| DORSET. | Certificate by the escheator that, because it was found by an inquisition taken before Adam atte More, late escheator, and also by another inquisition taken by himself, that Thomas de Neubergh, knight, grandfather of the said John, without the king’s licence demised certain lands etc. in Wynfred Neubergh which are held of the king in chief to divers tenants, to hold of him and his heirs for life, therefore the said lands etc. were seized into the king’s hand and remain there, as appeared by the account of Thomas de Wellyngton, late escheator, and also by the said inquisition taken by himself; and that because John de Neubergh, knight, son and heir of the said Thomas, died in his (the escheator’s) time in seisin of the fee of the said lands etc., the aforesaid John his son and heir being a minor, therefore he (the escheator) arrested the said heir and detained him in the king’s hand as his ward. |

Katharine, aged 22 years and more, and Maud, aged 17 years and more, daughters of Robert Ruydyng and Isabel, his wife, sister of the said William, are next heirs of the said William. |

He held no lands etc. in the county on the day of his death, because long before his death, with the king’s licence, he granted the under-mentioned manor of Dronfeld to Robert de Wyclef for life, for good service, saving the reversion to himself and his heirs. After his death and the death of Joan, his daughter and heir, the said Robert held the manor until August, 45 Edward III, and then died, whereupon the late king immediately seized the manor, as of the right of Mary daughter of the said Joan and kinswoman and heir of the said John, she being then a minor, and granted it by letters patent [Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1370–1374, p. 154] to Thomas Duraunt until the full age of the said heir.
John died on 20 January, 27 Edward III. Mary the wife of John de Roos, aged 14 years and more, is his next heir, as above. The aforesaid Thomas Duraunt has occupied the manor ever since the death of Robert Wyclef, as stated above. |

She died on the eve of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 43 Edward III. Mary de Percy, aged 14 years and more, whom John son of Thomas de Roos of Hamelak has taken to wife, is next heir of the said John Orbi and Margaret, to wit, daughter of Joan, their daughter. Alice de Perers and the earl of Northumberland have occupied the premises ever since the death of Margaret, by what title the jurors know not. Date of death as above. Mary, daughter of Joan daughter and heir of the said John and Margaret, aged 14 years and more, is their next heir. She is married to John de Roos, son of Thomas de Roos of Hamelak. After the death of Margaret the late king committed the custody of the premises until the lawful age of the heir to Alan de Boxhull, knight, who demised his estate in the manor to Alice Perers, now the wife of William de Wyndesovere, knight. Alice received the issues from the time of the king’s grant until 4 December, 1 Richard II, when the king seized the manors into his hand, for what cause the jurors know not, and committed the custody of the premises to the earl of Northumberland, who has been in possession and received the issues ever since. |

The said Gilbert and James de Lacy acquired the under-mentioned 6 messuages etc. in Kemele and Morlegh from Henry Percehay and Michael Skyllyng, to hold to them and the heirs of the said Gilbert. Subsequently Gilbert released all his right therein to James and his heirs, so that he had no estate therein when he died. La Brodetoune. The manor, held of the king, as of the honor of Walyngford, by knight’s service, except a messuage and a virgate of land which are held of Geoffrey Casterton, as of his manor of Stanmere, by service of 3s. yearly. Kemele and Morlegh. 6 messuages, 3 carucates of land, 30 a. meadow, 7 a. pasture, 12 a. wood, 8s. rent and a rent of 1 lb. pepper, held of the abbot of Malmesbury by knight’s service. He died on Tuesday before St. Mark last. The above-mentioned Hugh is dead. Thomas le Despenser, aged 8 years and more, is kinsman and next heir of the said Hugh to whom the reversion of the manor of Brodetoune belongs, to wit, son of Edward son of Edward his brother. |

Walter atte Trewen, the elder, gave the under-mentioned messuage etc. in Lamerton and rent etc. in Whytechurche to him and the heirs of his body, saving the reversion to himself and his heirs. He died seised of such estate therein, without heir of his body; and Walter the elder died seised of the reversion. From Walter the elder the reversion descended to William, his son and heir, and from William to William atte Trewen, his son and heir, who was 21 years of age on Friday after Holy Trinity last.
Lamerton. A messuage, 1/2 a. garden, 100 a. arable, 6 a. meadow, 100 a. moor and waste, 56s. rent, a court and 20 a. wood and underwood. Whytechurche. 4l. rent and a court. All held of Edward Courtenay, earl of Devon, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. The said Walter named in the writ was a bastard, and died without heir of his body on the feast of St. Nicholas, 1 Richard II. Inasmuch as he held the premises of the said Edward Courtenay, as of the castle of Plympton, and because the said Edward was then a minor in the king’s wardship, Richard Kendale, late escheator, seized the premises into the king’s hands. William atte Trewen, son of Walter, died 20 years ago; and Hugh Courtenay, late earl of Devon, grandfather of the above Edward Courtenay, because the said William son of Walter died in seisin of the manor of Were and held it of him by knight’s service, seized William, son of the said William son of Walter, and granted his marriage and wardship, together with the custody of all the lands etc. held of him (the earl) in the county of Devon, including the premises, to William de Luscote, to whose daughter Joan the said William son of William was married 10 years ago. William Luscote took the profits of the premises after the death of the said Walter named in the writ by virtue of the king’s letters patent, and died after the feast of St. George last. Thoraldeby. A messuage and 4 bovates of land. Skyrpenbek. A messuage and 2 bovates of land. All held of Walter Chauncy, baron of Skyrpenbek, by knight’s service. He died on 30 March, 27 Edward III. Robert Crok, aged 30 years and more, son of William Crok son and heir of Denise his sister, is his heir. The premises were taken into the late king’s hands on 1 November, 31 Edward III, by William de Nessefeld, late escheator, because of their having been alienated without licence by Walter Chauncy, baron of Skyrpenbek, who held them in chief of the king’s progenitors, to Jordan de Bretton, ancestor of the said William de Thoraldeby, the younger, and by reason of the minority of the above-mentioned heir; and John de Gerewardeby occupied them by grant of the late king from the day of the death of the said William until the lawful age of the said Robert, rendering to the king 15s. yearly by the hands of the sheriff. The late and present kings have received the issues and profits of the premises since the death of William, by the hands of the sheriff, for the aforesaid causes. |
