next in course of payment to those already directed.
Prefixing: report by Sir Christopher Wren et al., Officers of the Works, on the said Morphew's disbursements, detailed, in repairing and keeping in order her Majesty's Marshalsea in the Savoy in 1707, 1708 and 1709. The first two items were for the benefit of the edifice and reasonable to be made in case the prison had not been there. The account reported on by the Officers of the Works is as follows:

Aug. 20 J. Taylour (in the absence of the Treasury Secretaries) to the Customs Commissioners to report on the enclosed petition [missing] of Henry Erthman et al. for discharge of their ships [not named] from quarantine without airing their goods.
The like of the petition [missing] of Richard Tomlinson, merchant, et al., and of the petition of William Mowld, merchant, for similar discharge of their ships [not named]. Out Letters (General) XX, p. 253.
Same to same to report on the enclosed petition [missing] of Adam Bagshaw, junr., complaining against Harry Roynon, Examiner of the sufficiency of Customs officers' securities. Ibid.
Same to the Commissioners of Chelsea Hospital. In the last Session the House of Commons came to a resolution to grant 60,000l. for the support of said Hospital and the Invalid outpensioners belonging thereto over and above the poundage deduction and day's pay applicable to that use and also to defray the clothing and pay of the Invalid Companies. My Lord Treasurer is very apprehensive that unless some speedy reform be made in the numbers and pay of the said Invalids and outpensioners the charge will greatly exceed what the Parliament intended for them. He earnestly recommends you to consider what measures to take so as to bring the expense within the grant and to report to him thereon. He thinks the charge might in some measure be eased in case all furloes were called in. Ibid., p. 254.
Same to the Attorney General. It is the Queen's pleasure that William Glanville be inserted in the commission now passing for the present [year's] Lottery immediately after the name of John Edmonds and that Mr. Dash wood, whose Christian name is unknown, be left out. Ibid.
Same to Mr. Brydges. The Duke of Ormonde had under consideration how to ease the public expense in respect of bread waggons and artillery horses, and in his letter to Secretary Dartmouth dated Ghent Aug. 21 inst. [new style] says he will endeavour to make 25 waggons suffice for the future; and that in case the Artillery be brought into town those horses may also be discharged at the end of this month; but in order to this, his Grace desires that money may be ready to pay whatever shall be discharged. Please take care that money be ready to pay what shall appear due to the Contractors for such waggons and horses at such discharge.
On reading your memorial relating to the Battalion of Ottingen, my Lord agrees to the payment of her Majesty's share of the charge thereof to the 23rd inst., but the Commanders thereof to understand that the Queen will be at no further charge.
When you next lay before my Lord any particulars which you propose to be paid in South Sea Stock, please insert 160l. to satisfy Lieut. Gen. Webb for drummers' clothing and colours for her Majesty's Own Regiment of Foot for two years from 24 March 1710 [1709–10]: as also 497l. 5s. 0d. for offreckonings to Brigadier Dubourgay's Regiment, "the same being to satisfy the like sum which according to your report of May 27 last appears to be due to the late Col. William Goring for clothing by him purchased in Spain for three Companies of the said Regiment when it was under his command there." Out Letters (General) XX, pp. 254–5.
Aug. 20 J. Taylour (in the absence of the Treasury Secretaries) to the Secretary at War enclosing for his consideration Mr. Brydges' memorial representing the case of the reduced Officers with respect to their being entitled "only" to half pay from March 25 last though their Regiments were not actually disbanded till the 7th inst.
Please (with Mr. Southwell) draft a warrant for charging the revenues in Ireland with the pay of such Regiments prisoners in Spain as are to be transferred to the Establishment of Ireland according to their pay [to wit] by the Establishment here from 1711 Dec. 23 to 1712 Aug. 23 inst. and according to the pay on the Irish Establishment from and after that time.
"The enclosed [missing] are memorials laid before my Lord by Mr. Brydges for money to answer the subsistence of the commissioned and non-commissioned Officers and private men of the said Regiments now in Britain according to such lists as have been returned him [Brydges] from the Muster Master General's Office." Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to the Customs Commissioners to observe an order in Council of the 18th August for the release from quarantine of the ships Martha, John Nothover master; Loyal Merchant, Thomas Fazley master; Mary, Daniel Season master; Dolphin, George Nickleson master; William and Mary, Thomas Aram master; all from Gothenburg with masts, timber and deals and on the petition of Sir William Phippard. Commission by same to James Coulton, gent., to be a Surveyor of the Duties on Houses loco Nicho. Jefferey, dismissed. (Dormant warrant by same to the Receiver General of Taxes for Co. Royal warrant dated Windsor to the Duke of Ormonde, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, to place the Earl of Hyndford's Regiment of Dragoons on the Establishment of Ireland as in lieu of the Earl of Strafford's Regiment of Dragoons, which the Queen has thought fit to be raised on the Establishment of Great Britain instead of that in Ireland: to wit as from Aug. 24 inst.
