Footnotes

  • 1. This rental is engrossed in the volume of Council Records 1588–90.
  • 2. The New Kirk was the Collegiate Church of St. Mary and St. Anne, founded by James Houston, subdean of Glasgow, about the year 1528. The endowments are fully detailed in "Liber Collegii Nostre Domine," printed for the Maitland Club in 1846, and notwithstanding the changes of ownership and occupancy which had occurred before the date of this rental, many of the properties can be identified with the original endowments. When the magistrates and council, in 1572–3, conveyed to the college the church property contained in Queen Mary's gift, the revenues specified in this rental as belonging to the New Kirk and its prebends of St. Andrew, St. Martin, the Three Choristers, Nomine Jesu and St. Roche, were excepted as coming within the category of chaplainries and prebends of which they (the magistrates and council) had the right of patronage. (See Glasgow Charters, part ii., pp. 160–1.)
  • 3. This rental is not dated, but as it is engrossed in the Diet Book of the Burgh Court for 1657–9, it may be regarded as belonging to that period. As shown by the marginal note quoted on p. 536, the rental must have been made up before 5th October, 1661.
  • 4. This entry deleted and the following written on the margin:—"This is appoyntit to be scoired out, be act of counsell daitit the fyft of October 1661."
  • 5. "This deleit out of the rentall becaus satisfeit at 17 yeares purchas."
