169.	ANTHONY DE LUCY.
	Writ of precipimus, 16 February, 49 Edward III.
LINCOLN.	Inq. (indented) taken at Boston, Wednesday after St. Gregory, 49 Edward III.
	Skirbek. He was seised of no lands &c. in the county on the day of his death because he alienated in fee simple the manor and advowson of Skirbek and all other his lands &c. in the county, together with his knights’ fees and advowsons, to Richard de Askeby, parson of the church of Werkyngton, William de Stodfold, parson of the church of Deen, and Robert de Evenwode, parson of the church of Angreham. Joan his daughter and heir was a minor in the king’s wardship by reason of lands &c. in Cumberland held of the king in chief, and during her minority the king presented his clerk, John de Saxton, to the church of Skirbek, claiming that presentation in right of the said heir, and John was admitted by the bishop of Lincoln and instituted at the king’s presentation. Joan died while a minor in the king’s wardship, and Maud wife of Gilbert de Umframvill, earl of Angos, sister of the said Anthony and aunt of the said Joan, is now Anthony’s next heir. She is 30 years of age. William de Stodfold, the survivor of the above grantees, granted the said manor and advowson and all other the premises to the said earl and Maud and the heirs of Maud, and during their possession released to them all his right therein. The said Anthony died in 42 Edward III, but at what time the jurors know not, because he died beyond seas. The grantees mentioned above had possession of the premises from the date of his death, and the earl and Maud from the date of the grant to them.

170.	WILLIAM LUFFEWYK of Manton.
	Writ of precipimus, 24 June, 49 Edward III.
RUTLAND.	Inq. taken at Uppyngham, Monday after the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 49 Edward III.
	Langham. Two-thirds of a messuage and a virgate of land, held of Humphrey, earl of Hereford and lord of Langham, by service of 2s. yearly rent and by suit to the two great courts of Okham every year. Manton. Two-thirds of a messuage, 2 cottages, 5 virgates of land and two-thirds of a windmill, held of the earl of Warwick, one bovate by knight’s service, [amount not known], as of his manor of Berghdon, and the residue in socage, rendering to the said manor 2s. yearly or ……. . Ridlyngton. A toft and 2 virgates of land, held of the earl of Warwick, and formerly of Peter de Monte Forti, by suit to two courts of Ridlyngton every year. Glaston. A messuage, a virgate of land, a cottage and 8s. rent, held of the earl of Warwick [by suit] to the hundred of Wrangdyk twice a year. Normanton. A messuage and 1 1/2 bovates of land, held of Sir John Basynges by service of 5 …………… of St. John the Baptist for all services. On Monday before St. Laurence, 46 Edward III, he gave all the premises to Richard de Piriton, [William de] Ridlyngton, master of the chantry of Manton, Henry Hudde, parson of the church of Berghby, and John de Wympton, and afterwards went beyond seas. He died on Tuesday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 47 Edward III. Elizabeth Luffewyk, his daughter, aged 3 years and more, is his heir. The grantees mentioned above have had possession of the premises ever since the gift to them, and have received all the issues and profits thereof except 33s. 9d. which Simon le Warde, lately the king’s receiver at Okham, levied unjustly and without title from the tenements in Langham against the form of the above gift. [The gift] was made before the death of Humphrey de Bohun, late earl of Hereford, then lord of the castle of Okham and manor of Langham.

171.	ROGER LOVEDAY.
	Writ, Rokyngham, 10 September, 49 Edward III.
CAMBRIDGE.	Inq. taken at Great Wilburgham, 15 October, 49 Edward III.
	Great Wilburgham. A toft, 80a. land, 3a. meadow and 3 customary tenants, with the liberty of a court every three weeks, held of the king in chief by serjeanty, to wit, keeping a sparrowhawk, and by service of 12d. yearly for sheriff’s aid; and a messuage, 150a. arable and 25s. rent, held in parcels of the earl of Richmond, the prior of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, and others, services not known. In 36 Edward III, without the king’s licence, he enfeoffed Richard Garlond, clerk, John Waryn of Purle, William atte Walle, William Bedel and others of the premises; and afterwards the king by letters patent pardoned the said feoffees their trespass in acquiring the said 80a., and moreover granted them licence to enfeoff the said Roger and Amy his wife thereof, to hold to them and the heirs of Roger; whereupon the said feoffees enfeoffed them accordingly of the said 80a. together with all other the lands &c. aforesaid. So the said 3a. meadow and 3 customary tenants (each of whom holds a messuage and 15a. customary land) were alienated on two occasions without the king’s licence. The said Roger died about the feast of St. Margaret last; the jurors do not know the day because he died in Essex. Margaret his sister, aged 30 years and more, whom John Simond has married, is his next heir.

172.	NICHOLAS LOVEYNE, knight.
	Writ, 12 October, 49 Edward III.
CAMBRIDGE.	Inq. taken at Newmarket, 13 November, 50 Edward III.
	Ditton Camoys. The manor, held for life jointly with Margaret his wife, likewise deceased, with remainder to William de Pulteneye, knight, deceased, and Margaret his wife, who survives, and the heirs of their bodies, and with remainder over to the right heirs of the said William, by grant of John bishop of Worcester and William de Chirchehull, clerk, by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of a pair of gilt spurs. Date of death unknown. John son of Robert de Pulteneye, aged 24 years and more, kinsman of the said William de Pulteneye, is next heir to the manor after the death of Margaret formerly the wife of the said William, whom John de Pekkebrigg, knight, has now married.

OXFORD.	Inq. taken at Cherlebury, Wednesday before St. Thomas the Apostle, 49 Edward III.
	Barton St. John. The manor, held jointly with Margaret his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs of his body, with remainder to William bishop of Winchester, John de Penbrugg, knight, John Colpeper, and Richard Mafe, and their heirs. The manor is held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Staunton St. John. The manor, held for life jointly with Margaret his wife, who survives, with remainder after their deaths to Henry, Richard and Thomas, sons of Sir Henry de Beawmond, for their lives or until they be preferred to some ecclesiastical benefice, and if they be not so preferred, then after their deaths to the heirs of the body of the said Nicholas, and, failing such heirs, to the right heirs of the said Henry, Richard and Thomas, a third part to the heirs of each. The manor is held of the king in chief by knight’s service. He died on Monday before Michaelmas last. Nicholas his son, aged 5 years and more, is his heir.

SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Chalughton, 14 October, 49 Edward III.
	Chalughton. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster, as of his manor of Sombourne, by service of a pair of spurs worth 6d. yearly. He died on 3 August last. Elizabeth Lestraunge, his daughter, aged one year on the feast of St. Nicholas last, is his heir.

SALOP.	Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, 27 October, 49 Edward III.
	He was a minor in the king’s wardship. He held:— Whitchirche. The manor (extent given), held of the heir of the earl of Surrey by service of taking the earl’s venison at the earl’s expense. The extent includes a park with deer, two fairs yearly at Whitsuntide and the feast of SS. Simon and Jude, and a market every Monday and Friday. Dodynton. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Chesewardyn. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Straunge Betton. The manor, held of Roger Lestraunge of Knokyn by service of a pair of white gloves at Easter. This manor he held, not of his mere right, but by virtue of an office taken at Neuport before John de Perton, late escheator, whereby through lack of information it was found that he was the next heir of Margaret late the wife of Hamon Lestraunge of Chesewardyn, who last died rightly seised thereof, whereas in fact the manor was entailed after her death on Fulk Lestraunge and the heirs of his body, and the said Fulk, now deceased, has two daughters still surviving, to wit, Joan and Eleanor, to whom the manor should remain under this entail. 	Whitchirche and Dodyton. The manors, charged with dower in favour of Isabel his wife. (The amounts of the charges are illegible.) Chesewardyn. The manor, assigned to the said Isabel by way of dower. Straunge Betton. He held this manor on the day of his death, but not of his mere [right]. Joan wife of John Carles and Eleanor ………. ., daughters and heirs of Fulk Lestraunge, sued out their right in the king’s court, and now have seisin of the manor by the king’s writ, by virtue of an entail (as above). Endorsed:—Sum total of the extent of the premises (except the manor of Straunge Betton), 102l. 11s. 10d., wherewith Richard earl of Arundel is charged, as is contained in the Treasurer’s Memoranda of 51 Edward III among the Recorda of Hilary term, rot. 8.

ESSEX.	Inq. taken at Coggeshale, Saturday after St. Lucy, 49 Edward III.
	Merkeshale. The manor (extent given), in the town of Merkeshale, with the advowson of the church, held for life in joint feoffment with the said John, deceased, with reversion to his heirs. It is held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Dovre, by service of 10s. yearly. She died on Monday after St. Martin last. Thomas Merkeshale, aged 7 years about All Hallows last, is John’s son and next heir.

175.	WALTER DE MAUNY, knight.
	Writ of precipimus, 28 October, 49 Edward III.
CALAIS.	Inq. taken at Calais, before Hugh de Calviley, captain of Calais, 15 December, 49 Edward III.
	The said Walter held in fee of the king in chief by the king’s charter all the tenements and void plots which before the conquest of Calais belonged to John Morel, doing watches and other services like the other tenants. He also held in fee two shops which he granted to a chamberlain of his called Simon Trois Deniers for life, with reversion to himself and his heirs. Of the said tenements and void plots John de Hastinges, late earl of Pembroke, and Anne his wife have had and occupied one tenement and a void plot in Lanternestret, (the plot lying between the shops formerly of William de Scampston on the south and the tenement formerly of Richard le Vache, knight, on the north), since Walter’s death, as the inheritance of the said Anne, his daughter and heir, doing one watch in lieu of all services, the repair and maintenance to be done at the costs of the lord, and they have received the profits by the hands of their attorneys. Margaret late the wife of the said Walter had and still has by way of dower after her husband’s death another tenement and three shops, held in the same manner as the preceding. She still has possession of them, and receives the profits by the hands of her farmers. Date of death not known. The said Anne is his daughter and heir, and is of full age.

	Fersley and Shelff. The manors, held of the king in chief by service of. 1d. yearly. He died on 25 July last. Joan de Mirfeld, one of his sisters, and John de Mirfeld, son of Margaret de Mirfeld his other sister, are his next heirs, both over 40 years of age.

177.	MATTHEW SON AND HEIR OF ROBERT MASERER, spicer.
	Writ of precipimus. The mayor is also to make enquiry as to the lands &c. granted, bequeathed or charged by the said Matthew for chantries or alms or other divine offices. 8 January, 49 Edward III.
LONDON.	Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 15 January, 49 Edward III.
	He died on Monday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 49 Edward III, seised of:— Parish of St. Stephen in Colmanstret. 7 shops and 5 solars, with free entry of an alley belonging thereto. Immediately after his death Roger Frysby, parson of the church of St. Michael-le-Quern (ad Bladum), Thomas Whitcherche, tawyer, John Symond, William Horwode, Roger Elys, chandler, and John Ferby entered thereon, without title, as the jurors understand, and still have possession of them and receive the issues. The premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London. Matthew has no heirs surviving, so far as the jurors can ascertain.

BEDFORD.	Inq. taken at Bedeford, 18 April, 49 Edward III.
	The following came to the king’s hands by the death of John Marchal of Wotton and by reason of the minority of Thomas his son and heir, and are still in the king’s hand, to wit:— Wottone. A garden, 24a. arable, 1 1/2a. meadow and 12a. 1 1/2r. pasture, held of the king in chief by service of a fiftieth part of a knight’s fee. A messuage, a dovecot, 182a. arable, 7a. meadow, 38a. pasture, 48a. wood, 40s. 5d. rent of assise, 10 capons and a hen of rent, a moiety of a windmill, and a view of frankpledge once a year, held of the lord de Mounbray of Haxholm by service of a rose yearly at Midsummer. The said Thomas died on Monday the morrow of the Annunciation last. Maud his sister, aged 26 years and more, whom Walter Merwe (fn. 1) has married, is his heir.

	Meldebourne. A manor called ‘le Argentems’ (extent given), with appurtenances in Meldebourne and Melreth, held of Sir William Latymer by knight’s service and service of 5s. yearly. She held it for life by way of dower after the death of John de Argentem, sometime her husband. She died on Wednesday before St. Mary Magdalen last. John de Argentem, knight, her son, aged 50 years and more, is her heir.

HERTFORD.	Inq. (indented) taken at Hicch’, 9 August, 49 Edward III.
	Great Wylmundele. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by serjeanty, to wit, by service of serving with a cup at the king’s coronation with the citizens of London. She held it in dower after the death of John Dargentem, her first husband. Little Wilmundele. The manor (extent given), held in dower of the king in chief, as of the honor of Aumale, by service of 20s. yearly for ward of Cravene; 60a. land annexed to her free chapel of Little Wylmundele, held of the heirs of John Blumvyle by service of 12d. yearly and common suit of court; 2a. land late the site of a mill, held of the same John by service of 2 1/2d.; a toft and 100a. land, part of the barony of Benyngton, held of Richard Brokesburne by service of 2s. yearly and an eighth part of a knight’s fee; and a messuage and 80a. arable, held of the heirs of Richard Punchardon by service of 2s. 2 1/4d. for a fourth part of a knight’s fee. She died on 18 July last. Heir as above.

	Kyngestanlegh. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service by grant of Robert de Samborn, Henry Tyngewyk and John de Coston, chaplains, by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence, to her and John Mautravers, sometime her husband, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to John son of Richard earl of Arundel and Eleanor daughter of John son of the said John Mautravers and the heirs of their bodies, and with remainder over to the right heirs of the said John son of the earl. Wodecestre. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held in form aforesaid and by the same fine of the earl of Salisbury by knight’s service. Stonhouse. The manor, held in form aforesaid and by the same fine of the bishop of Worcester by fealty. Shurdynton. The manor, held in form aforesaid and by the same fine of James de Audelegh, knight, lord of Baggeworth, by service of a pair of gilt spurs or 6d. Munchenhampton. A carucate of land, 12a. meadow and 100s. rent, held in form aforesaid and by the same fine of the abbess of Caen by knight’s service. She died on 20 July last. Heir not known. She died without issue by the said John Mautravers.

SOMERSET.	Inq. taken at Yevele, Friday before St. Katharine, 49 Edward III.
	Hyneford. The manor, and 57s. rent in Yevele, held of the earl of March by knight’s service, and settled by grant as above (last inquisition) on her and her issue by John Mautravers, the elder, her husband, with successive remainders to John son of Richard earl of Arundel and Eleanor daughter of John son of John Mautravers, the elder, and the heirs of their bodies, to John Mautravers, son of John Mautravers of Crawell, and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of John Mautravers of Lycchet. She died on Wednesday the feast of St. James last, without issue by the said John Mautravers. Heir not known.

	Estmordon. The manor, held [of the king in chief by service of 8s. yearly by the hands] (fn. 2) of the sheriff. She held it by grant as above (Gloucester inquisition) to her and her issue by John [Mautravers, the elder], (fn. 2) with remainder to [John son of Richard earl of Arundel and Eleanor daughter of] (fn. 2) John son of the said John Mautravers and the heirs of their bodies, and with remainder over to the right heirs of the said John Mautravers, the elder. Codeford. The manor, held in form aforesaid and by the same grant of the king in chief by knight’s service. Stapelford. A moiety of the manor, held in form aforesaid and by the same grant of the king in chief by knight’s service. Boyton. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held in form aforesaid and by the same grant of the earl of Salisbury by knight’s service. Corton. The manor, held in form aforesaid and by the same grant of Miles de Stapelton, knight, by knight’s service. She died without issue by the said John on Tuesday, 24 July last. Heir not known.

SUFFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at [Bec]kles, Tuesday, the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 49 Edward III.
	Wiset. The manor (extent given), held of the king, as of the honor of Richemund, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee, by gift of Edmund de Berford to her and John de Nerford, knight, her second husband (John Mautravers being her third), and the heirs of John de Nerford. The extent includes a park with deer and the profits of a leet and tourn. She died on 15 July last. Margery wife of John Brewes, daughter of John de Nerford son of Thomas de Nerford brother of the said John de Nerford, knight, aged 17 years and more, is the latter’s kinswoman and next heir.
NORFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Longstratton, Tuesday after St. Bartholomew, 49 Edward III.
	Schotesham and Therston. The manors (extents given), held of the lady Margaret late the wife of Sir John Segrave, knight, by service of 2 1/2 knights’ fees, by gift as above (Suffolk inquisition). Date of death and heir as above, Thomas de Nerford being described as a knight.

SUFFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Hallesworth, Tuesday after St. Dunstan, 50 Edward III.
	Wysete. The manor, held for life of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee, as of the inheritance of John de Nerford. She died on Wednesday the feast of St. James last. Margery daughter of John de Nerford, aged 18 years and more, is her next heir.
NORFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Long Stratton, Wednesday the eve of Ascension Day, 50 Edward III.
	Therston and Shotesham. The manors, held for life of Margaret countess of Norfolk by service of 11 3/4 knights’ fees, as of the inheritance of John de Nerford. Date of death and heir as above.

	Imbeham. A moiety of a plot so called, held of the bishop of Salisbury by service of 7(?)s. yearly, being parcel of the manor of Loslee, half of which is in the king’s hand by the minority of John son and heir of the said John. Hamon, rector of the church of Fynchamstede, has had possession of it ever since John’s death, by what title the jurors know not, and has sold wood therein to the value of 5 marks. John died four years ago, day not known. The said John his son, age not known, is his heir.

	Northtoftes. The manor, held jointly with Amy his wife, also deceased, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to his right heirs. It is held of Sir John de Nevill, as of his manor of Claveryng, by service of half a knight’s fee. Fynchyngfeld. 18a. land, 1 1/2a. wood and 3a. pasture, held of the church of St. Paul’s, London, as of its manor of Boytonhall, service not known; 1a. 1r. land, held of Roger Toly, service not known; 3 1/2a. land, held of the same Roger, service not known; and 6a. land, held of John Repechon, service not known. (Unspecified). 53a. land, 3 1/2a. meadow and 2a. pasture, called ‘Hildirshams’ and ‘Shaldfordes,’ held of the manor of Northtoftes, service not known. Dagenham. The manor, held jointly with his said wife of the abbess of Berkyng, service not known. He died on Monday before All Saints, 46 Edward III, and Amy on Tuesday before All Saints, 48 Edward III. Emma, aged 10 years, and Florence, aged 6 years and more, daughters of William his son, are his next heirs. The abbess of Berkyng and Nicholas Cumspoll have had possession of the premises ever since the death of Amy, by what title the jurors know not.
