CAMBRIDGE [AND BEDFORD]. Inq. taken at Dudyngton, 15 January, 45 Edward III.
Clopton and Craudene. A messuage, a cottage and 26a. arable, held in right of Alice his wife of Baldwin de Bereford, knight, and the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, service not known.
Gildenmordon. A messuage, a cottage, 20a. arable and 4s. rent, similarly held of Thomas Fastolf and William Heron, knights, service not known.
Eyworthe, co. Bedford. A messuage, 16a. arable and 2a. meadow, similarly held of Adam Fraunceys by service of one …… yearly.
He died on Thursday after St. Andrew, 45 Edward III. Thomas his son, aged 2 years and more, is his next heir.
John Hunt (fn. 1) has had possession of all the premises and received the profits thereof by the king’s letters patent dated 26 October, 45 Edward III.

106. JOAN LATE THE WIFE OF THOMAS GRAVESENDE.

ESSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Stratford, Wednesday after St. Andrew, 45 Edward III.
Little Thorrok. The manor, held of the bishop of London, services not known, by gift of William atte Welle, chaplain, and Richard Pope to her and the said Thomas and the heirs of their bodies by a fine levied in the king’s court in the quinzaine of Michaelmas, 12 Edward III.
She died on Thursday the eve of the Assumption last. Cecily daughter of the said Thomas and Joan, aged 7 years and more, and Joan daughter of (blank) their other daughter, aged 12 years and more, are their next heirs.

KENT. Inq. (indented) taken at Derteford, 4 October, 45 Edward III.
Gravesende. 2a. land, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, which, together with the manor of Gravesende, were formerly held by Henry Craumvyle of the king in chief by knight’s service and by rendering 10s. every 20 weeks for ward of Dover castle; and 38a. land, held of the same manor in gavelkind by service of rendering 12s. 4d. yearly to the manor and suit of court.
Melton by Gravesende. 120a. land, held of the manor of Wodeford, co. Essex, by service of a pair of gilt spurs or 6d. yearly, and by service of 6s. yearly for ward of Rochester castle; and a messuage and 80a. land, held of the countess of Pembroke by suit to the court of Melton every three weeks, and by service of rendering yearly 58s., 14 hens and 2 lbs. pepper.
(Place not given.) Pasture for 10 oxen and 4 horses, held of the same countess by payment of 21d. yearly.
Swannescombe. 2a. salt meadow.
Nutstede. The manor, held of the manor of Horton by suit to the court of the said manor every three weeks, and by service of rendering a ‘trenche’ of ‘skarlet’ yearly. It is bound to pay 10s. every 24 weeks for ward of Dover castle.
Date of death as above. Her heirs are Joan her kinswoman, aged 12 years, and Cecily her daughter, aged 7 1/2 years.

107. ROBERT GOLAFRE of STAUNTON.
Writ of mandamus, 20 May, 45 Edward III.
HEREFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Leoministre, 1 June, 45 Edward III.
Staunton Logerous. 12a. land, held of Geoffrey de Cornubia, a minor in the king’s wardship, as of the manor of Stepelton, which is of the inheritance of the said Geoffrey and is held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Netherstaunton. A messuage and a virgate of land, held of Walter de Hopton, knight, by service of 2s. yearly.
He died on 20 April, 22 Edward III. William his son, aged 30 years and more, is his next heir.
From the time of his death the premises in Netherstaunton have been in the possession of William, and those in Staunton Logerous in the possession of the escheators for the time being by virtue of their office, and the escheators have satisfied the king of the issues on their account at the Exchequer.

SUFFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Clare, Friday before SS. Simon and Jude, 45 Edward III.
Cavendysh. 32a. wood and 1a. meadow, held of the king in chief by knight’s service; and a manor called ‘Greyeshalle,’ held of the earl of March, John de Cavendysh and other lords, services not known.
Denardeston. The manor, held of the earl of March and other lords, services not known.
About Whitsuntide, 43 Edward III, he enfeoffed William Bawde, knight, the younger, Ralph Walsham and others of the premises, without the king’s licence, on condition that he might re-enter thereon when he returned from beyond seas. He returned about the feast of All Saints in the same year, and re-entered and took the profits and died seised of the premises in such wise. Before the said feoffment he granted by his writing a yearly rent of 40 marks from the manor of Greyeshalle to Alice late the wife of Thomas de Grey, knight, his father, for life. In the year 40 Edward III the said Thomas by his writing granted a yearly rent of 20 marks from the manor of Denardeston to Thomas his son for life.
Roger died on 16 September last. Adam his son, aged half a year, is his heir.
Endorsed: Margaret late the wife of the said Roger appoints Robert Homeresleye and John Sokburn (?) as her attorneys to sue for her dower out of the king’s hands.
Writ to the escheator,—on a petition from the above-mentioned Alice praying the king to order the said rent of 40 marks yearly to be delivered to her while the manor of Greyeshalle is in his hand on account of the minority of the heir,—to enquire whether Roger was seised of the manor in fee simple or fee tail or for life or for a term of years when he granted her the said rent, whether the manor is held of the king or others, and by what service, how much the manor is worth beyond the said 40 marks, whether the grant of the rent was made by collusion or in good faith, at what time and in what manner it was made, whether Alice was seised of the rent in Roger’s lifetime, and whether she remitted her estate therein at any time. 20 April, 46 Edward III.
Writ to the escheator,—on a petition from the above-mentioned Thomas son of Thomas de Grey, brother of Roger son of Thomas de Grey of Cavendissh, knight, praying the king to order livery to be made to him, while the manor of Denardeston is in the king’s hand on account of the minority of Roger’s heir, of a rent of 40l. from the said manor which Thomas Grey, knight, granted him for life by a writing dated on Friday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 38 Edward III,—to enquire whether Thomas the father was seised of the said manor in fee simple or fee tail or for life or for a term of years or otherwise, whether he was of full age and of sound mind and out of prison when he made the grant, whether the grant was of 40l. yearly, as alleged, or of 20 marks yearly, as stated in the above inquisition, whether the manor is held of the king or of others, &c. (as in the preceding writ, mutatis mutandis). 7 May, 46 Edward III.
SUFFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Barewe, Tuesday after the Ascension, 46 Edward III.
Denardeston. Thomas de Grey, knight, was seised of the manor in fee simple. He was of full age &c. when he granted 40l. yearly therefrom to Thomas de Grey, his son, by his writing dated as above. The manor is held of the earl of Stafford, as of the honor of Gloucester, service not known. The grant was made in good faith. Thomas the son was seised of 20 marks yearly for four years and more in the lifetime of Thomas his father, and not of 40l., and continued his seisin until Michaelmas last, since when the said rent has been and still is in arrear. The manor is worth nothing yearly beyond the said 20 marks. Thomas the son never remitted his estate in the said rent.
Cavendissh. Roger de Grey, knight, being of full age &c., was seised of the manor called ‘Greyeshall’ in fee simple, and granted a yearly rent of 40 marks therefrom to the said Alice. The manor is held by parcels of the earl of March, as of the honor of Clare, of John de Cavendissh, of Thomas Cornerde and of John Boldesore, service not known. It is worth nothing yearly beyond the said 40 marks. The grant of the rent was made in good faith. Alice was seised of the rent for two years and more in Roger’s lifetime, and continued her seisin until Michaelmas last, since when the rent has been and still is in arrear. She never remitted her estate in the rent.

SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, 12 August, 45 Edward III.
Hopton. The manor, held of Richard earl of Arundel by knight’s service.
He died on 10 November, 42 Edward III. John, aged 28 years and more, son of Elizabeth his daughter by John de Cherleton son of Alan de Cherleton, is his next heir, and as such has had possession of the manor since his death.

111. THOMAS SON AND HEIR OF JOHN DE HUNTYNGFELD, knight, of Little Lynton.
Writ of precipimus, 18 February, 45 Edward III.
CAMBRIDGE. Inq. taken at Cambridge, 8 March, 45 Edward III.
Great Lynton. A messuage and 1/2a. land, held of William Parkere by service of rendering 2d. yearly.
Little Lynton. The reversion of the manor, now held for life by Beatrice his mother by gift of Henry Darcy and Hugh, parson of the church of Zeldham. It is held of the duke of Lancaster by service of rendering 5s. yearly and by suit to the court of Badburham every month.
He died on the morrow of St. Matthew, 43 Edward III, being 21 1/2 years of age and more. Henry Huntyngfeld, his uncle, aged 60 years and more, is his heir.
Within half a year after he came of age, John Sleford, parson of the church of Balsham, purchased the premises of him, and so has received the profits meanwhile.

112. JOHN DE ISILHAM.
Writ of mandamus, 12 December, 45 Edward III.
LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 8 January, 45 Edward III.
He died in 23 Edward III, day not known, seised of:—
Parish of St. Bride, Fletestrete. A tenement worth 10 marks yearly.
After his death Thomas his son and heir entered and received the issues and died in seisin. Margaret Dachet is his kinswoman, but whether she is his heir or Thomas has some other heir the jurors know not. After the death of Thomas, Ellen late the wife of Thomas de Eboraco held the tenement and received the issues until she enfeoffed William atte Celer, by what title the jurors know not. William then held the tenement and received the issues until he enfeoffed John atte Celer, who now holds it and receives the issues. The tenement is held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Nottingham, Saturday after Corpus Christi, 45 Edward III.
He held no lands on the day of his death.
He died on Monday after the Translation of St. Thomas, 43 Edward III.

115. RICHARD DE KETELESHAWE.
Writ of mandamus, 11 September, 45 Edward III.
NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Pulham, Thursday after St. Hilary, 45 Edward III.
Pulham. A messuage, 53a. land, 10a. meadow and 6a. wood, held of the bishop of Ely, as of his manor of Pulham, by service of 24s. 4d. yearly and fealty.
He died about the Assumption, 18 Edward II. Adam his firstborn son, aged 32 years and more, was his heir.
After his death the said Adam had possession of the premises and received the profits until the feast of All Saints, 4 Edward III, about which time he died. Beatrice and Alice, his daughters, were his heirs, and as such had possession of the premises and received the issues. Beatrice married John Cursoun, who had issue by her; and she and the said issue died about St. Peter’s Chains, 34 Edward III. Since then the said John has had possession of a moiety of the premises for life by the courtesy of England. The reversion of the said moiety after his death ought to descend to Alice, sister of the said Beatrice, who has married John Coupere of Pulham. He and Alice survive, and hold the other moiety, she being one of the heirs of Adam.

116. EDMUND DE KENDALE, knight.
Writ of mandamus, Winchester, 13 June, 45 Edward III.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Winchester, 18 June, 45 Edward III.
Rokeford and Heywode. 4 messuages and 6a. land, held of Oliver Punchardoun by a rent of 12d. yearly. Long before his death he granted these to Philip his son and Alice Belowe, his servant, for life, with reversion to himself and his heirs, so that he held nothing in his demesne as of fee at the time of his death.
Date of death and heir not known.
After his death John de Norton had possession of the premises by demise of Philip until his own death, when the king seized them into his hand and still takes the issues by reason of the minority of John’s heir.

NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Fakenham, Monday the eve of the Epiphany, 45 Edward III.
Fakenham. The manor (extent given), held jointly, as above, of the king in chief, service not known. The extent includes a market held every Thursday, 37l. 0s. 4 1/2d. rents of assise, whereof the collector receives by custom 13s. 4d. as his stipend, and a leet held once a year.

NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Wyghton, Saturday after the Circumcision, 45 Edward III.
Wyghton. The manor (extent given), with the hundred of Northgrenhowe pertaining thereto, held jointly, as above, of the king in chief, service not known. The extent includes a rent called ‘warppeny,’ a rent from a plot called ‘commune market,’ a leet held once a year, and a leet of the said hundred.

Aylesham. Certain tenements by the name of a manor (extent given), held jointly, as above, of the king in chief, service not known. The extent includes a moor, a market held every Saturday, a house in the market called ‘Tollehous,’ a yearly fair on Michaelmas day, and a leet held yearly on the feast of St. Peter’s Chains.

Endorsement that he cannot execute the writ, because the jurors find that Robert is still alive.

Saham. The manor (extent given), held jointly, as above, of the king in chief, as of his crown, by service of one knight’s fee. It was charged with payment of 8s. 1d. yearly to Baldwin Seint Jorge for a messuage and 30a. land in Fordham which are part thereof. The extent includes a fishery called ‘Selode,’ a fishery in the mere (mara), 30s. 8d. rent of the marsh, and tolls of a ferry.

He died in 23 Edward III. William his son, aged 21 years on the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, is his heir.
Hugh de Colyngham and Margaret his wife have had possession of the premises since Walter’s death by demise of the king.

Writ, 20 October, 45 Edward III.
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Morpath, Thursday before St. Nicholas, 45 Edward III.
Belford. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
Benley. The manor, held in chief of Henry, lord de Percy, by service of rendering 12 marks yearly.
Westlilleburn. The manor, in the hands of tenants at will.
Shauden. The manor, consisting of 4 carucates of poor and waste land.
Glanton. 6 husband-lands, in the hands of tenants at will.
These three items are held of John de Mountagu, lord of Werk upon Tweed, as of the barony of Werk, by knight’s service and by service of rendering 13s. 4d. yearly for ward of the castle at the feast of St. Cuthbert in September.
Glanton. A messuage and 40a. land held by Adam son of Hugh, a messuage and 20a. land held by Adam de Glanton, a cottage and 8a. land held by Richard de Glanton, a messuage and 20a. land held by Richard de Cranlaw, a messuage and 20a. land held by John Broune, and a messuage and 20a. land held by John de Glanton; all held freely of the said William at a rent of 1d. yearly for each.
William died on Monday in the fifth week of Lent last past. John his son, aged 22 years and more, is his heir. Katharine late the wife of John de Lilleburn, knight, holds in dower by assignment of the said William a moiety of the town (sic) of Belford and Yesyngton, the reversion whereof belongs to the said heir.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. (indented) taken at Great Okie, 8 April, 45 Edward III.
Great Okle. A moiety of the manor, and 3 carucates of land and meadow belonging thereto, held of Mary de Sancto Paulo, countess of Pembroke, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
He died on Tuesday before St. Bartholomew last. Isabel Lyouns, aged 40 years, Cecily Lyouns, aged 33 years, and Christina Lyouns, aged 26 years and more, are his daughters and heirs, and as such have had possession of the premises ever since his death.

121. JOHN DE MULTON.
Writ of precipimus, 10 July, 45 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Lincoln, Tuesday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 45 Edward III. (Fourteen jurors).
Mithyngesby. The advowson of the church, held of the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, service not known.
He held no other lands &c. in the parts of Lyndeseye or Kesteven, because long before his death he alienated the following to Thomas de Mapelton, parson of the church of Frampton, [Roger] de Meres of Kirketon, John de Cobeldyk of Frampton, Roger Tope, Thomas Claymond, and Richard de Welby of Kirketon:—
Mithyngesby. The manor, held of John duke of Lancaster by knight’s service, the deceased reserving the advowson to himself and his heirs.
Kirkebylaylthorp. The manor, held of Edward prince of Wales by service of 8s. rent yearly.
Ingelby. The manor, held of the prince by service of 10s. 8d. yearly.
Salfletby. 15a. land and meadow.
Somercotes. 15a. land and meadow and 6l. yearly rent.
These last two items are held in socage of John duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Richemund. The profits of the court there are worth 20s. yearly.
Basyngham. 2 carucates of land, held of the honor of Huntyngdon by fealty and suit to the court there every three weeks.
Hemmyngby. 2 carucates of land and rent, held of the lord Fitz Wauter by knight’s service.
Conyngesby by Tateshale. 30s. yearly rent.
Wodenderby. 6 marks yearly rent.
These last two items are held of the bishop of Carlisle by fealty and suit every three weeks to the court of Horncastre.
John died about Michaelmas, 42 Edward III. Maud his daughter, who is 5 years of age and married to William son of William de Spayne of Boston, is his heir. The said feoffees have had possession of the lands alienated and taken the profits from the time of the feoffment.

122. HENRY DE MERLAUNDE.
Writ, 25 September, 45 Edward III.
SOMERSET. Inq. (indented) taken at Frome, 24 October, 45 Edward III.
Orchardelegh. The manor, held jointly with Margaret his wife, who survives, for the term of their lives, with remainder to his heirs, of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee, the king’s licence having been obtained.
Eggeford. A messuage, a carucate of land, 4a. meadow, 3a. wood, and 106s. 8d. yearly rent, held of the heirs of Andrew Braunche in free socage, namely, by service of a pair of gilt spurs or 6d. yearly.
Porteshevede. The manor, held for his life of the duke of Lancaster by grant of Thomas de Halle, with remainder for life to Thomas’s daughter Joan, now the wife of William de Stodelegh, and after her death to the right heirs of Thomas.
He died on 14 September last. John his son, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.

123. JOAN LATE THE WIFE OF HENRY DE MERLAUND.
Writ of precipimus, 22 November, 45 Edward III.
SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Frome, Saturday before the Epiphany, 45 Edward III.
Orchardlegh. A third part of the manor, held for life by way of dower by assignment of Henry, son and heir of Henry de Merlaund, sometime her husband. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee.
She died on 15 June, 22 Edward III. John son of Henry son of Henry de Merlaund, aged 22 years and more, is her heir.
The said Henry the son had possession of the said third part as his inheritance from the time of Joan’s death until 14 September last, when he died. On that day William Cheyne, then escheator, took it into the king’s hand and had possession of it until he delivered it to Edmund Cheyne, now escheator.

124. ROGER DE NORWYCH.
Writ, 10 August, 45 Edward III.
NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Bokenham, Saturday before the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, 45 Edward III.
Carleton, Bonewelle and Tybenham. The manor of Hadeston called ‘Peryshalle’ (extent given), with the advowson of the church of Carleton and of a mediety of the church of Bonewell, held of Walter Mauney by service of one knight’s fee. The extent includes a pasture called ‘Calfhawe.’
He died on Sunday before St. Barnabas last. John de Norwico, knight, aged 19 years and more, son of Walter de Norwico, is his next heir in blood.
Kymberle. The manor, held by gift and grant of Walter de Norwico to him and the heirs of his body, with successive remainders to Thomas son of the said Walter for life, and to Katharine de Brewes and her heirs. Roger is dead without heir of himself; Thomas son of Walter is dead; and Katharine de Brewes, aged 30 years and more, survives. The manor is held of the lord de Bardolf by service of a pair of gilt spurs at Easter.
