KENT. Inq. (indented) taken at Osprynge, 16 May, 47 Edward III.
Bokelond. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held for life by demise of Sibyl late the wife of Richard de Frogenale, now deceased, the reversion belonging to her and her heirs. John de Frogenale, aged 26 years, is Sibyl’s son and heir. The manor is held of the king, as of his castle of Ledes, as of the honor of Creuquer, by service of three-quarters of a knight’s fee.
Everardesfeld. A field of 53a. pasture so called, held for his life of the lord de Say by homage and fealty, the reversion belonging to the said Sibyl and her heirs.
He died on 24 April last. Henry de Apuldrefeld, aged 50 years and more, is his brother and heir.

DORSET. Inq. taken at Wymbournemenstre, Saturday after St. Mark, 47 Edward III.
Bradele in Purbyk. The manor, held jointly with Eleanor his wife, still living, of Roger de Bavente, knight, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee, as of his manor of Fyfhide, co. Wilts, which manor, with the knights’ fees thereto belonging, the said Roger gave to the king, who gave it to the prioress and convent of Dertford.
Holne in Purbyk. The manor, held jointly with Eleanor his wife of Edmund earl of March by knight’s service.
Little Kymerich. A messuage and 40a. land, held of John Clavile of Mordon by knight’s service.
He died on Wednesday after St. Nicholas, 46 Edward III. Thomas his son, aged 10 years and more, is his heir.

YORK. Inq. taken at York, 15 June, 47 Edward III.
Appilgarth. Two-thirds of a messuage and 4 bovates of land, held of the king in chief by service of a sixteenth part of a knight’s fee; and 2 bovates of land, held of the king by the service aforesaid.
He died on Thursday after the Invention of the Holy Cross last. Stephen Brunne, aged 32 years and more, is his brother and heir.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. (indented) taken at the church of St. Margaret, Westminster, 16 April, 47 Edward III.
He held of the king in chief for life the office of the ushership of the Exchequer with the appurtenances, (except the offices of the ushers of the Common Bench and the marshals, ushers, criers and barriermen in all eyres of justices in eyre in England, and except 5d. daily in that office to be received in the Receipt of the Exchequer while the Exchequer is open, and except three-fourths of the offices of the criers in the Common Bench, which are parcel of the said office of the ushership of the Exchequer), with reversion after his death to John de Keuermond and his heirs, by grants of Christiana daughter of William Gaunt of Bymbrok, John de Croxston and Maud his wife, and Beatrice daughter of the said William, with the king’s licence.
He died on 26 March last. Heir not known.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. (indented) taken at Russheton, Thursday the eve of St. Martin, 47 Edward III.
Russheton. The manor, with the advowson of St. Peter’s church there, held of Thomas le Roos, knight, as of his castle of Bevyr, service not known.
He died on 2 July last in parts beyond seas. Eleanor his sister, aged 22 years and more, wife of John Barle, is his heir.

DERBY. Inq. taken at Derby, Tuesday before St. Clement the Pope, 47 Edward III.
Netherhaddon. A moiety of manor (extent given), with its members, to wit, Roulesley and Aldport, held of the king in chief by service of a fifth part of a knight’s fee.

Milton Herneys. A messuage, 120a. arable, 8a. meadow, 4a. pasture, 6s. 8d. rent of assise of free tenants, and a fishery in the common water; and the reversion of 40a. land which John Basset, knight, granted to Norman Basset and Katharine Basset for the term of their lives. The said lands &c. and reversion are held of Roger Beauchamp, knight, as of the barony of Bedford, by knight’s service.
He died in the parts of Brittany, day not known. Heir as above.

Writ of mandamus as to the lands &c. held by the said John of the heir of John Bardolf, late a minor in the king’s wardship. 13 March, 47 Edward III.
NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Bishop’s Lenn, Wednesday after St. Ambrose, 47 Edward III.
He held no lands &c. of the said heir or others in his demesne as of fee or in service on the day of his death; but he held:—
Tiryngton. 10a. land, held jointly with Richard Atteboure and William de Balsham, both of whom survived him, by gift and feoffment of Nicholas Godard and Philip Taillour. Immediately after his death John Mareschale of Tiryngton and Nicholas Godard entered and had possession for half a year; and during their possession the said Richard and William released all their right therein to them. The premises are held of the heir aforesaid and the prior of Westacre by parcels, service not known.
15 1/2a. land with a messuage and a chace, whereof long before his death he enfeoffed John de Lyncoln, parson of the church of Socke, Laurence Mareschale, parson of the church of Totenhill, Thomas Walbode, chaplain, Geoffrey Coupman and Richard Atteboure and their heirs. Of these, Thomas, Geoffrey and Richard survived their co-feoffees and the said John Clerk, and released all their right in the premises to the said John Mareschale and Nicholas Godard, who had entered immediately after the death of John Clerk. The premises are held of Robert Howard, knight, the heirs of William de Dunton, knight, the heirs of John Walbode, and the prior of Westacre, service not known.
John Clerk died on Saturday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 43 Edward III. John his son, aged 4 years and more, is his heir. John Mareschale and Nicholas Godard have had possession of the premises and taken the profits thereof ever since his death.

NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Wirmegeye, Thursday after St. Hilary, 47 Edward III.
Tirryngton. A messuage and 22a. land, whereof 10a. are held of Sir William Bardolf, a minor in the king’s wardship at the time of John’s death, by homage and knight’s service, the messuage and 7a. are held of Alice late the wife of John Howard by fealty in socage, 3a. are held of the heirs of Sir William de Dunton by fealty in socage, and 2a. are held of Thomas Walbot, chaplain, by fealty in socage. Agnes late the wife of Nicholas Clerk, John’s father, held 12a. land of John’s inheritance in the same town by endowment of Nicholas, whereof 6a. are held of the heirs of Sir Robert de Causton, 1 1/2a. are held of the said Alice Howard, 3a. are held of the bishop of Ely, and 1 1/2a. are held of Laurence atte Dich, all by fealty in socage. Agnes survived John and died after (citra) the feast of St. Laurence, 43 Edward III. The said messuage and 22a. and the reversion of the 12a. descended to John, son and heir of the said John, aged 5 years, whose wardship belongs to the king by reason of the minority of the said Sir William Bardolf.
John Clerk died on the Saturday after St. Peter and St. Paul, 43 Edward III.
Thomas Calye, who espoused the said Agnes, had possession of 14a. 1r. with a moiety of the messuage as her dower for three years; but in the first year after John’s death the land lay untilled through a dispute between her and the executors of John. After the first year Thomas had possession of 10a. for three years in the name of John’s heir. Alice late the wife of John Howard and Sir Robert Howard had possession of 1a. 3r. for three years, and John Mareschal had possession of 8a. with a moiety of the messuage for four years.

Little Shobery. 26a. land.
Both held of the king by knight’s service, as of the honor of Reylegh. William Hynton had possession of them from her death on 14 November, 35 Edward III, until 14 November, 41 Edward III; John Wyot from then until 14 November, 46 Edward III; and Robert Broun from then onwards: they being successive under-bailiffs of the said honor.
Little Shobery. 21a. land, held of the prior of Berdene, service not known. The prior has had possession of them ever since her death, by what title or how the jurors know not.
Great Shobery. 70a. land and marsh, held of the prior of Pritewell, service not known. The prior has had possession of them ever since her death, by what title the jurors know not.
Date of death as above. Thomas son of John Odyn of Great Wakeryng is her kinsman and next heir, to wit, son of John son of Joan daughter of Thomas Sare her great-grandfather, and was 21 years of age on the feast of St. George last.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Winchester, 19 February, 47 Edward III.
Sutton Scoteneye. A moiety of the manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Gretham. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held in joint feoffment with Elizabeth his wife, who survives, by reason of a gift made by William le Erl, rector of the church of Gretham, and John Waryn, clerk, to him and Elizabeth and the heirs of his body, with remainder to his right heirs, as appears by a charter shewn to the jurors. The manor is held of the lord of the manor of Aulton by a rent of 4s. yearly.
Westbury. The manor.
Empnesworth. The manor.
Both held in joint feoffment with the said Elizabeth by reason of a gift made by Richard Abbot, rector of the church of Grytham, to him and Elizabeth and his heirs, as appears by another charter shewn to the jurors. The manor of Westbury is held of Luke de Ponyngges, knight, by knight’s service and suit to the said Luke’s court of Basyng every three weeks; and the manor of Empnesworth is held of John de Monte Acuto, knight, by a rent of 6d. yearly.
He died on 8 February last. John, his son by the said Elizabeth, aged 10 years and more, is his heir.

Westchelberghe. The manor and the advowson of its church, held of Sir John de Mohun of Dunsterre by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee.

HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Chesthunt, 20 October, 47 Edward III.
The following came to the king’s hands by the death of John Darcy, who held of the king in chief, and by reason of the minority of John his son and heir:—
Cressebroke. The manor, held of the earl of Richmond in socage by service of 56s. 3d. yearly.
Chesthunt. A messuage, 35a. land and 5a. meadow, held of Richard Perers by service of a pair of gilt spurs yearly.
The said heir died on 26 August, 36 Edward III. Philip Darcy, knight, aged 21 years and more, is his brother and heir.
Alan de Buksill, knight, has had possession of the premises and received the issues thereof since the death of John Darcy by grant of the king.

NOTTINGHAM AND DERBY. Inq. taken at Ekynton, Wednesday before St. Martin, 47 Edward III.
The said John son of John, who was a minor in the king’s wardship, held the following:—
Ekynton, co. Derby. The manor, held of the king in chief.
Kirkeby, co. Nottingham. The manor, held of the king in chief.
Stretton in the Cley, co. Nottingham. The manor, held of the earl of Pembroke in socage by service of 48s. yearly; and a fifth part of a knight’s fee, held of William Pratte by service of 5s. 3d.
Nottingham county. The king by his charter granted to John Darcy, knight, grandfather of the deceased, and his heirs, 39 marks and 10s. yearly of the issues of the said county during the life of Mary countess of Pembroke, who holds for life certain lands the reversion whereof the king granted to the said John and his heirs. John the grandfather died in seisin of the said rent, as did John his son and heir. After the latter’s death the king granted the rent to Isabel the king’s daughter during the minority of John son and heir of the said John the son.
John the grandson died on 6 August, 36 Edward III. Heir as above, aged 21 years on 6 May last.
Roger de Chestrefeld and his executors had and still have possession of the manors of Ekynton and Kirkeby by the king’s grant, and William de Retford and his executors had and still have possession of the manor of Stretton by the like grant.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Gaynesburgh, Wednesday the Commemoration of Souls, 47 Edward III.
The following came to the king’s hands by the death of John Darcy of Knayth and by reason of the minority of John his son and heir, and are still in the king’s custody, to wit:—
Knayth. The manor, held of the bishop of Lincoln, as of his manor, of Stowe, by the foreign service.
Suthorp. The manor, held of John duke of Lancaster by homage and the foreign service.
Kesseby. A messuage, 4 tofts, 20a. arable, 8a. meadow and 20a. pasture, held of the prioress of Henynges and Huth Oliver by the foreign service.
Upton. 40s. yearly rent from John de Coryngham, now tenant there, and 13s. 10d. yearly rent from divers tenants at will there. The lands from which the above rents issue are held of Edmund de Cornewaill and the prioress of Henynges by knight’s service.
Torkeseye. A toft and 2a. 1r. arable, held of Mary countess of Pembroke by fealty and service of 4 1/2d. yearly.
Gaynesburgh. A toft in ruins, held of the earl of Athol by service of 6d. yearly.
Leemerssh. 5a. meadow, held of the manor of Lee by service of 2s. 6d. yearly.
The said John son of John died in August [36 Edward III]. Philip his brother, aged 21 years on 5 May last, is his heir.
[Since his death] the king has had possession of all the premises and received the profits thereof.
Torkeseye. The manor with its members [will remain] to the aforesaid Philip after the death of Mary countess of Pembroke.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Felton, Thursday, 16 November, 47 Edward III.
The following came to the king’s hands as above:—
Hadeston. The manor (extent given), held by service of one knight’s fee, 13s. 4d. for castle-guard and 15d. for cornage. The extent includes a meadow called ‘le Fryth,’ a yearly rent of 13s. 4d. in Akton, plots called ‘le Heron’ and ‘le Haynyng,’ and a rent of 1 lb. pepper from Espley.
Swynneburne and Collewell. The towns, held of the said manor by knight’s service, 3s. 4d. for castle-guard and 15d. for cornage. The manor is held of the king in chief.
No other lands &c. in the county came to the king’s hands as above.
Newcastle upon Tyne. John Darcy, ‘le fitz,’ father of the deceased, died in seisin of 90l. 16s. 8d. rent of the farm of the town during the life of Mary countess of Pembroke, which rent the king by charter granted to John Darcy, ‘le piere,’ father of the said John, and his heirs, for the life of the said countess, in recompense for the office of justice of Ireland and the fees receivable, which the said John ‘le piere’ had for life by the king’s grant and surrendered into the king’s hands, as appears by the king’s charter dated 18 February, 18 Edward III. John ‘le piere’ and John ‘le fitz’ successively died in seisin of the rent; and after the death of the latter the king seized it by reason of the minority of John his son and heir. The rent is held of the king.
The said John son of John died on 26 August, 36 Edward III. Heir as above, aged 21 1/2 years.
Alan de Strothere has the said manor of Hadeston at farm of the king.
YORK. Inq. taken at Stokesley, Friday the feast of St. Martin, 47 Edward III.
The following came to the king’s hands as above:—
Notton. The manor (extent given), held of John duke of Lancaster by homage and fealty and service of 17s. 4d. yearly for fines of the wapentake and for blanch farm, and by service of doing suit to the said duke’s court of the honor of Pontefract ……… And there is a tenement in Wollay (extent given) pertaining to the said manor, which is held of the same duke by knight’s service and 7s. yearly. A messuage and 2 bovates of land in Notton came to the king’s hands after the death of Agnes de Notton, which happened in May, 37 Edward III. She had them for life by grant of Sir John Darcy, ‘le piere,’ with reversion to Sir John and his heirs.
Silkeston. The manor came to the king’s hands after the death of Thomas Chamberleine by reason of the minority of John son of John Darcy, ‘le fitz,’ the king’s ward. Thomas had the manor for life by grant of Sir John Darcy, ‘le fitz,’ with remainder to the right heirs of the said Sir John. The manor is held of the said duke of Lancaster by knight’s service. Thomas died in 38 Edward III, as the jurors understand.
No other lands came to the king’s hands by the death of John Darcy of Knayth or by reason of the minority of John his son and heir.
[Templeherst] and Temple Neusom. The manors ought to revert after the death of Mary de Sancto Paulo, countess of Pembroke, to the right heirs of the said John Darcy of Knayth.
Scardeburgh. John Darcy, ‘le fitz,’ father of the deceased, died seised to him and his heirs of 66l. rent of the farm of the town during the life of Mary countess of Pembroke, which rent the king by charter granted to John Darcy, ‘le piere,’ father of the said John, and his heirs, for the life of the said countess, in recompense for the office of justice of Ireland, which the said John ‘le piere’ had for life by the king’s grant and surrendered to the king, as appears by the king’s charter to the said John dated 18 February, 18 Edward III. John ‘le piere’ and John ‘le fitz’ successively died in seisin of the rent; and after the death of the latter the king seized it by reason of the minority of John his son and heir and committed it to Isabel the king’s daughter until the lawful age of the said heir or until some other heir should reach full age. The rent is held of the king.
The said John son of John died in August, 36 Edward III. Heir as last above.
Peter de Routhe holds all the premises of the king at farm.

SURREY. Inq. (indented) taken at Southwerk, 23 April, 47 Edward III.
Bretynghurst. The manor, held of the king in chief, service not known. Ever since his death John Trop has had possession of the manor and received the issues thereof by the king’s grant by letters patent.
Basynges. The manor, held of Henry Bekwell by fealty and 5s. 10d. rent yearly. Ever since his death Robert Littel and Joan his wife have had possession of the manor and received the issues thereof, title not known.
The said Thomas died on 1 August, 43 Edward III. Edward his son, aged 7 years, is his heir.

257. ROGER DUKET, or DOKET, of Notyngham.
Writ of precipimus, on an allegation by Roger Duket that he is son and next heir of the said Roger. 15 May, 47 Edward III.
NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Notyngham, Tuesday before Whitsun, 47 Edward III.
Notyngham. 8 cottages and 6r. land in the town and fields of Notyngham, held of the king in chief by service of being bailiff errant in the counties of Nottingham and Derby by the king’s grant by letters patent of 11 Edward III to him and his heirs. For the last 26 years Margaret his wife has had possession of 2 cottages with the king’s licence, the king has had possession of 5 cottages and has had the profit thereof by the escheator, and Richard Fromond of Notyngham has had possession of one cottage and the land without the king’s licence.
Carleton. A messuage and 4a. land, held of Thomas de Whatton by service of 10s. yearly.
Gedelyng. 20a. land and 1a. meadow, held of Adam de Everyngham and Brian Normanvyle by knight’s service.
The tenements in Carleton [and Stoke] (fn. 2) were in the possession of Richard de Heyham for 6 years, of Roger de Hoppewelle the father for 6 years, and of Roger de Hoppewelle the son for 6 years, by what title the jurors know not. Adam Boteler of Gedelyng has had possession of the land in Gedelyng.
He died on Monday the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 21 Edward III. Roger his son, aged 32 years and unmarried, is his heir.

SOMERSET. Inq. (indented) taken at Welles, Tuesday after the Assumption, 47 Edward III.
Wotton by Bodecle. A messuage, 40(?)a. land and 5a. meadow, held for the lives of himself and Alice his wife in survivorship, according to the custom of the manor, of the abbot of Glastonbury by a yearly rent of 15s. 8d. Alice has accordingly had possession of them ever since his death.
Bruggewatre. A burgage tenement, held of the earl of March by a rent of 6d. yearly. The bailiffs of the borough have taken the issues ever since his death.
He died on 16 December, 43 Edward III. Adam Osmond, his uncle, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.

Chalfhunte St. Giles. A messuage, a virgate of land and 37s. yearly rent, held of the king in chief by knight’s service; and a messuage and a virgate of land, held of Philip la Vache, knight, by service of rendering 4d. yearly and suit of court twice a year.
He died on Monday before St. Laurence, 43 Edward III. Roger his son, now aged 21 years and more, is his heir.
Since his death Walter Baillif of Chalfhunte aforesaid has had possession of the premises by the king’s commitment on account of the minority of the heir.

261. RICHARD ATTE GATE.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Smethfeld, 31 January, 48 Edward III.
Portepole. 3a. land, held of the lady de Fererys, service not known; and 5a. land, held of the dean and chapter of St. Paul’s, London, by service of 4s. yearly.
Smythfeld. A brewhouse with 3 shops, held of the prior of St. John of Jerusalem in England by service of 13s. 4d. yearly.
He died on 10 December, 47 Edward III, and had no heir because he was a bastard and died without heir of himself. He wilfully killed himself by hanging with a cord in his own house, and had goods in Smythfeld to the value of 26s. 8d., which Thomas de Frowyk, steward of the king’s household, caused to be seized for the king’s use because the said felony was at that time committed within the verge; and he has to answer to the king therefor.

LEICESTER. Inq. made at Atheloxton, Wednesday the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle, 47 Edward III.
Carleton Curly. 13s. 4d. rent from a moiety of a carucate of land which William de Weston of Carleton Curly held of him for life by demise of Alice Halcut, his mother, whose heir he was, with reversion to his heirs. He held the said land of Henry de Ferrariis by knight’s service, amount not known.

Lyefeld. Alice his mother, whose heir he was, formerly the wife of John Wardieu, died in seisin of 29a. land called ‘Kalkeleyes,’ and a parcel of land called ‘Swynclyf,’ held of the king in chief by service of rendering 4s. 4d. yearly by the hands of the sheriff. Ever since her death the said lands have been in the king’s hand, and he has received the issues thereof by the hands of the escheators.
Braundeston. The manor, held of the king, as of his manor of Okham, services not known.
Lye. The manor, held of Sir John Wade by service of 40s. yearly.
Uppyngham. A parcel of land called ‘Stybbynges’ and a parcel of meadow, tenure not known.
Of these last three items, together with lands &c. in co. Leicester, he enfeoffed Richard parson of the church of Wihtecok and others on Friday after the Circumcision, 45 Edward III.

Brackele and Hals. The manors, held of the king in chief by service of a sore sparrow-hawk yearly. Adam de Preston and William de Wyrkesworth were seised thereof, and granted them to Robert de Holand and Maud his wife for their lives by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence, with remainder to Robert their son, now deceased, and the heirs of his body; and he died seised of such estate therein.
Kyngessutton. The manor, held in fee tail of Roger de (sic) Straunge, knight, in socage by fealty only.
Thorp Watervill and Achirch. The manors, held of the abbot of Peterborough by knight’s service and a rent of 1d. yearly.
Aldewyncle. The manor, held of the same abbot at a rent of 60s. yearly at fee-farm.
Chelveston. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster, service not known.
These last four manors were granted by the above-mentioned Adam and William, by a fine levied in the king’s court, to Robert de Holand for life, with remainder to Robert de Holand, his son, now deceased, and the heirs male of his body; and the last-named Robert died seised of such estate therein.

LEICESTER. Inq. made at Leycestre, Saturday before St. Ambrose, 47 Edward III.
Baggeworth. The manor, extending into the towns of Baggeworth and Thornton (extents given). The extents include (1) in Baggeworth a capital messuage called the castle, ponds round the manor which have not been restocked since the dams were broken, a several pasture called ‘Lyndrych’ and a park with deer, and (2) in Thornton a close of underwood called ‘Thorniclos.’ The premises in Baggeworth he held of the earl of Leicester by knight’s service, amount not known, except the pasture called ‘Lyndrych’ which he held of the earl of Pembroke by service of 40s. yearly; and the premises in Thornton he held of the earl of Warwick by knight’s service, amount not known.
Shepeshed. A third part of two small groves, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, amount not known.
Leycestre. 6s. 8d. yearly rent from a messuage.
He died on Wednesday after St. Gregory. Heir as first above, aged 17 years on the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle last.

Shepeshed. A third part of the manor, held of the king in chief. Long before his death he demised certain lands &c. and 9l. yearly rent of the said third part to William la Zouche without the king’s licence, for which cause the escheator has seized the tenements so given into the king’s hand.
