281.	Isabel, late the wife of Hugh Tyrell
	Writ to the escheator in cos. Wilts and Hants to enquire as to the tenure of a messuage, 2 carucates of land and a mill in Fenny Sutton, 4l. rent in Cossele and Whitebourne, and 26s. 8d. rent in Swaleweclyve, which the said Isabel was found by inquisition taken after her death before John Froill, late escheator in co. Wilts (see Vol. XII, No. 419), to have held in joint feoffment with Walter atte Berghe, her former husband, to wit, to them and the heirs of Walter; as the jurors of the said inquisition had no knowledge as to the tenure of the same, and the inquisition made no mention of the heir. The escheator is also to enquire as to the lands held by the said Isabel in Hants, and who is her next heir, and who has been in possession of the said lands since her death and received the issues; as John atte Berghe, son and heir of the said Walter, has represented that she held divers lands in that county in joint feoffment with the said Walter, but that no inquisition with regard to them was taken or returned into Chancery after her death. 25 January, 3 Richard II.
WILTS.	Inq. taken at Dounton, 12 February, 3 Richard II.
	Fenny Sutton. The premises referred to in the writ are held of Robert de Asshton by service of a fifth part of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Cossele and Whitebourne. The rent referred to in the writ is held of the prioress of Stodley by service of 4s. 6d. yearly. Swaleclyve. The rent referred to in the writ is held of the earl of Hereford by service of a fifteenth part of a moiety of a knight’s fee. John atte Bergh, son of the said Walter and Isabel, aged 22 years and more, is Walter’s heir.

SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. taken at Fordyngbr’, 12 February, 3 Richard II.
	She held the under-mentioned manor and land for life in joint feoffment with the said Walter, to them and the heirs of Walter. Chartford and Secchevyle. The manor, held of the earl of Salisbury by service of a third part of a knight’s fee. Hertele Candevere. A carucate of land, held of the duke of Lancaster by service of a twentieth part of a moiety of a knight’s fee. She died on 25 October, 43 Edward III. Heir as above. Since her death the aforesaid Hugh Tyrell has occupied the premises and received the issues and profits thereof, by what title the jurors know not.

283.	Margaret, late the wife of Robert Tibetot, knight
	Writ: 7 April, 3 Richard II
LEICESTER.	Inq. taken at Melton Moubray, Tuesday after St. George, 3 Richard II.
	She held the under-mentioned manor, messuage and land in fee tail, to wit, to her and the said Robert and the heirs of their bodies. Edemersthorp. The manor (extent given, including 38s. rent of free tenants in the towns of Edemersthorp and Wymondham, 5 messuages and 5 virgates of land held in bondage in the same towns, and a messuage in Stapelford), held of the duke of Lancaster by knight’s service. Barkeston. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the lord de Roos by knight’s service. She died on 2 April last. Margaret, Millicent and Elizabeth, her daughters by the said Robert, aged respectively 14 years, 12 years and 10 years, are her heirs.

LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Lincoln, Monday the feast of St. George, 3 Richard II.
	She held the under-mentioned manor, messuage and land in joint feoffment with the said Robert de Tibetoft, her late husband, in fee tail, to wit, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with the king’s licence. Eston. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. Merston. A messuage and 4 bovates of land, held of the princess of Wales by knight’s service. A yearly rent of 1/2 mark is due to the princess for the premises. Date of death (at Oxendon, co. Gloucester) as above. Heirs as above.

NOTTINGHAM.	Inq. taken at Byngham, 19 April, 3 Richard II.
	She held the under-mentioned manor and advowson in her demesne as of fee. Langar. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, held of the king, as of the honor of Peverel, by knight’s service and a yearly rent of 10s. The extent includes 34 a. meadow in the meadows of Langar and Berneston, a croft called ‘Shypeneyerd,’ 62l. 10s. rent of assise of bondmen and cottars payable at seven terms, to wit, at the four Ember Wednesdays and at Easter, Michaelmas and Martinmas, a service called ‘aid of bondmen’ worth 25l. 18d. yearly, two views of frankpledge and two common ovens in Langar and Berneston. Date of death and heirs as above.

NORTHUMBERLAND.	Inq. taken at Corbrygg, 25 January, 3 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned parts of manors etc. for life by the courtesy of England after the death of Maud, his wife, daughter of John de Stafford. Bentone. A fourth part of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee. Staynton. A fourth part of the manor (extent given, including a fourth part of the hamlet of Belasiis), held of the king in chief by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee. Wytton Bythewatre. A sixth part of the manor (extent given), held of Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, by service of a sixth part of a knight’s fee, as of the barony of Benley. Wyngates. A sixth part of the town, held of the same earl by service of a sixteenth part of a knight’s fee, as of the barony of Benley. He died on Trinity Sunday last. Rees ap Gryffyht, knight, aged 40 years and more, is kinsman and next heir of the said Maud, to wit, son of Joan sister of Elizabeth her mother.

288.	William Wynter
	Writ to the escheator to enquire as to lands and heir of the said William, who is said to have held by knight’s service of the alien priory of Newent, which is in the king’s hand on account of the war with France. 24 October, 3 Richard II.
GLOUCESTER.	Inq. taken at Newent, Tuesday after All Saints, 3 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. in his demesne as of fee. Newent. A messuage and 24 a. arable, held of the alien priory of Newent by homage and fealty and service of 6s. yearly, and by such service that every heir after his ancestor’s death shall, if a minor, be in the prior’s wardship without rendering any scutage, and, if of full age, shall pay relief, to wit, double the rent of one year. He died on 12 April, 48 Edward III. Robert Wynter, aged 17 years and more, is his son and heir. William ‘of the Hull’ and John Wynter, chaplain, have occupied the premises and received the issues thereof since his death, by what title the jurors know not.

	Writ of Devenerunt, 22 November, 3 Richard II
NORTHUMBERLAND.	Inq. taken at Newcastle upon Tyne, Thursday before St. Hilary, 3 Richard II.
	He held the under-mentioned parts of manors, reversions and lands etc. in his demesne as of fee. Newton by the Sea. Two-thirds of a moiety of the manor, with the reversion of the other third part of the said moiety held in dower by Christiana formerly the wife of the said John by his endowment. An extent of the whole moiety is given, and includes lands etc. of small value because of the pestilence, and tenants named Agnes Cowgate, Robert Burges, John son of Alice, and Alice and Margaret, daughters and heirs of John Lange. Hibbourne. Two-thirds of a moiety of the manor, with the reversion of the other third part of the said moiety held in dower as above. The extent includes lands of small value because of the pestilence. Hibbourne. Two-thirds of 3 husband-lands, with the reversion of the other third part thereof held in dower as above. Yherdill. Two-thirds of 3 husband-lands, 6 a. land and meadow, and 4 cottages, with the reversion of the other third part of the same held in dower as above. The premises are worth nothing by the year because wasted by the Scots. And there are there two-thirds of a water-mill, together with the reversion of the other third part held in dower as above. They are worth nothing for the above cause. All the above moieties etc. are held of the king in chief by knight’s service. [Yherdill]. Two-thirds of 2 carucates and 36 a. land and meadow, together with the reversion of the other third part of the same held in dower as above, held of the barony of Werk in socage by service of a rose at Midsummer. They are wasted as above. Est Decheburn. 8 husband-lands, held of the lord de Bello Monte in socage by service of a rose at Midsummer. Alnewyk. A cottage, held of Sir Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, by knight’s service. Ellyngton. A messuage and 18 a. land, held of the lord de Welles in socage by service of 1 lb. pepper at Christmas. He died on Wednesday before the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 3 Richard II. John Syward, aged 30 years and more, Robert de Hibburn, aged 24 years and more, John Grame, aged 30 years and more, [Margery daughter and heir of Robert de Hibburn], (fn. 1) aged 3 years, Margery wife of Richard de Wetewang, aged 40 years and more, Elizabeth sister of the last named Margery, aged 36 years and more, Margaret formerly the wife of Thomas Sampson, aged 34 years and more, and Agnes sister of the said Margaret, aged 30 years and more, are his heirs.

ESSEX.	Proof of age of the said William, son and heir of Henry de Coggeshale, knight, and Joan his wife, both deceased, taken at Halstede, 26 July, 3 Richard II.
	The jurors say that the said William was 21 years of age and more on 20 July, 3 Richard II, as follows:— John atte Rothe, aged 44 years, says that William was born at Codham and baptized in the church there on 20 July, 32 Edward III; and this he knows because he bought a messuage and 40 a. land in Great Henye from Robert atte Fen, and was enfeoffed thereof by a charter of feoffment dated Sunday after St. Peter’s Chains, 32 Edward III. Nicholas Couisepol, aged 60 years, agrees and says that Avice his daughter was born on the feast of St. Michael, 32 Richard II, and her age was written in a missal of the church of Fynchyngfeld. Roger Smyth of Sturmere, aged 41 years, agrees and says that Isabel his daughter was born on the feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross, 32 Edward III, and her age was written in a missal in the church of Sturmere. William Bret, aged 50 years, agrees and says that he bought 1 a. land in the town of Sturmere from John Hakkesolte, and was enfeoffed thereof by a charter of feoffment dated 20 July, 32 Edward III. John Palmere, aged 40 years, agrees and says that at the time of the birth he was a servant of John de Coggeshale, knight, grandfather of the said William, and went with William de Wauton, knight, to the church of Codham for the baptism. John Noreys, aged 45 years, agrees and says that he was under bond to John de Coggeshale … by a bond dated 20 July …. Gilbert Skreyk, aged 50 years, agrees and says that Walter Ba … enfeoffed him of a field called ‘Bataille Feld’ … after the feast of St. Margaret the Virgin, 32 Edward III. Henry Clerk of Pebemerssh, aged 40 years, agrees and says that John Clerk of Schaldeforde, his father, caused him to be apprenticed ……… Schaldeford in the trade of a saddler by a covenant contained in certain indentures dated Monday … [St. Peter’s] Chains, 32 Edward III. Gilbert Cole, aged 42 years, agrees and says that he was in wardship with John Haukwode, the elder, and received his inheritance of lands etc. in the town of Hengham Sibille from the said John on Sunday before Midsummer day, 32 Edward III, before the birth of the said William. William Howe, aged 54 years, agrees and says that …… enfeoffed him of 14 a. land in Wetheresfeld by a charter of feoffment dated 8 October, 32 Edward III. John atte Wode, aged 53 years, agrees and says that John his son was born and baptised in the church of Schaldeford on Monday before St. Margaret the Virgin, 32 Edward III, and his age was written in a [book] of the said church. Thomas Bret, aged 46 years, agrees and says that he, Robert … and Robert atte Hel were bound to John de Coggeshale, knight, grandfather of the said William, … for the farm of the manor of Sturmere by a bond dated … 32 Edward III.

	Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Arnold, the lands of whose inheritance are in the king’s custody. 8 September, 3 Richard II.

KENT.	Proof of age taken at Sythynbourne by Bobbyng, Thursday after St. Mark, 3 Richard II.
	William Hersyng of Bobbyng, aged 44 years and more, says that the said Arnold was born in the manor of Bobbyng and baptized in the church of St. Bartholomew there; and that Robert Chayne, knight, John Chelesworth, late parson of the church of Bokton Malerbe, and Margery the wife of William Mol … were his godparents. He is 21 years of age and more, to wit, since the Nativity of the Virgin Mary last. This the deponent knows because he has a daughter named Idonia who was born on the feast of Corpus Christi before the birth of the said Arnold. Robert Taillour, aged 58 years and more, agrees and says that between Easter and St. Peter’s Chains before the birth of the said Arnold he had a house called a ‘carthous’ made in his messuage at Bobbyng, with a stable annexed thereto, and that was 21 years ago at St. Peter’s Chains last. William Warner of Bobbyng, aged 50 years and more, agrees (adding that Arnold was baptized by John Marchal, then vicar of Bobbyng, the deponent himself being present), and says that he has a son called Peter who was born in Whitsun week before the birth of the said Arnold, and Peter was 21 years of age at Whitsun last. Laurence Hogon, aged 42 years and more, agrees and says that on … after All Saints after the birth of the said Arnold he married Alice daughter of John Moris in the church of Borden, and that was 21 years ago at All Saints last. John Holte, the elder, aged 48 years and more, agrees and says that he has a son John who was born about the Nativity of St. John the Baptist after the birth of the said Arnold, and that will be 21 years ago at the same feast next to come. Robert Kaym of Bobbyng, aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that on the feast of the Holy Trinity 21 years ago he married a woman called Rose in the church of Bobbyng, and the said Arnold was born on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary following. John Spicer of Bobbyng, aged 43 years and more, agrees and says that he has a son called Robert who was born at Bordenne in the last week of Lent before the birth of the said Arnold, and Robert is now 22 years of age. Simon Brounyng, aged 52 years and more, agrees and says that he was farmer of John Donet of his tenements in Tonstall called ‘Stokeles,’ and withdrew from the said farm at Michaelmas after the birth of the said Arnold and had an acquittance from the said John dated 5 October, 32 Edward III. William Brekenoke of Bobbyng, aged 41 years and more, agrees and says that at Easter next after the birth of the said Arnold he had a son called John born, who is now 21 years of age and more. Simon Alayn, aged 46 years and more, agrees and says that within 3 weeks from Easter next before the birth of the said Arnold he married Desoria daughter of Robert Wilderton in the church of Tonge, and that is 22 years ago. John Michel of Bobbyng, aged 38 (?) years and more, agrees and says that on the morrow of Michaelmas next after the birth of the said Arnold he married Katharine daughter of William Honiworth, and that was 21 years ago on the morrow of Michaelmas last. John Barbour of Bobbyng, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that on Monday after the feast of St. Mark next before the birth of the said Arnold he married Maud his present wife, and that was 22 years ago on the feast of St. Mark last.

	Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Maurice (fragment).
[GLOUCESTER].	Proof of age (fragment).
	Thomas de Rodele, aged 44 years and more, says that the said Maurice was born at Ule and [baptized in the church there on the morrow of the feast of Corpus] Christi, 32 Edward III; and this he recollects because he had a ………, 32 Edward III, and by the death of the said Joan he recollects etc. Richard Chansy, aged 52 years and more, agrees and says that … 32 Edward III he married a woman named Alice, and so he is sure [that the said Maurice is] 21 years of age. Thomas Clayvill, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says ……… of Ule he fell to the ground and broke his left arm. Thomas Drayfite, aged 44 years and more, agrees and says ……… Ule at farm to a certain Richard Snart for 30 years. Thomas Daunt, aged 46 years and more, agrees … (remainder torn away).

	Joan de la Rye
	Writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to certify the king in the Chancery concerning the cause of the taking into the king’s hand of a fourth part of 2 cottages, of a croft, of 4 bovates of land, of 3 a. meadow and of a plot of pasture in Coryngham, late of John Cokerell, kinsman and one of the heirs of Roger de Scoter. 6 November, 1 Richard II.
	Certificate by the treasurer and barons that on searching the rolls and memoranda of the Exchequer it is found in the roll of particulars of the account of Master Richard de Clare, late escheator on this side Trent, from Michaelmas, 13 Edward II, to the following 22 February, that a fourth part of a croft, of a plot of pasture, of 2 cottages, of 4 bovates of land and of 3 1/2 a. meadow in Coryngham, co. Lincoln, which fourth part Joan de la Rye held in dower of the inheritance of the heir of Roger Scoter, was taken into the hands of Edward II by the death of the said Joan and by reason of the minority of John son of John Cokerel, kinsman and one of the heirs of the said Roger, a minor in the wardship of Edward II. 	Writ to the escheator,—on a petition from John Cokerell of Mollecroft, kinsman and heir of Roger Scoter, that he may have livery of the said fourth part as his inheritance,—to enquire what estate the aforesaid Joan had therein, to whom the reversion thereof ought to pertain, and who has been in possession and received the issues since Joan’s death. 26 April, 3 Richard II.
LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Kyrton in Lindesei, Saturday the morrow of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 4 Richard II.
	Coryngham. Joan de la Rye held a croft, a plot of pasture, 2 cottages, 4 bovates of land and 3 1/2 a. meadow in dower after the death of Matthew de la Rye, her husband, the reversion belonging to the heirs of Roger de Scoter, knight. Roger acquired the premises in fee from the said Matthew after the latter had married the said Joan. James Jordain, Robert Ingelberd, John Cokerell and John Bondebi were Roger’s kinsmen and heirs at the time of his death, and the reversion of a fourth part of the premises ought to belong to the heirs of the said John Cokerell. The said fourth part contains 18 a. land and is held of the lord de Roos of Hamelak by knight’s service, as of the castle of Bever. The said Joan died on 12 January, 12 Edward II. John Cokerell of Mollescroft, aged 28 years and more, son of Robert Cokerell son of John Cokerell son of John Cokerell son of Margaret Cokerell, sister and one of the heirs of the said Roger, is heir of the said Roger as regards the aforesaid fourth part, and also of the said John son of Margaret. Richard de Duffeld, Robert de Belton, clerk, and others, have been in possession of the fourth part and received the issues thereof since the death of Joan by letters patent of the king and his progenitors.

	Writ of Mandamus, 5 February, 3 Richard II
NOTTINGHAM.	Inq. taken at Sibthorp, Tuesday the feast of SS. Gervase and Protasius, 3 Richard II.
	She held the under-mentioned messuage etc. Sibthorp. A messuage, 8 bovates of land and 4s. 4d. rent, held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Peverel, by suit to the court of Peverel every three weeks and by bearing a mazer before the king when he comes to her house at Sibthorp. She died on the feast of St. Nicholas, 32 Edward III. William, her son, aged 21 years and more, is her heir. William, parson of the church of Houghton, has occupied the premises since her death by the king’s grant.

	Writ of Plenius certiorari touching the estate which the said Joan had in the premises. 20 January, 5 Richard II.
NOTTINGHAM.	Inq. taken at Newerk, Wednesday in Easter week, 5 Richard II.
	She had an estate in fee, to herself and her heirs, in the premises in Sibthorp by hereditary right after the death of Simon de Sibthorp, her grandfather. She held them of the king, as of the honor of Peverel, by knight’s service and other services unknown.

BEDFORD.	Proof of age (fn. 2) of the said Robert [whose father] held by knight’s service of the heir of John de Moubray, knight, a minor in the king’s wardship. Bedford, …, 3 Richard II.
	Robert Parentyn, aged 50 years and more, says that the said Robert is [22 years of age and more], and was baptized in the parish church of Turveye on Thursday before [All Saints], 29 Edward III; and this he knows because at the same time he had a brother John baptized [in the same church, who] is 22 years of age and more. …, aged 48 years and more, agrees and says that on the day of the baptism Roger Mauncell, his father, was buried in the church of Turveye, and that was 22 years ago. Thomas atte Brugge, aged 52 years and more, agrees and says that on the day of the baptism … Riche his brother, when working as a plumber on the said church, fell to the ground and broke his back. Richard Bykke, aged 53 years and more, agrees and says that on the day of the baptism he married Alice Rysyng his wife in the said church. Thomas atte Halle, aged 49 years and more, agrees and says that on the day of the baptism he had a son John dead and buried in the said church. Henry Wattes, aged 46 years and more, agrees and says that on Monday after the said feast of All Saints he married a certain Felicia … in the parish church of Carleton in the same county, and took her home to Turveye the same day. John Cok, aged 48 years and more, agrees and says that at the same time he had a son Richard baptized there, who is now 22 years of age and more. Richard’s godfather was Robert Roche, clerk, who is [? godfather] of the said Robert, and so Robert is clearly of full age. John Blancost, aged 47 years and more, agrees and says that in the week of Robert’s birth Richard his brother was drowned in the water flowing under the bridge of Turveye. William Whytyng, aged 48 years and more, agrees and says that at the same time he had a son Walter born and baptized there, who is now 22 years of age and more. Richard Davy, aged 49 years and more, agrees and says that at the same time he had a daughter Joan born and baptized there, who is now 22 years of age and more. Thomas Hardy, aged 54 years, agrees and says that on Tuesday after the said feast of All Saints Roger his son, who is now 44 years of age, celebrated his first mass in the church of Turveye. John Henewyk, aged 58 years and more, agrees and says that in the week of Robert’s birth he had a daughter Alice married to Richard Riche of Turveye, and she has been married for 22 years and more.

LEICESTER.	Inq. taken at Halughton, Monday the morrow of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 3 Richard II.
	The said John and Margaret held the under-mentioned messuage etc. for life, by gift of Edward III, the reversion belonging to the king and his heirs. Wythcok. A messuage, a carucate of land now barren and uncultivated, 5 marks rent service and 3 lbs. pepper rent service, (tenure not stated). Margaret survived John and died on 20 April last. (Heir not given).
