Archdeacons

[Walter of London

preb. unident., list 50

First occ., as Walter archdcn., c. 1121 × 1128, together with Geoffrey, Hugh and Osbert archdcns. (EEA V no. 43, a spurious charter carrying a prob. genuine witness-list; see Geoffrey, list 12). Occ. as Walter archdcn. several times in the late 1130s (EEA V nos. 44, of 1135 × July 1139; 61, of 1137 × Jan. 1140; 79 and 81, of July 1139 × Jan. 1140). Walter of London, prob. archdcn., occ. c. 1121 × 1135 (ibid. no. 57, possibly spurious, but preserving a genuine witness-list; and see Clay 'Archdeacons' p. 283), perhaps to be identified with M. Walter who occ. without title same period (EEA V no. 73). As Walter of London archdcn. he took a leading role in opposition to el. of William Fitz Herbert as abp., Jan. 1141 - 1143 (John of Hexham pp. 307, 311; PUE II no. 32; cf. HCY II 221-2). Prob. to be identified with the senior archdcn. (therefore York) who was mutilated by opponents of abp. Henry Murdac 1148 (William of Newburgh pp. 56-7), and possibly d. as a result (see Clay, 'Archdeacons' pp. 283, 286). Commem. at Durham 12 July (Liber Vitae Dunelm. p. 144).]

Occ. as archdcn. once temp. abp. William 1153 × 54 (ibid. no. 91). Occ. several times temp. abp. Roger, once without title (EYC V no. 173; cf. no. 175 = EEA XX no. 61). Unlikely to be identified with Geoffrey, provost of Beverley, who is called 'archidiaconus Eboracensis' by Diceto referring to 1176 (Diceto I 406; see Clay, 'Archdeacons' p. 411). (fn. 84)

VI 1181-2 = EEA XX no. 129; EYC I no. 280 = EEA XX no. 52; EYC III no. 1565 = EEA XX no. 127; EYC VIII no. 127). Called archdcn. of W.R. in notice of his d., on the return journey from Rome, before late Sept. 1194 (Houedene III 272-3). (fn. 86) Nephew of abp. Roger of Pont l'Evêque and rector of Skelton (N.R.) (Cart. Guisborough II no. 816 = EYC II no. 675 = EEA XX no. 42; cf. EYC I 20 and Cart. Guisborough II no. 838). Brother of Robert, provost of Beverley and preb. Sherburn (EYC V no. 330; list 25).
