Prebend

Strensall (N.R.): cath. held land in 1086 (Yorks. DB fos. 303v, 381). Haxby (N.R.): cath. held 6 car. 1 bov. in 1086 (ibid. fos. 303, 381).

Part of Strensall and Haxby (fn. 201) in preb. 1167 (Pipe Roll 13 Hen. II (PRS xi, 1889) p. 98).

Preb. included a toft in Clifton, York, by 1190 × 94 (YMF I no. 44). Agreement over tithes 1224 (Cart. Treas. York no. 38).

Preb. was rector of Strensall, with chapel in Osbaldwick and lands; mansion house in Minster Yard (YMLA L1/7 (Torre) fos. 466-471 v (1019-32)). Land in Goodramgate in 1366 (Chs. Vicars Choral nos. 208-10).

Preb. not included in Extents of c. 1295.

First occ. as can. 1135 × 43 (EYC II no. 1012) (fn. 203) and Jan. 1151 × 14 Oct. 1153 (EEA V nos. 114, 127, 132; cf. no. 121). Occ. several times. Occ. as this preb. before 1166 (EYC II no. 785) and at Michaelmas 1167 (Pipe Roll 13 Hen. II (PRS xi, 1889) p. 98). Last occ. c. 1180, writing to Ranulph de Glanville on the method of electing the last prior of Kirkham (Aug., N.R.) (EYC X no. 105; cf. I nos. 233, 328). Prob. the man mentioned by Geoffrey Gaimar (L'Estoire des Engleis by Geffrei Gaimar, ed. A. Bell (Anglo-Norman Text Soc., 1960) v. 6476 and note).

M. Laurence

Archdcn. of Bedford (Lincoln dioc.) by 1181 (1 Fasti III 42). Occ. at York, prob. can., 22 Nov. 1181 × July 1186 (EYC I no. 319). Certainly can. by 1186, when occ. as one of rejected candidates for abpric. (Gesta Hen. II I 352, omitted in Houedene II 310; cf. EYC II no. 1057, of 1186 × 89). Occ. as this preb. 1190 × 94 (YMF I no. 44). Still alive after late 1198, but had been succeeded as archdcn. of Bedford by 6 June 1199 (1 Fasti III 42). Described as a wealthy man (The Life of St Hugh, ed. D. L. Douie and D. H. Farmer (2 vols.: OMT, 1985) II 85, cf. p. 80). Possibly to be identified with M. Laurence who occ. as can. Jan. 1151 × 14 Oct. 1153 (unident. preb., list 51).

M. Simon of Langton

First occ. as can. and this preb. 20 and 22 Nov. 1214 (Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 124a; Rot. Litt. Claus. I 178b). El. abp. of York ? June 1215; qua. by pope 20 Aug. 1215 (list 1). Also preb. of London (1 Fasti I 50). Excomm. 1216, depr. of benefices, presum. including this preb. 1217 (Chron. Maj. II 654-5, III 31). Archdcn. of Canterbury 1227-48 (see 1 Fasti II 14).

M. Alexander of Dorset

Royal coll. to this preb., s.v., with mandate to install, 20 Sept. 1215 (Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 156a). Evidently ineffective, as he had royal coll. to preb. Ulleskelf 20 Jan. 1216 (list 44).

Rufinus

Nephew of cardinal Guala, papal legate, so perhaps appd. 1217 or 1218; son of Manfred, a nobleman of Vercelli (see Letters of Guala p. 19). Occ. as this preb. 13 Nov. 1222 (Pat. Rolls 1216-25 p. 352). Pluralist, ordered to be content with income of 200m. 17 May 1234 and 23 Dec. 1234 (CPL I 140, 142 = Reg. Grég. IX nos. 1929, 2326). Also preb. of Lincoln and Exeter, which he was allowed to retain after being depr. of other benefices 29 March 1235 (Reg. Grég. IX no. 2500, cal. CPL I 145; 1 Fasti III 64). Had been succeeded in this preb. by 1227 (below).

M. John le Romeyn the elder

Perhaps to be identified as M. John Romanus who occ. as can. 1197 × 1201 (EYC XII no. 14) and ? 1201 (ibid. IX no. 112). Occ. as can. several times from before 1217 (ibid. I no. 242 note; Chs. Vicars Choral nos. 72, 124) to May 1228 (Reg. Gray p. 23). Acting on behalf of pope 1227-8 (Registrum S. Osmundi, ed. W. H. Rich Jones (RS lxxviii, 1883-4) II 82-3, 93-7, 99). Held land in Barkergate, York (Chs. Vicars Choral nos. 21-4) and Goodramgate (ibid. nos. 124-5, 136-7). Occ. as this preb. 1224 (Cart. Treas. York no. 38) and c. 1227 (EYC II no. 785), but presum. transf. to an unident. preb. before 25 Nov. 1240 (below). Subdean by 22 June 1228; last occ. 27 July 1240 (list 6). Archdcn. of Richmond by 5 Nov. 1241; last occ. 1252 (list 13). Treas. of York, first occ. 20 Aug. 1253; last occ. 15 July 1255; d. prob. c. 24 Dec. 1255 (list 5).

M. Robert Haget

Gerard de Vuippens

Can. by 5 Nov. 1289, papal indult to hold benefices without being ord. pr., with reservation of a parsonage or dignity of York (CPL I 505 = Reg. Nic. IV no. 1645; cf. CPL I 507 = Reg. Nic. IV nos. 1795-6 of 1 Dec. 1289). His proctor M. Franciscus occ. at York 15 Apr. 1290 and showed letter concerning Gerard's claim to next dignity 18 Apr. (Misc. Reg. fo. 1r). Studying in Orléans when he succeeded M. Henry of Newark as archdcn. of Richmond 15 May 1290 (list 13). Occ. as this preb. 21 Aug. 1292 (Cal. Charter Rolls II 423). Archdcn. and this preb. until cons. bp. of Lausanne 1301 (Reg. Corbridge II 13).
