Church of St. Martin in Dernestall, Lincoln, gr. to bp. by king William I 1072 (R.A.L. I nos. 2, 10); presum. preb. before 1135 (cf. ibid. nos. 106, 192, referring to temp. Henry I); conf. as preb. by pope 6 Feb. 1146 (ibid. no. 252 p. 198) and 5 June 1163 (ibid. no. 255 p. 205). Vicarage ordained 1318 (Reg. II fo. 71r-v). See also R.A.L. VIII nos. 2336-7.

Received this preb. from bp. Robert de Chesney, after 19 Dec. 1148, conf. by king Henry II after 19 Dec. 1154 (R.A.L. I no. 106). Chapl. of Henry II; nephew of Roger of Pont l'Évêque, abp. of York (1154-81); provost of Beverley; chanc. to young king Henry. First certain occ. as can. before 1159, prob. mid 1150s (ibid. II no. 310, see app. 15). Occ. as this preb. n.d. (R.A.L. VIII no. 2336). Drowned when crossing to Normandy, 27 Sept. 1177 (Gesta Hen. II I 195). Possibly related to dean Geoffrey (d. 1182) (R.A.L. IX 81; list 2).

Preb. still vacant for year Sept. 1185 - Sept. 1186, worth £7 7s. 5d. (P.R. 32 Hen. II (P.R.S. xxxvi) p. 83).

M. Richard of Cornwall

Coll. by bp. at request of Giles, cardinal-den. of SS. Cosmo and Damiano, before 11 Nov. [? 1237] (Epp. Grosseteste nos. 46-7). First occ. 1239 × 16 June 1242 (R.A.L. X no. 2872). Last occ. 31 Dec. 1248 (ibid. III no. 830), and 1245 × 16 June 1252 (ibid. X no. 2915). Presum. not to be identified with M. Richard of Cornwall, can. of York from 1218, chanc. of York 1225-33, who prob. d. by 1234 (see York Minster Fasti I 18-19). For the careers of both men, see Biog. Ox. I 490-1.

Godred of Lincoln

First occ. as can. 13 Nov. 1264 (Rot. Gravesend p. 91), but perhaps occ. earlier, as 'Goderic' can., 7 Apr. 1263 (see below p. 126). Occ. as this preb. 1275 (Rot. Hund. I 328b). Last occ. continuously from 18 Sept. 1278 to 7 Jan. 1279 (R.L. I), but not between 2 July and 17 Sept. 1279 (R.L. II). Codicil of his will dated 21 Sept. 1278 (R.A.L. X no. 2803). D. by 18 May 1280 (ibid. nos. 2804-5). Prob. to be identified with Godred who occ. 1239 × 45, and c. 1250 (ibid. IV no. 1409, X no. 2795), and with Godred, provost of the Common, who occ. 1262 × May 1265 (ibid. VIII no. 2327; cf. X 128).

M. Ralph of Ivinghoe (fn. 2)

First occ. as can. 9 Nov. 1281 (P.R.O., J.I.3/35B m. 39). Also preb. of York; chanc. of St. Paul's, London (Fasti 1066-1300 I 26-7). Last occ. 18 Oct. 1299 (London, St. Paul's D. & C. Libr., A/24/605). Res. this preb. 1 Aug. 1302 (Reg. II fo. 277r).
