LIST 6 ARCHDEACONS WITHOUT TERRITORIAL TITLE

Since the first archdeacons of the diocese occur without territorial title, they cannot be assigned to particular archdeaconries and are listed below in chronological order. If there were four archdcnries. in bp. Roger's time (1107- 39), the archdcns. might have been:

1. Hubald (? Dorset)

2. Everard, succeeded by Nigel

3. Joel

4. Alexander

Everard became bp. of Norwich in 1121, where his pontificate (1121-45) was important in the establishment of territorial archdeaconries (1 Fasti II 61ff.; cf. EEA VI p. xxvi): Salisbury may well have been his model.

Vit. VI 150-2 and n.; Chron. Battle Abbey, ed. E. Searle (OMT, 1980) pp. 82, 116; see also Heads of Relig. Houses p. 74).

Everard of Calne preb. unident., list 65

First occ. 1078 x 99, temp. Hubald archdcn. (Will. Malmes., GP p. 429). Also occ. 1111 and 1115 (Regesta II nos. 981n., 1089). Calne is in archdcnry. of Wilts. Also king's chapl. and preb. of London (1 Fasti I 61). Bp. of Norwich, el. soon after 13 March 1121, cons. 12 June (ibid. II 55-6; EEA VI pp. xxxi-xxxiii). Possibly son or nephew of Nigel Medicus and brother of Nigel of Calne (see list 24).

Hubald (fn. 1) preb. Sherborne, list 52

First occ. 1078 x 99, in connection with Malmesbury, temp. Everard archdcn. (Will. Malmes., GP pp. 429-31). Described as having trained in the liberal arts (ibid.; cf. above, pp. xxiii-xxiv). Also occ. 1100 (Eadmer, HN p. 123). Preb. Sherborne is in Dorset. D. by c. 1122 (Sar. Chs. p. 16; cf. Heads of Relig. Houses p. 70 for Thurstan abbot of Sherborne).

Joel preb. unident., list 65

Occ. twice: 30 June 1121 (Two Chartularies of Bath, ed. W. Hunt (Somt. Rec. ser., 1893) p. 51) and 1122 or a little earlier (Kealey p. 238).

Alexander preb. unident., list 65

Occ. 1121 [after Aug.] (Regesta II no. 1301). Still archdcn. 'of Salisbury' when appd. bp. of Lincoln 1123 (John Worc. p. 17), nom. c. 15 Apr., cons. 22 July (1 Fasti III 1-2). As archdcn. said to have composed an Anglo-Norman glossary of Old English legal terms (St Paul's WD 1 fo. 61, pd. HMC 9th Report i p. 60). Nephew of bp. Roger le Poer (1107-39) (see Kealey pp. 24, 272, 274-5; 1 Fasti III 1-2).

Nigel preb. unident., list 65

Said to have been archdcn. in Salisbury dioc. when appd. bp. of Ely 1133 (Cartularium Monasterii de Rameseia, ed. W. H. Hart and P. A. Lyons (RS lxxix, 1884-93) I 23), nom. 28 May, cons. 1 Oct. (1 Fasti II 45). Nephew of bp. Roger le Poer (1107-39) (see Kealey pp. 24, 274-5; GFL p. 533; Gesta Stephani, ed. K. R. Potter and R. H. C. Davis (OMT, 1976) p. 72). Not to be confused with Nigel of Calne, preb. Calne (list 24).
