Royal warrant for a privy seal to appoint Sir Robert Atkins Receiver General of the Impositions upon law proceedings granted by the late Act of Parliament with the fee of 6d. in the £ on all his receipts; and because it cannot at present be well ascertained what will be required for rent of a house or place for keeping the said office of Receiver General of this revenue and what for salaries of clerks and incidents, therefore the Treasury Lords are to issue their warrants quarterly for such sums as they shall think fit for such purposes. May 2 Treasury order for 3,000l. to Sir John Nicholas in repayment of loan. Order Book XXXVII p. 118.

Same to Lord Ashley, enclosing a warrant for 41,961l. for the Navy on the first quarter of the Subsidy which is the sum set down for them [the Navy] in the project on that quarter for this year's expense which his Majesty has commanded to be forthwith despatched. Also Sir Robert Long, finding no clear provisions to be made in the bill for an Imposition on Law Proceedings for the collecting of several of those impositions, I have drawn the enclosed warrant with Sir R. Long's assistance. It is signed by His Majesty and the Treasurer of the Household and requires another hand to countersign it. I also enclose a warrant for taking Mr. Lewen's security. In view of the need of haste and seeing he told me you commanded him to follow you as to-day I have delivered him his commissions as both Receiver and Solicitor before the passing of his security. There are some other warrants of smaller concern which you may sign as you think fit. Let me have these papers back by the first post. Both the King and the Duke were this afternoon at the Treasury Chambers about more money for the Navy, and the Navy Commissioners are ordered to bring a particular of what moneys they would have for this year's expense: the consequence whereof your Lordship will easily conjecture. Same to Sir R. Long. At the command of the Treasurer of the Household you are to admit of Sir Ste. Fox's 14,000l. on the Subsidy, but so as that it be after what is charged in the project for this year's expense and not otherwise. Ibid.
May 3 Treasury warrant to the Customs Farmers to pay 100l. to the Mayor, &;c., of Berwick, for repair of the bridge over the Tweed. Warrants EarlyXXXVIII. p. 115.

May 4 Sir G. Downing to Sir W. Doily, Mr. Sherwyn, Col. Webb, Mr. Lawrence, Mr. Payne, Mr. Hall to take the securities of John Lindsey as Receiver of the subsidy in co. Essex in place of Sergeant Barcroft, who resigns same in his favour. Ascertain from the sureties whether they wish to give bond in London or the country, and if the latter to whom as Commissioners: for otherwise "I am to seek in the drawing of the warrants to the Lord Fanshawe [the King's Remembrancer] for the taking security." Same to the Grand Commissioners of Excise. It is His Majesty's pleasure that the farm of Excise of Gloucester being void by the death of Mr. Chamberlaine, you are not to make a lease thereof until you receive His Majesty's nomination of a lessee. Also it is His Majesty's pleasure that the farm rent of Yorkshire be made 800l. per an. less than now it stands in the list. Also you are to proceed in perfecting the lease of Excise of Cornwall to Mr. Heron. "I pray let me see you to-morrow by seven o'clock in the morning about the business of making the division of the rent of the present and new Excise according to what you had in command from the Lords of the Treasury when you were last at the Treasury Chambers." Ibid.
Same to same for their report on the draft Treasury letter intended to be sent to the Mayor and Aldermen of Chester concerning their neglect of the administration of the laws of Excise of beer and ale. Ibid, p. 459.
May 5 Treasury order for 100l. to Mary Williams in repayment of loan. Order Book XXXVII. p. 477.
Money warrant for 450l. to Sir Edward Dering. Sir Thomas Strickland and Robert Milward for Lady Day quarter as Commissioners for the Privy Seal. (Treasury order hereon, dated May 11.) Warrants Early XXVIII. p. 112; Order Book XXXVII. p. 118.
Treasury warrant to the Attorney General to prepare a bill for a grant to pass the Great Seal of the yearly pension of 850l. to James Hamilton, one of the Grooms of the Bedchamber, out of the Tenths of Oxford, Worcester, Hereford and St. Davids from Michaelmas next and for the yearly pension of 500l. to Elizabeth his wife in case she survive him, the first payment of the latter pension to be made at the first quarterly feast next to her husband's death. These pensions to be understood, taken and accepted by said James Hamilton to be in full satisfaction for all such interest in and advantages and profits of Hyde Park as were granted by His Majesty to said Hamilton for his life by letters patent of 1660, Nov. 24. Sir G. Downing to Sir R. Long concerning Sir Ste. Fox's loan of 14,000l. The Treasurer of the Household thinks it expedient for His Majesty's service that the loan may be charged as soon as Sir Ste. Fox pleases on the first quarter of the Subsidies. Out Letters General II. p. 459.

Privy seal for 100,000l. to William Ashburham, Cofferer of the Household, for the expense of the Household for one year from 1671, Oct. 1, and 10,000l. for allowance of interest he having often occasion, for the timely and necessary supply of the expenses of said Household, to take up money at interest until the money assigned for that service shall become payable. May 9 Privy seal for 730l. to Sir Edw. Wise being heretofore bound with Sir Hugh Pollard in the sum of 600l. which was laid out in His Majesty's service and which he has been forced to pay with damages: same to be paid out of the 730l. payable into the Exchequer by Samuell Gardner for buying an improved rent and adding a further term in the park and manor of Bewdley, co. Same for 515l. to Sir Peter Wiche, Envoy Extraordinary to the Emperor of Russia and afterwards same to the King of Poland: as an additional allowance of 20s. a day (over and above the 3l. a day ordinary allowed him) from 1668–9, Feb. 4, which was the day of his taking leave of the King, to 1670, July 3, which was the day of his return into the royal presence, same being in regard of his extraordinary charges in that service.
