Wych. A yearly rent of 100l. from the town of Wych, paid by the men of Wych, held in fee tail, by the king’s charter, to the said earl and the heirs of his body.
He held no other lands &c. in the bailiwick. He died on the night of St. John’s day in Christmas week last. Joan his sister, whom Thomas de Holond, knight, married, aged 24 years and more, is his heir. In reply to another writ, the jurors say that the earl held no knights’ fees or advowsons of churches or any lands which could be extended in the bailiwick. |

The town remains mostly without inhabitant and the dwelling-houses broken down and empty, and none will hire (vult conducere) them.
He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died in the night following St. Stephen’s day in Christmas week last. Heir as above, aged 25 years and more at St. Michael last. |

The extent includes woods called ‘Chakkelewe’ and ‘Chirchedale,’ a water-mill and a fulling-mill and a lead mine, formerly worth 20l. yearly, but now stopped for want of workers. Beseby. The manor (extent given), in which there is no capital messuage but a vacant place (placea) called the site of the manor (scitus manerii), held of the king in chief by homage and fealty only. The extent includes rents from free tenants in Beseby, Neuton, Gunnerby, Briggesle, Askeby, Hawardeby, Alwaldeby and Northcotes. All of which were granted by Edward II to Edmund earl of Kent, father of the deceased, and the heirs of his body. Castre. A yearly farm of 50l. from the town and soke, similarly held in tail. Grimesby. A yearly farm of 50l. from the township, similarly held in tail. He had no other lands &c. in the county. He died on Thursday after St. Stephen last. The extent of the manor includes a capital messuage dyked (fossato inclus’), pasture in the coney warren always flooded in winter, a pasture called ‘Kyngeswode Heved,’ a park enclosed, a pasture called ‘Coresbrok,’ a fulling-mill demised to Ralph le Fuller, 4s. 6d. rent for carriage of salt, and a free fishery worth 3s. 3d. yearly in summer. The extent of Sutton includes a wood called Estewode.
Puryfrith. The manor (extent given) held in fee tail as above, as of the honour of Clare, of the pourparty of the heir of Hugh le Despenser, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee and by rendering at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff of Surrey 20d. yearly. Baggeshete. A messuage, 60a. arable, 8a. several pasture, 20a. wood and 10s. rent, held in fee tail as above, of Richard de Wyndesore by service of rendering to him (eidem) every 22 weeks 3s. 4d. to the ward of the castle of Wyndesore. Cotyngham and Wyveton. The manors with their members (extents given) held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a barony and finding an esquire mounted, fitly armed, to carry the king’s hauberk (loricam) in the Welsh war at his own costs for forty days if there should be war in Wales.
Cotyngham. The extent of Cotyngham includes a ‘salteng,’ pastures inundated by the river Humber, which has almost devastated the country there; a park with deer, a ferry across the Humber at Hesill; the ferry of Stanfrey; 4l. rent yearly from the burgesses of Beverley for ‘le dynges’; a yearly rent of 22 horse shoes, price 11d.; and in Cotyngham with its members Hulbank, Doncevale, Neuland, Eppelwyth, Northous and Pilford, 106l. 10s. 6d. rent and not more on account of the mortality and the want of tenants and the inundation of the Humber. Buttercrambe. The manor with its member Scrayngham (extent given), held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a knight’s fee. The extent mentions Burghgarth, Ravenbek, ‘le Malegarth’ and Swetapultregarth, and the manor is charged with a rent of 22s. yearly to the prior of St. Andrew’s, York. Kirkeby Moresheved. The manor with its members in Farndale, Gillyngmore, Brauncedale and Fademore (extents given, with field names), held of John de Moubray by service of 1 1/2 knights’ fees. The extent of Kirkeby includes a weekly market on Wednesday and a fair on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin; and the manor is charged time out of mind by the ancestors of the earl with 26s. 8d. yearly to the prioress of Keldholm and 13s. 4d. yearly to the vicar of the church of Kirkeby for tithe of the mill. Decrease in value of land &c. through the pestilence. Croppton and Middelton. The manor (extent given, with field names), with certain tenements in Hartoft, held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Decrease in value owing to the pestilence. The manor of Cropton is charged time out of mind by the ancestors of the said earl with 21s. 8d. yearly to the duke of Lancaster to the castle of Pykeryng for the fines of the wapentake and with 100s. yearly to the abbot of Byland (de Bella Landa) and his successors; and ten tofts and ten bovates of land in Middelton are charged time out of mind by the ancestors of the earl with 100s. yearly to Henry de Boys and his heirs. Aton. The manor (extent given, with field names), whereof the capital messuage and 14 bovates of land are held of the king in chief as of the crown by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee, and the residue is held of John Darcy as of the right of his wife by knight’s service and by rendering 3s. yearly to the said John and his wife and the heirs of his wife for fines of the wapentake. Hemelyngton. The manor (extent given) held of Ralph de Nevill by knight’s service. Langeton. Blanche, late the wife of Thomas Wake of Lydel, holds for life the manor of Langeton, with the knights’ fees &c. belonging thereto, by the king’s charter and licence, the reversion whereof pertains to the heir of the deceased. Compton, Colyngham and Berdesey. A certain yearly farm of 90l. issuing from the manors, held in fee tail to the deceased and the heirs of his body. The said manors are held of the king in chief by knight’s service as of the honour of Pontefract. The abbot and convent of Kirkestall and their successors pay the said farm, which the ancestors of the said earl had of the gift of the king’s progenitors.
