PREBENDARIES OF UFTON DECANI

Preb. valued 1535 at £2 13s 4d (Valor III 131).

Valor has Robert Sherwood at one Ufton and 'William -' at the other. The two prebs. of Ufton are very muddled in Le Neve-Hardy and Survey of Cath. The first occasion on which a preb. of Ufton is specified is in 1578 (see Ufton Decani, below), and this occ. provides the principal basis for deductions as to the identity of the early holders.

Footnotes

  • 1. Identified in Survey of Cath. as William Derley M.A. and said, without evidence, to have held preb. of Ufton Cantoris to 1560.
  • 2. Formerly abbot of Hailes, Glos. (Faculty Office Reg. 1534-49. ed. D.S. Chambers (Oxford, 1966) p. 208). Survey of Cath., followed by Le Neve-Hardy, gives him as adm. 20 July 1543, but evidence has not yet been found for this.
  • 3. Survey of Cath. gives him as adm. 4 Jan. 1549, but evidence has not been found for this.
  • 4. Survey of Cath., followed by Le Neve-Hardy, gives him as 'Thomas Powell', and says that he was depriv. by 15 June 1554 (i.e. because married), but no evidence has been found for this.
  • 5. N.B. Robert Beale instit. 1 Feb. 1561 to the other Ufton. They are definitely two different men. Survey of Cath., followed by Le Neve-Hardy, omits both William Beale and Stephen Hales.
