Footnotes

  • 1. Henry Rands was born at Holbeach, Lincs., and took this name on becoming a Benedictine monk at Crowland abbey. Unlike most ex-monks, he continued to be generally known by his monastic name. His will was proved by his wife Joan: he was thus the first married bishop of Lincoln and probably one of the first bishops in the country to take advantage of the act 2 & 3 Edw. VI c. 21 allowing priests to marry and retain their benefices (Statutes of the Realm IV 67).
  • 2. Brown Willis says of him that he was never 'in all his Life at Lincoln; so that he was commonly called the Bishop of Buckden, where he mostly lived' (Survey of Cath. II 71).
