PREBEND

Manor of Charminster (Dorset) part of pre-Conquest episcopal estates of Sherborne (see AS Chs. Sherborne pp. xxxviii-xxxix, xliv, xlv; cf. DB I 75d); Bere (Dorset) king's manor (ibid. 75b); Bristoard the priest (cf. Bedwyn, list 17) held church of Bere 1086 (ibid. 79a). Charminster one of several 'villas preter militum terras' given to cans. by bp. Osmund 1091 (carta). Church of Bere also given (ibid.). Both conf. by pope 26 Nov. 1146 (PUE II no. 53 p. 209).

Preb. prob. in existence by c. 1150 (Psalter list), though not mentioned in conf. of Henry II 1158 (RSO I 203-6). Certainly preb. by 1197 x 1215, consisted of estates and tithes in Charminster and Bere (IV/E.5/Prebend of Charminster & Bere/2, 3 etc.; cf. Valor II 74). Agreement over tithes in 1240s (Sar. Chs. pp. 277-81).
