Footnotes

  • 1. Fastolf made his profession before the high altar at Canterbury 'Absentibus dominis archiepiscopo et priore'.
  • 2. Richard de Medford is said to have been nominated by the king as bp. of St Davids 1389 (Menevia Sacra p. 58), but no evidence has been found for this. He had been prov. to the bpc. of Chichester 17 Nov. 1388 and made profession to abp. 7 May 1389 (Lamb., Reg. Courtenay f. 325).
  • 3. Griffin le Yonge obtained an abortive prov. to St Davids in 1407 by the schismatic pope Benedict XIII (Williams p. 224).
  • 4. In his profession to the abp. on 13 Nov. 1447, de la Bere stated 'A vobis consecrandus', which suggests that his consecration had not yet taken place.
  • 5. Richard Martin's obit was observed at Canterbury on 19 Nov. (Brit. Mus., Arundel MS. 68 f. 48b). It is probable that the March date is correct since Langton, his successor, was gr. custody of the temps. of the bpc. in May.
