The manor of Withington belonged to the church of Hereford from before 1066 and by 1086 4 hides of the manor were held by 3 clks. (DB I 181d). The 3 Withington prebs. (Church Withington, Ewithington and Withington Parva) presumably represent these holdings. In c. 1291 the preb., endowed with 4 bovates and a watermill at Ewithington, was assessed at £10 in pope Nicholas's taxation (Taxatio p. 169b: Eywytington) and in 1294 at 12m in the list entered into the register of bp. Swinfield (Reg. Swinfield p. 305: Wythinton aquosa). Valor III 10 assessed the preb. at £11 6s 8d (Gwythington).

Hervey of Boreham

Gravesend p. 113); occ. without title in a ch. of John de Burgh, son and heir of Hubert de Burgh, for Bermondsey priory 1270 (BL Harley 4757 fo. 13v); occ. without title 6 July 1271 (Westminster Domesday fo. 285v). Can. of Hereford (preb. unspecified at this point) by 8 Feb. 1271 (ibid. fo. 359v). Archdcn. of Shropshire by 1271 and prec. by 25 March 1272 (lists 3, 7). By 13 Aug. 1275 Cantilupe was proceeding against him for pluralism (Reg. Cantilupe p. 88). Can. of St Paul's from c. 24 June 1272 to 1274, when became dean of St Paul's (el. between 3 Jan. and 10 Oct.); last occ. as dean 17 June 1276; d. as dean 7 Oct. 1276 (1 Fasti I 8, 93); the reference to him in Reg. Cantilupe p. III, suggesting he was still alive 19 Nov. 1276, prob. means that Cantilupe was ignorant of his d. (1 Fasti I 8). His preb. can be identified as Ewithington because it was the one given 4 Jan. 1277 to M. William of St John (see next entry).
