Writ, John, son and heir of John de Brewes, having been found to be an idiot, the escheator is to take into the king’s hand all the lands &c. of the said John de Brewes, deceased, and to ascertain who has been in possession of them and by what title. 20 April, 31 Edward III.
SURREY. Inq. taken at Wauton, 29 May, 31 Edward III.
Wauton. John de Brewes, deceased, did not hold the manor (extent given, including 200a. wood) on the day he died, but John earl of Warenne was in possession of it on that day, having an estate in it for life, after whose death it ought to revert to John de Brewes and his heirs. Mary countess Marscall had possession of the said manor for four years after the said earl’s death by demise of Sir Roger (sic), as the jury understand; afterwards John, son of John de Brewes, had possession for 3 1/2 years by grant of the countess; afterwards Thomas de Brewes, knight, had possession for 3 1/2 years by demise of the aforesaid John son of John, until the king ordered all the lands &c. of the aforesaid John de Brewes to be taken into his hand, and so the said Thomas held until this day. The aforesaid John de Brewes held no other lands &c. in the hundred of Coppedethorne. The said manor was charged by John earl of Warenne and John de Brewes, then lords thereof, with 1 1/2d. daily to Richard le Harpour, as appears more fully in their charters made to him and shown.
SURREY. Inq. taken at [Reyga]te, 27 May, 3[1] Edward III.
Reygate. Tenements called ‘Houlegh’ (extent given).
La Legh. Tenements called ‘Ernesheved’ (extent given).
Cherlewode. Tenements called ‘Wykes’ (extent given).
Margaret, late the wife of John de Brewes, deceased, occupied the above tenements in Reygate, having them in dower, and held them for her life as her dower of all the said John’s lands in Surrey, viz. for ten years before her death, which occurred two years ago last feast of St. Hilary. After her death Thomas de Brewes occupied the said tenements by demise and release of John son of John de Brewes … of the aforesaid Margaret, his mother, which Thomas held the said lands to farm by demise of the said Margaret, and so held them for two years until the king gave order for the taking of the lands of John de Brewes into his hand.
John earl of Warenne occupied the tenements called ‘Ernesheved’ for four years after the death of John de Brewes, and Mary countess Marscall occupied them for three years, by what title the jury know not; afterwards the said tenements lay vacant for two years because no one would have to do with them (intromittere) on account of the pestilence. One John Malemayn, chaplain, occupied them for two years by demise of John son of John de Brewes; and afterwards Thomas de Brewes occupied them for three years by demise of the same John.
The earl of Warenne occupied the tenements called ‘Wykes’ for four years after the death of John de Brewes, and Mary countess Marscall occupied them for three years, by what title they know not. Laurence Herfrey occupied them for four years, and afterwards Thomas de Brewes for three years.
Neudegate. Certain tenements called ‘Hogheles’ (extent given) held as of the right of Fromund Inge. After the death of John de Brewes John earl of Warenne occupied them for four years, and afterwards Mary countess Marscall for one year, by what title the jury know not. Afterwards Christina Inge and William de Watford and Mariota his wife brought a writ of assise of novel disseisin against John son of John de Brewes, Peter atte Purie, John Forster and others, then tenants of the said tenements, whose names the jury know not, by which the said tenements were recovered. Thus the aforesaid Christina, William and Mariota occupied and continued their seisin for four years. Afterwards Robert de la Poyle and Margaret his wife acquired the said tenements to them and their heirs of the aforesaid Christina, William and Mariota by a charter of feoffment and by a fine levied in 26 Edward III.; and so the said Robert de la Poyle occupied the said tenements for four years and more until the king gave order as above.
Cherlewode. A messuage and . . land held by Richard de Sloghtorwik of John de Brewes, deceased, by service of rendering 2s. yearly at his tenements called ‘Wykes.’ John de Brewes acquired the reversion thereof from the said Richard to himself and his heirs and granted it to Richard le Harpour and his heirs and delivered seisin thereof to him, and the aforesaid Richard de Sloghtorwik attorned to the aforesaid Richard le Harpour, who still continues his seisin. The aforesaid John de Brewes was not seised thereof on the day of his death, because he died five years before the death of the said Richard de Sloghtorwik. Further, John de Brewes made a writing to Richard le Harpour thereof for his greater security, and so the king did not intermeddle.
Cherlewode. 100a. arable called ‘Lombardesland’ held as above. They were let to farm this year, but had not been occupied since the said John’s death.
Neudegate. 40a. land called ‘Forsterslond’ held as above, unoccupied since the said John’s death.
‘Lombardeslond’ and ‘Forsterslond’ are charged with 4l. yearly to the countess of Warenne and for that reason have not been occupied since the said John’s death.
He held no other lands &c. in the hundred of Reygate.
