PREBEND

Church of North Kelsey (Lincs., sokeland of royal manor in 1086) gr. 'in prebendam' by king Stephen 1139 × 40 (Regesta III no. 477, cf. no. 479); conf. as preb. by pope 6 Feb. 1146 (R.A.L. I no. 252 p. 199) and 5 June 1163 (ibid. no. 255 p. 205). Vicarage ordained 12 March 1277 (Rot. Gravesend pp. 74-5). Pres. by preb. 1287 (Reg. Sutton I 101).

Church of St. Benedict in Wigford, Lincoln, gr. by Roger Bigod and conf. to cathedral and bp. by king Henry I 1103 × 06 (Regesta II no. 781 = R.A.L. I no. 34). Presum. preb. before gr. of remaining Lincoln churches to precentor prob. second half of 1147 (list 3), but not mentioned as preb. until 1291 (Taxatio p. 56b).

Church of St. Cuthbert, Lincoln, first mentioned c. 1170 × c. 1180 (R.A.L. VIII no. 2267), but presum. in existence, and preb. before gr. of remaining Lincoln churches to precentor prob. second half of 1147 (list 3); not mentioned as preb. until 1291 (Taxatio p. 56b).

? Richard of Kelsey (fn. 1)

First occ. as can. ? c. 1180 (cart. St. Andrew, Northampton, fo. 37v, see app. 30), and ? late 1183 or early 1184 (Danelaw Chs. no. 291, see app. 31). Occ. in L.P. II, of c. 1187 (app. 33 no. 43). Last occ. c. 1200 (R.A.L. × no. 2763, see app. 47; cf. R.A.L. VIII no. 2339). His name suggests that he may have held this preb.

M. Amaury of Buckden

Bp.'s clk. Not yet can. 11 July 1222 (Rot. Welles II 197-8). (fn. 2) First occ. as can. 25 Nov. 1222 (ibid. p. 199). Archdcn. of Bedford from between 14 Oct. and 19 Dec. 1231; d. between 17 June 1245 and 16 June 1246 (list 13). Occ. as this preb. while archdcn. (R.A.L. II no. 473).

M. John Le Romeyn (the younger)

Chanc. from before 12 June 1275 (list 4). First occ. as this preb. 8 March 1277 (Rot. Gravesend pp. 74-5; cf. Reg. Hon. IV no. 279 = C.P.L. I 484). Transf. to preb. Nassington on becoming precentor, between 25 June and 29 Sept. 1278 (lists 53, 4, 3).

M. Simon de Baumburg

Chanc. by 18 Dec. 1281; last occ. 30 Oct. 1287; had been succeeded by 24 Apr. 1291 (list 4). Occ. as this preb. 30 Oct. 1287 (Reg. Sutton I 101).

M. John of Dalderby

Chanc. by 24 Apr. 1291 (list 4). This preb. until became bp. of Lincoln, el. 15 Jan. 1300, temps. 18 March, cons. 12 June (Reg. II fo. 275r; list 1).

M. Ralph Barry

Coll. by bp. to this preb. and chancellorship 5 Aug. 1300 (Reg. II fo. 275r; list 4). Last occ. in year Sept. 1315 - Sept. 1316 (Bj/2/4 fo. 116r). D. as this preb. by 4 Sept. 1316 (Reg. II fo. 293r).
