Reference by same to the Commissioners of Excise and Hearthmoney of the petition of William Kitchenham, shewing that he was collector of Excise in Cornwall, Leicester and Cumberland for several years till he was laid aside with several others when the Excise Commissioners reduced the management: that he detected several concealments at Tunbridge Wells and in other parts of Kent and was thereupon appointed collector in the North Riding of Yorks: therefore prays to be made collector in Kent, he being thoroughly acquainted with all parts and persons thereof. Same by same to the Warden of the Mint and the Mint Commissioners of the petition of Henry Slingesby: petitioner shewing that by the annexed accompt [missing] which is an estimate of moneys due to him from the time of his suspension to the time of his surrender and by the reports from the Mint Commissioners and the Auditors [of Imprests] it appears that at 1684, Mar. 23, "there remained due to your petitioner his Majesty's debt of 4,958l. 7s. 3¼d. in arrear and the 8,632l. paid to the importers [of bullion to the Mint] 1,402l. 3s. 6¾d. besides the 224l. 4s. 0d. levied on the sale of his goods and paid into the Exchequer not then allowed him and besides the moneys imprested to the Warden by his Majesty's orders for repairs of the Mint of 2,157l. 0s. 8d. so certified which made in all due unto him 3,783l. 8s. 2¾d. since which time unto the 20th of May, 1686, the said Commissioners have not been called upon to deliver your Lordship their subsequent accompts of the salaries, allowances and profits by the petitioner's [Mint] indenture and for the two third parts of the salary and allowance devised to him by Blondeau's and Colborn's wills what they have amounted unto within the said time; which he humbly conceives they may do in less than half a day's time when directed by your Lordship: and but that your petitioner not knowing what the waste in making the assaies of the moneys nor the moiety of the officers' diet does amount unto which are appointed unto him to allow, your petitioner could not make his estimate so exact as otherwise he might have done, which they may quickly extract out of their books: the rest of their accounts will be soon made up, for the said Commissioners having recorded in the King's books [in the Mint] the totals of the weight of gold and silver moneys (a just extract of which your petitioner has from time to time taken) and there being as by their said former accounts reported and allowed unto your petitioner 2s. 6d. out of his 7s. for coinage of every pound weight of gold and 5½d. out of his 18d. for every pound weight of silver, his pension of 500l. and other salaries known by them the whole accompt of the moneys due unto him may in a very short time be made up and completed: therefore prays an order to said Comsioners to continue their said accounts from 1684, Mar. 25, to 1686, May 20, which may give the Lord Treasurer satisfaction concerning petitioner's claims and may induce his Lordship to imprest to petitioner such sums as may supply his present urgent occasions, being unhappily engaged in a trial at Cambridge this next assizes and other encumbrances. June 16. Reference by Treasurer Rochester to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Tho. Evans, master of the ketch Susanna of London, shewing that said ship arriving in London after a stormy voyage was seized by Capt. Charles Lock for not being manned according to the Act of Navigation, although caused by absolute necessity; petitioner and his family having nothing besides said ship for a livelihood. Entry of the signature by same and Sir John Ernle, Chancellor of the Exchequer, of the docquet of an in custodiam lease under the Exchequer seal to Katherine Carey, spinster, of the manor, messuages and lands of William Coleman, outlaw, in co. Suffolk: at a rent of 2s. 4d. per an. and fine of 4s. 8d. Warrants not Relating to Money XI, p. 302.
Report by Treasurer Rochester to the King on the petition of Michaell Haddon, petitioner setting forth that he is undertenant of the meadow ground called the Goswells, near Windsor, wherein 18 Companies of the King's soldiers under the Earl of Dumbarton and Sir Charles Littleton did exercise all last summer and wherein likewise 13 Companies of Foot Guards were encamped; whereby he lost the whole profit of said meadows, amounting to 60l. per an. and yet is forced to pay rent and taxes for same I am certified May 31 last by Mr. Blathwaite that 50l. may be a full compensation for the damages sustained that year by the Companies of the Royal Regiment and Prince's Regiment exercising there and the Foot Guards encamping there. Warrant by Treasurer Rochester to Francis Dickens, Woodward of New Forest, to apply moneys in hand raised out of browsewood cut the last two Springs in said forest towards the 600l. due to the keepers of said forest for two years' wages to Lady day last and to sell windfalls in said forest (except those fit for the Navy) and to apply the proceeds thereof towards said wages according to the directions of the Lord Warden of said forest: an account of said sales to be rendered before the Auditor for co. Done, Auditors of Imprests, to allow in account to John Knight such sums as he and his father John Knight, deceased, have paid for goods, wares or provisions bought and provided or for work done for the Great Wardrobe in the year ended 1685, Sept. 29, upon bills signed by Marmaduke Darcy, George Benyon and Robert Phelips (all as by the privy seals of 1684, Oct. 30 [31] and Dec. 23 supra, Calendar of Treasury Books, Vol. VII, pp. 1368–9, 1446, and the privy seal of 1684–5, Mar. 4, ut supra, ibid, Vol. VIII, pp. 20–1); and also such fees and allowances as have been heretofore allowed to the Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer and the Auditors of Imprests for declaring the accounts of the Master of the Great Wardrobe: all by reason that some of the said goods, work etc. have been bought and provided and paid for either upon directions given by the Lord Treasurer or the late Treasury Lords, signified by Henry Guy, "which method of proceeding being not exactly agreeable to the letter of the privy seals before recited some doubt has arisen whether the Auditor" is sufficiently authorised to allow said payments; and the Lord Treasurer being very well satisfied that none of said goods etc. were provided etc. and work done etc. without the privity of himself or of the late Treasury Lords. June 17. Reference by Treasurer Rochester to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of John Tyndale for admittance to the office of searcher, Bristol port, granted him by the late King in reversion of Sackville Graves and Oliver Williams, who are now both dead. Reference Book III, p. 338.
Same by same to same of the petition of Tho. Unday for a noontender's place in the Custom House [London port]. If qualified he is to be presented. Ibid, p. 339.
Same by same to Charles Toll, Charles Twitty, William Lowndes, Thomas Townsend and Humphry Dove of the petition of Thady Kennedy, one of the Grooms of the Great Chamber in Ordinary to the Queen Dowager; petitioner shewing that 291l. 2s. 0d. (292l. 2s. 0d.) is due to him for attendance but that he is informed an order has been made that none of the Queen Dowager's servants should receive any arrears due on their salaries except such as were actually in service at the time of the late King's death, "which the petitioner hopes will not extend to him in regard he was obliged to absent himself upon account of the [Popish] Plot." Same by same to the Customs Commissioners of the memoire [missing] of the Dutch Ambassador concerning the vessel Junie Marie which was seized and praying for same to be discharged without cost: said petition being referred from the King. Ibid.

Same by same to same of the petition of Antho. Jackson for the place of surveyor at Selby in Hull port loco Nathaniell Spencer, removed: petitioner being left in a very low condition by the sufferings of his predecessors in the rebellion. Ibid.
Same by same to the Auditor for South Wales of the petition of Jeronima Progers, daughter of William Bawd of Walgrave, co. Northampton, praying a grant of the arrears due to the King from Bevis Lloyd, Receiver General of Crown Revenues in South Wales; petitioner's father having been a great sufferer in the usurpation and lost an estate of 700l. per an. Grandison and Edward Villiers, shewing that Charles I granted to Lady Villiers 2d. per [lb.] tale on every pound Troy of silver coined in the Mint; that Charles II granted same to Lady Villiers for 21 years; that upon alteration in the Mint in 18 Car. II it was provided in the Coinage Act [18 and 19 Car. II, c. 5] that she should have 600l. per an. out of the [Coinage Duty] moneys leviable by that Act; and that by privy seal Charles II ordered payment of said 600l. per an. to her for the remainder of said term: therefore pray a privy seal for payment of the arrears and of said 600l. per an. for the remainder of [said] term. Treasurer Rochester to the Earl of Bath, Lord Warden of the Stannaries, "to be left at Bideford." On further discourse with the Attorney General concerning the cause between the King and James Kemp I think fit to lay the matter before the King in Council. I therefore desire you to forbear doing what I desired in mine of the 3rd inst. supra, p. 764. Please forbear calling a Convocation of Tinners until you hear further from me. Ibid, p. 375.

Warrant by Treasurer Rochester to the Customs Commissioners to observe an order of the King in Council dated Hampton Court, May 28 ult. Out Letters (Customs) X, p. 140.
Prefixing: said order made upon the report ut supra, p. 739, from the Lord Treasurer [on Thomas Westerne's petition]. It is hereby ordered that only 7s. 6d. per ton be demanded for one year from date hereof for any iron ordnance or mortar pieces exported; any law, statute, custom, provision or proclamation to the contrary notwithstanding.
June 18. Constitution and appointment by Treasurer Rochester of Robert Aske, gent., to be bailiff and collector of the rents, fines, issues etc. of his Majesty's manor and lordship of Chilesmore alias Cheilemore alias Childesmore, in the county of Warwick and city of Coventry, parcel of the Duchy of Cornwall and of all lands, tenements, Courts Leet, Liberties, fines etc. thereto belonging: he answering his receipts to the Receiver General of said Duchy according to the form of the statute of 7 Edw. VI: to hold during the King's pleasure with the usual fee of 40s. per an. Warrants not Relating to Money XI, p. 305.
Reference by same to the Navy Commissioners of the petition of Anthony Stephens; petitioner shewing that being Cashier to the Treasurer of the Navy there happened to be an omission upon payment of a Navy bill of the defalting [deducting of] 100l. which had been before imprested, "or if the same were abated your petitioner cannot now receive satisfaction by reason of his knowledge of this thing but [only] very lately, and the decease of the person several years since who paid the said bill, and the said debt being to be made good to his Majesty, petitioner is like to be liable thereto": further that 400l. is in arrear to him for salary as an auditor of the revenue: therefore prays payment of same or some part thereof in order whereto he hopes to procure the payment of 200l. or 300l. into the Exchequer "wherewith your petitioner may be satisfied the said salary or part of it and [praying also that] the said debt to his Majesty be likewise discharged." June 19. Royal warrant [to the Attorney or Solicitor General] for a great seal to appoint Charles, Lord Cheyne, Sir Dudley North, Sir John Werden, Sir John Buckworth, William Dickinson, Thomas Chudleigh and Samuel Clark, esq., or any four of them to be Commissioners of the Customs and of the New impositions and of the Four and a Half per cent, duty in place of the said Cheyne, North, Werden, Sir Nicho. Butler, Sir John Buckworth, William Dickinson and Tho. Chudleigh, commissioned ut supra, p. 228. The present Commissioners to have 1,200l. per an. each as salary as from June 24 inst.: John Sanson to be their Secretary and John Lloyd their Agent and Solicitor with salaries as in the present commission and with the like proviso ut supra, ibid, for 300l. per an. to Robert Bertie, esq., out of said Sanson's salary. Henry Guy to the Attorney General to stop Mr. Stysted's proceedings against Mr. Scawen, the merchant, in his own name, and Mr. Lucas, a Customs officer, in the name of one Browne for importing 400 pieces of calico from Holland contrary to the Navigation Act. Out Letters (General) IX, p. 376.
