said Bell not being the importer, but having bought

of which premises was afterwards, by patent of
1634, Nov. 27, granted to Sir Francis Crane, Kt.,
and Richard Crane and their heirs and assigns

243l. 8s. 2d., payable to the Crown for ever :
which said premises were afterwards, by virtue of a
writ of extendi facias out of the Exchequer seized
into the King's hands for non-payment of said
rent. Full power to be given to said Chiffinch
to recover said rent by virtue of the same

Feb. 28) for 99 years current with and from the date
of the King's grant thereof to the Queen Consort
as part of her jointure ; he paying (from the death
of said Queen Consort) the same yearly rents

king having previously by privy seal authorised
William, Lord Holles and others the Trustees of the
said Queen Consort to pass a reversionary grant

Privy seal to Treasurer Danby, etc., to discharge
Richard Browne and George Gaunt and their estates
of the sum of 120l., they being in 1666 and 1667
sub-farmers under Sir Samuel Starling, John Man
and others then Farmers of Excise for Norfolk
and Norwich, and the said sum having, without
precedent, been assessed upon them for the profits
of their office [sub-farm] towards the 1666 poll :
it appearing that by reason of a lamentable contagion
which in the said years, or one of them, happened
in the said city the said sub-farmers and their
agents were losers by their farm to the value of
500l. or thereabouts, but that they answered their
rent to the Chief Farmers without abatement or
defalcation : the Excise Commissioners conceiving
"that taxing the said sub-farmers as aforesaid
and returning the same into the Exchequer, was
the first and only precedent of that nature and
that the petitioners' case is very equitable."

on the 14th of the same May, Treasurer Danby
did by warrant (in regard of the necessity there
then was for the paying of such soldiers of the said
regiment as were discharged) direct the issue of
4,500l. out of the Receipt for said purpose being
moneys of the said Eighteen Months' Assessment,
the Teller taking into his custody for his security
tallies to that value as part of said 10,000l., until
same should be reimbursed ; yet the Farmers of
the said Four and a Half per cent. duty have not
yet paid in the said money, and the said Teller
stands still charged with said 4,500l. (Treasurer

in the Exchequer. Several convictions of Recusants
are estreated into the Exchequer from several
counties of England and Wales and delivered
over into your office by schedule of Pipe for
Recusants. You are hereby to cause several
writs to be issued to the sheriffs of each county
to seize into the king's hands two third parts of all
the lands, tenements, hereditaments, leases and
farms of Recusants in the said schedules of Pipe
respectively named, and to reduce into severalty
the said two third parts from the other third part
thereof (leaving to every Recusant his chief mansion
house as part of his third part) : the King having
declared his pleasure to refuse the 20l. per month
forfeited by every such Recusant for not coming
to church and to accept such two [third] parts
of such lands, etc., in lieu and full recompense
thereof according to the statute of 3 James in
that behalf. Said writs are to be returnable on
the morrow of St. Martin next : "wherein you
are to insert a clause expressing His Majesty's
command that such two parts of Rescusants'

I have had Mr. Coster before me for conveying
18 tons of timber out of Dean Forest. He says he
bought from the Surveyor of Woods 40 tons of
timber there for the use of the ironworks and Creed,
a keeper, was to deliver same, and he supposed this
18 tons was part thereof. But in truth 56 tons were
delivered. As I cannot, at this distance, discover
the truth of it, pray examine this matter and punish
the offenders, or report to me.

Instructions from Treasurer Danby to the Customs
Commissioners in reply to their representation
of the 12th inst. (1) Mr. Atkins, one of the sureties
of George Pley, junr., collector of Lyme, has payed
1,200l. towards satisfaction of Pley's debt to the
King, and Pley offers to pay in presently 300l.
more, and to deposit a bond of Mr. Bullen Reimes
for 500l. due to him. Certify me your opinion
hereof. (2) I approve of your letter to Mr. Kirkby,
riding surveyor for the North West Coasts, to
be resident upon his station, with his salary and
6s. 8d. a day when travelling, as allowed in the
case of Mr. Clement. (3) For saving charge to the
King, James Vernon, collector of Liverpool and
customer for Chester (of which port Liverpool is
a member), is from Midsummer next to execute
the place of collector of Liverpool for his salary
as customer of Chester and his [Liverpool] fee
of 40l. from that date is to cease, and [in lieu thereof]
he is to have only 10l. per an. for a clerk, as in
the case of Mr. Breton at Dover. (4) You have
agreed with Sir John Shaw and the patent landwaiters
[of London port] that said landwaiters
shall do their duty and be put upon ships from
the 24th of this month in like manner as the deputed
landwaiters are, which will lessen the King's charge
by so many 80l. per an., as the places of the
commission landwaiters fall void, by death or
otherwise. I approve hereof. (5) You have
placed a tidesman at Cowes loco William Dawtree,
disabled by age. You are to give Dawtree
10l. as a reward for his 13 years' honest behaviour.
(6). You are to retrench the Queenborough smack
(216l. per an. establishment) as follows, viz., instead
thereof buy a boat for 6l. to be stationed at
Rochester to guard the Medway from Rochester
to Queenborough, with an allowance of 10l. for
victualling ; for this service Mr. Yardly to be added
to the boatmen established at Rochester, with
20l. per an. salary ; a small boat or yawl of about
4l. price to be bought for the service of Faversham
port, and 20l. per an. established for a boatman
or tidesman for her, there being none established
for that port ; a yawl or boat of about 5l. price
to be bought for the service of Queenborough
and Richard Solomon, the present master of the
Queenborough smack is to be commander, and
be established as also waiter and searcher there
with 40l. per an. ; one more man to be added
to the Gravesend smack, which for victuals and
wages will come to 26l. per an. ; 20l. more to be
added to the 20l. per an. salary to the waiter and
searcher at Margate, same to be for a horse and
for taking care of the Isle of Thanet ; 15l. to be
added to the 10l. per an. salary of the waiter at
Ramsgate, to be for an able officer for the better
guarding that port ; 10l. per an. to be added to
the 20l. per an. salary of the waiter and searcher
at Leigh ; John Smith the present waiter and searcher
at Margate, and Robert Baker the waiter at
Margate and searcher at Leigh are to be written
to as to their unfitness before the above additions
relating to them be placed on the establishment.
(7) You are to pay Richard Hughs, deputy
collector and customer at Aberdovey 5l. as an
encouragement to him in the case of the seizure
of Henry Romsy's lead there, same having been
fraudulently shipped without payment of custom
or leave given, as was pretended.

the customs on defective wines belonging to George
Pott, merchant, who on 1672, May 15, bought of the
Commissioners for Prizes 20 small pipes of decayed
Malaga wines "out of the ship St. Peter at 4l. 5s. 0d.
per pipe or thereabouts [? and 14 pipes of Canary
wine] out of the St. Peter of Fredrichstadt at the
rate of 2l. 5s. 0d. per pipe or thereabouts" ; it
appearing that the said 20 pipes were but 3 of
full gauged pipes or butts (the pipes containing
not above 100 gallons each butt, whereas other
butts contain 126 gallons), and that John Digby who
bought a parcel of said wines out of the St. Peter
had an allowance of half custom : the said Pott's
wines having been removed from the King's
warehouse "upon a jealousy that the warehouse
would fall" which upon examination proved not
groundless.
