Footnotes

  • 1. He was perhaps the William archdcn. who held the vill of Heigham next Norwich, and was 'avunculus' of Henry and William de Neville (Reg. Holme 1 no. 193).
  • 2. The appearance of two archdcns. called William in a charter of [Oct. 1126 × Feb. 1127] is presum. a scribal error (ibid. no. 124).
  • 3. Temp. king Stephen and Everard of Calne, bp. of Norwich (above p. 55).
  • 4. Temp. William de Turba, prior of Norwich (above p. 59), and Everard of Calne, bp. (p. 55).
  • 5. Temp. Everard of Calne, bp. of Norwich (above p. 55).
  • 6. Temp. Walkelin archdcn. (of Suffolk) (above p. 67), and Everard of Calne, bp. of Norwich (p. 55).
  • 7. Bures St. Mary.
  • 8. For the date, see Saltman, Theobald pp. 166-7.
  • 9. He is probably to be identified with M. Reiner of Heacham (Norf.) (see Norfolk Portion of the Chartulary of Lewes, ed. J. H. Bullock (Norfolk Record Soc. xii) nos. 101, 201), who occ. 1183 (Mon. Ang. vi(2) 880-1).
  • 10. Temp. Thomas archdcn. of Norwich (above p. 63).
  • 11. Temp. Martin, prior of Thetford, and John of Oxford, bp. of Norwich (above p. 56). Landon, Archdcns. p. 14, thought that Reiner was archdcn. of Norfolk; this is impossible unless he res. from Norfolk, as he occ. without title together with John archdcn. (of Norfolk) (Norwich, ch. 860).
  • 12. M. H-archdcn. witnesses a deed of John bp. of Norwich, dated 1207/8, relating to the church of Mildenhall (archdcnry. of Sudbury) (cart. of Bury: P.R.O., D.L.42/5 fo. 16r).
