  • 1. Thomas Elye is said to have been prior of Carlisle after Thomas de Hoton (VCH. Cumberland 11 151), but evidence for his holding this office comes from an inscription which does not appear to be still in existence. 'He (Thomas de Elye) built New Layth's Grainge near the city (Carlisle), on the walls of which his name is legible.' (J. Nicholson and R. Burn, History and Antiquities of the Counties of Cumberland and Westmorland (1777) 11 303.)
  • 2. Thomas prior of Carlisle occ. 14 March 1436 (Durham, Reg. Langley f. 226b), but it is not possible to know whether this is Thomas Barnaby or Thomas Hathwaite.
  • 3. Thomas Hathwaite occ. 11 Aug. 1457 as witness to a confirmation of a lease, but this document is not accessible (formerly in the Muniment Room, Lowther Castle, mentioned VCH. Cumberland 11 151).
  • 4. Christopher Slee is said to have been prior in 1528 since his name could be seen on an inscription on an arch of the north-west gate of the abbey precincts, dated 1528 (VCH. Cumberland 11 151).
