Charles Bertie to the Customs Cashier. Treasurer
Danby has resolved to make the following provisions
for the Ordnance Office, viz., 20,000l. out of the
Customs of East India ships imported in the next
ships which shall arrive after the saltpetre is paid
for ; 20,000l. by wine bonds to be taken for the next
vintage or by money [in cases] where the merchant
shall pay by way of discount upon such bonds :
but this last 20,000l. is to be received by 5,000l.
at a time alternis vicibus, to wit, the Treasurer of
the Ordnance is to receive the first 5,000l., the
third, fifth and seventh : and 10,000l. more is
to be paid out of the Customs in Aug., 1677. This
will complete 50,000l. for which tallies are already
struck in the name of said Treasurer, viz., 40,000l.
dated July 19 last, and 10,000l. dated this day.
You are to take notice hereof and regulate other
payments with respect hereto.

Warrant from Treasurer Danby to Thomas Whitley,
Receiver General of Crown Revenues, co. Chester,
and to the Auditor thereof. The mayor and
inhabitants of Macclesfield have lately petitioned
me for continuance of payment of the pension of
50l. per an. for the preacher there, which has been
duly paid till the sale of fee farms in said county,
since which no payment thereof has been made
by reason that the revenue remaining unsold is not
sufficient to satisfy the perpetual pensions to vicars
and such like in the said county, together with
this pension and the fee of the Chief Justice of
Chester and other officers of the Exchequer and castle
there. It now appears by the certificate of the
deputy Auditor of that county that the yearly
fee of 100l. to the Chief Justice of Chester is lately
settled to be paid out of the revenues of North
Wales : therefore the abovesaid pension may
now be continued out of the revenues of co. Chester.
You are hereby authorised to make and allow
such payment for the half year ended at Lady Day
last and to continue same for the future.

of the late Council for Trade and Plantations
constituted by letters patent of 1672, Sept. 27,
viz., Gawyn Wilson 100l. for one year, John Richards

for the remainder of one year, as respectively
messenger and doorkeeper to same, to complete
their salaries to the dissolution of said Council,
as appears duly certified upon a report on the order
of reference dated 1674-5, Feb. 10 from the Privy
Council made on their petition for such arrears.
The present warrant is to be charged on the
dormant patent of 1660, Sept. 28, by reason that the
money warrant of 1673-4, Feb. 13, for 650l. to
John Lock, Treasurer of the said Council, cannot be
presently paid because of the absence of said John
Lock, who, as Treasurer Danby is informed, is
beyond the seas. Without further direction no
further, payment is to be made on said order of

seal for a quieti sunt to be made and granted to
Sir Thomas Alleyn Kt. and Bart., John Ireton,
Richard Bury, William Puckle and Nathaniel
Manton or the survivors of them as late Commissioners
of Excise on their account 1659,
Mar. 26, to Sept. 30, of that duty, being the
last account by them delivered for that service
(they being from that term removed from that
employment), on which account they owe nothing
to the King, but are even and quit, as appears
by the certificate of June 22 last from John Brewer,
deputy Auditor of Excise : "but in regard the
several tallies (in number 144) mentioned and
allowed upon the declaration of the accompts of
the said late Commissioners from the 25th of Mar.,
1658, exclusive, to the 30 of Sept., 1659, inclusive,
cannot be found or produced, the said late
Commissioners are obstructed in obtaining their
quietus thereupon" : said tallies having been
formerly produced at the respective times of
examination and auditing of said account and
were remaining in the Grand Office of Excise in
Bartholomew Lane at the time of the sad and
lamentable fire when said office was burnt and
were either then burnt or lost in the removal of the
books, papers and other things belonging to that

Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Farmers of
the Customs [Four and a Half per cent. duty] of
Barbados and to Mr. Daniell Arthur, merchant,
appointing said Arthur to inspect the said Farmers'
accounts as well in the sale of goods as below as for
the charges thereof, and to see that the nett proceed
thereof be disposed according to Treasurer Danby's
orders : said Danby having about the beginning of
July last agreed that said Farmers shall be accomptants
for the present year 1676, and that as goods
[sent to England to said Farmers in liquidation of
said duty] arrived from Barbados they should be sold,
a just account thereof being kept and the net
proceed thereof paid as the Lord Treasurer should
direct : said Farmers having prayed the appointment
of some person to so inspect as above "to
take off all suspicion that the goods be not disposed
of under the value nor the charges unjust or
extravagant."

Privy seal for sums not exceeding 10,000l. in all to
Isaac Le Gouche, Esq., the King's Jeweller, for
the price of such jewels (with 6 per cent. interest)
as he shall from time to time furnish for the king's
service. And whereas two orders (for 1,000l. and
1,030l. respectively to him for such jewels) have been
lately drawn on the privy seal of 1673, Sept. 16, which
said privy seal will not bear said orders, said orders
are hereby to remain good and to be charged on said
privy seal for as much as it will bear, and upon the
present privy seal for any remainder : the said
Legouche having been at some charges in levying
tallies on said former privy seal. (Royal warrant
