[William son of Humphrey (fn. 1)

Not appd. until after [1127 × 34], when still called bp.'s clk. (Reg. Holme 1 no. 129). (fn. 1) Occ. as archdcn. [1135 × 45] (First Reg. Norw. p. 62) (fn. 1) and [1136 × 45] (cart. of Stoke by Clare: B.M., Cotton MS. App. xxi fo. 41r), (fn. 1) and perhaps earlier [1121 × 45] (First Reg. Norw. p. 58). (fn. 1) Called William archdcn. of Suffolk on an occasion [1135 × 45], when occ. together with William I archdcn. (of Norwich) and Walkelin archdcn. (of Suffolk) (B.M., Campbell ch. xii. 2), (fn. 1) and this presum. means one of archdcns. in county of Suffolk (cf. Flor. Hist. 11 68). Presum. archdcn. of Sudbury because occ. together with William I, Roger and Walkelin, archdcns. respectively of Norwich, Norfolk and Suffolk (H.M.C., Lothian MSS. (1905) p. 40), and occ. as sole witness to deed concerned with a church (fn. 1) in archdeaconry of Sudbury (cart. of Stoke by Clare: B.M., Cotton MS. App. xxi fo. 41r).]

[Baldwin of Boulogne

First occ. as archdcn. 1143 (Materials for Becket 111 15). (fn. 1) Last occ. 1167 or 1168 (ibid. VI no. 328). Does not occ. with territorial title, but presum. succeeded William son of Humphrey, because occ. together with William II, Roger and Walkelin, archdcns. respectively of Norwich, Norfolk and Suffolk (Norwich, Reg. IV p. 28), who all occ. together with William son of Humphrey (H.M.C., Lothian MSS. (1905) p. 40); perhaps to be identified with 'Bad.' archdcn., who is sole archdcn. witnessing a charter relating to a church in archdcnry. of Sudbury (cart. of Walden: B.M., Harley MS. 3697 fo. 40r-v; cf. above p. 63 n. 2). Perhaps a royal clk. under king Stephen (see Regesta 111 p. xi).]

M. Reiner (fn. 1)

Occ. without title 1187/8, in entourage of John of Oxford, bp. of Norwich (Norwich, Reg. IV pp. 33-4). Occ. as archdcn. [1178 × 1200] (cart. of Stoke by Clare: B.M., Cotton MS. App. xxi fos. 43r, 46v). (fn. 1) Called archdcn. of Sudbury [c. 1185 × 1200] (Camb., King's Coll. Muniments B/9). (fn. 1)

Prob. still alive 1212 (Pipe Roll 14 John (Pipe Roll Soc., new ser. xxx) p. 180). Does not occ. with territorial title, but must be archdcn. of Sudbury because occ. during the period when Thomas, Geoffrey de Bocland and Geoffrey were archdcns. respectively of Norwich, Norfolk and Suffolk; and occ. together with Thomas archdcn. (of Norwich), John archdcn. (of Norfolk) and Geoffrey archdcn. (of Suffolk) (cart. of Stoke by Clare fo. 42v).] (fn. 1)

M. Robert of Gloucester

King's clk. (cf. Rot. Chart. p. 169). Occ. without title [1211 × 13] (Cartae Antiquae, 1 ed. L. Landon (Pipe Roll Soc., new ser. xvii) no. 251). Occ. as archdcn. of Stafford (Lichfield dioc.) from 4 June 1213 (Rot. Litt. Claus. 1 135) to 24 March 1216 (Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 171b). Occ. as archdcn. of Sudbury 9 Feb. 1220 (cart. of Bury: C.U.L., Add. MS. 4220 fos. 103v-104r). D. by 28 Oct. 1222 (Pat. R. 1216-25 p. 349; cf. Cart. Gloucestriae, ed. W. H. Hart (Rolls ser. xxxiii) 11 35).

M. Alan de Beccles (fn. 1)

Bp.'s official from 1220 to 1227 (C.R.R. viii 314, cf. p. 380; Norwich, Reg. IV p. 80). First occ. as archdcn. 12 Nov. 1224 (Norwich, Reg. III fo. 239r-v). One of the 'famosi Anglici' at university of Paris before dispersal of 1229 (Chron. Maj. 111 168). Last occ. as archdcn. 1 Apr. 1235 (Norwich, Reg. I fo. 230v, date incompletely pd. in First Reg. Norw. p. 124). Still alive, not called archdcn., 1239 (Chron. Maj. 111 528). Perhaps to be identified with unnamed archdcn. of Sudbury who occ. 22 Apr. 1239 and 24 Apr. 1240 (Reg. Greg. IX nos. 4816, 5142). D. by 25 March 1241 (C.P.R. 1232-47 p. 248).

M. Roger Pincerna alias Le Boteler

First occ. 8 Jan. 1241 (First Reg. Norw. p. 128). Last occ. 21 Apr. 1242 (cart. of Eye: Chelmsford, Essex R.O., D/D By.Q.19 fo. 28r-v). Transf. to archdcnry. of Suffolk by 27 May 1242 (above p. 68).

M. William de Clare (fn. 1)

Bp.'s official until 1241 (First Reg. Norw. p. 128). First occ. as archdcn. 27 May 1242 (Norwich, ch. 1718). Last occ. 10 May 1256 (C.P.R. 1247-58 p. 514). Still alive, not called archdcn., 2 Aug. 1258 (ibid. p. 644).

M. Thomas of Ingoldisthorpe (fn. 1)

Occ. twice only: 30 July 1266 (C.P.R. 1258-66 p. 621) and 3 Aug. 1267 (ibid. p. 96). Archdcn. of Middlesex (London dioc.), appd. by 17 Apr. 1268 (see Fasti 1066-1300 1 (1968) 17), but had been succeeded in archdcnry. of Sudbury by 18 Dec. 1267 (below). Later dean of London; bp. of Rochester (below p. 78).

M. Constantine de Mildenhall (fn. 1)

First occ. 18 Dec. 1267 (C.P.R. 1266-72 p. 174). Last occ. 11 Oct. 1273 (I. J. Churchill, Canterbury Administration (1933) 11 52). Also can. of Salisbury.

M. Ralph de Fornham (fn. 1)

Occ. three times only: 8 June, 13 June and 30 Oct. 1279 (Reg. J. Pecham 1 2, 4; 11 93). Also abp.'s clk. (ibid. 1 2). Still alive, not called archdcn., 11 Dec. 1279 (ibid. 1 103). An unnamed archdcn. of Sudbury occ. 14 July 1282 (Reg. J. Pecham 1 155) and 13 Sept. 1282 (ibid. 11 173).

M. Ralph of York

First occ. 29 Aug. 1285 (H.M.C., Various Collections 1 (1901) 344). Chanc. of Salisbury by 17 Sept. 1294 (C.P.R. 1292-1301 p. 87), still alive 17 Feb. 1299 (ibid. p. 395). An unnamed archdcn. of Sudbury occ. 6 Jan. 1300 (Norwich, Norf. and Norwich R.O, Reg. J. Salmon fo. 6r).

M. Henry de Bradenham (fn. 1)

First occ. 20 June 1307 (Reg. Clementis V, ed. O. S. B. (Rome, 1885-92) nos. 1701-2). Archdcnry. vacant by 1 Apr. 1308 (Norwich, Norf. and Norwich R.O., Reg. J. Salmon fo. 27r).
