The under-mentioned messuages etc. in Ippesden and Stoke Basset constitute the manor of Ippesden, and were demised by the said William (except the 60 a. wood) to Walter Garston and Ellen, his wife, for the term of their lives, and to their executors for a year afterwards, at a yearly rent of 10 marks, as well as ‘housbote’ and ‘heibote’ in the said wood. William was of full age at the time of the said demise. Afterwards, long before his death, he granted the reversion of the premises, and the said rent of 10 marks, by the name of the manor of Ippesden, to Thomas Chambernon, Otto Bodrygan, John Colyn, Thomas Cotesford, clerk, and James Gervays, and their heirs, and Walter and Ellen attorned to them and paid them the said rent. So William held no lands in demesne or service except the aforesaid 60 a. wood.
Ippesden. A messuage, a carucate of land, 6 a. meadow, 60 a. wood, 6 messuages, 3 virgates of land and 16s. rent, held of the king, as of the honor of Walyngford, by homage, but the jurors know not the amount of service. Stoke Basset. 3 messuages, 3 virgates of land and 5s. rent, held of Thomas Peverel, services not known. He died on Friday the morrow of SS. Simon and Jude, 7 Richard II. John his son, aged 8 years, is his heir. |

He was seised of no lands etc. in the county on the day of his death except 60 a. wood in Ippesden. He was lately seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned messuage, etc., but long before his death, to wit, in 48 Edward III, gave them to Walter atte Garston and Ellen, his wife, for their life and for one year after their death, at a yearly rent of 10 marks, with power to take great and small timber in the above 60 a. wood for the upkeep and repair of the said messuage by view of the said William or the representative of him or his heirs. Since William’s death the said Walter and Ellen have had possession of the said rent.
Ippesden. A messuage, a carucate of land, 5 a. meadow, 16s. rent, with the said 60 a. wood, held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Walyngford, by knight’s service, amount not known. He died on Tuesday before All Saints, 7 Richard II. John Basset, his son, aged 10 years and more, is his heir. |

On Wednesday the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 6 Richard II, he gave the under-mentioned fee of the marshall and manor of Tyhydy (except the advowsons of the churches of St. Illogan, St. Mareadocus and St. Euninus by Redruth which pertain to the manor of Tyhydy) to Thomas Chambernon, Otto Botrygan, John Colyn, Thomas Cottesford, parson of the church of St. Illogan, and James Gerves for the term of their lives, on condition that, if his daughters or any one of them should be unmarried at his death, then the said grantees should give and pay 100l. for the marriage of each daughter, and that, if his daughters or any one of them should die unmarried after him, then whatever ought to be given for the marriage of such daughters or daughter should be given in alms for the souls of himself and Margaret, his wife, and their ancestors; and the said condition was openly declared on delivery of seisin to the said grantees. On the same day he gave the under-mentioned manor of Trevalga to the same grantees for the life of Margaret, his wife, and they afterwards re-enfeoffed him and Margaret of all their estate therein, by virtue of which Margaret holds the manor.

(Fourteen jurors.) She died seised in her demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned site etc. and 4 messuages etc.
Canewik. The site of the manor and 2 cottages, 4 vacant plots, 140 a. land, 6 a. meadow and 10s. rent of assise, held of the king in chief by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee, except 110 a. which are held of the lady Lestraunge of Knokyn by service of 6s. 8d. Lincoln. 4 messuages, 2 gardens, a vacant plot, a shop and 22s. rent. The messuages, gardens and shop are in the hands of tenants at will, of whom John Ratheby, John de Rasen, Richard Bayouse and Agnes late the wife of John de Hawardby each hold a messuage, Richard Raulynessone holds the shop, and Richard de Plesyngton and William Smyth each hold a garden. She also died seised as of fee and freehold of a messuage in Lincoln demised by her writing for 40 years. Each of the above messuages, shop, gardens and plot is held of the king in chief by service of 1d. yearly called ‘lantolpenyes’ to be paid to the bailiffs of the city in aid of their farm. She died on Friday before All Saints last. Aubrey, son of John de Wytelbury and Maud his wife, one of her daughters, aged 11 years and more, and Elizabeth wife of Thomas de Brunham, her other daughter, aged 22 years and more, are her heirs. |

She died seised in her demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor of Canewik with its appurtenances. She also died seised in her demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned messuages and tenements in Lincoln by virtue of a release thereof made to her by Robert her son, son and heir of the said Walter, and enrolled in the king’s court in the city of Lincoln in 4 Richard II.
Canewik. The manor; whereof a moiety and 23 a. land are held of the king in chief by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee, and the other moiety and 117 a. land are held of the lady le Straunge of Knokyn by service of 6s. 4s. yearly. Lincoln. A messuage in the parish of St. Martin held by John Carbonell, who has an estate therein by indenture for the term of 25 years from the date of this inquisition; a shop held by Richard Raulyneson; a messuage on the bridge of Lincoln held by Agnes Hawardby; a messuage held by John de Raytheby; a messuage held by John de Rasyn; a garden held by William de Plesyngton; a messuage held by Richard Bayous; and a vacant garden by ‘le Barregate.’ All the above tenants except John Carbonell are tenants at will, and the tenements are held of the king by service of 5d. called ‘lantolfpenyes’ to be paid to the bailiffs of Lincoln in aid of their farm. Date of death as above. Heirs as above, except that Maud is described as the late wife of John de Wytelbury and Elizabeth’s age is given as 21 years and more. |

Orframinna late the wife of Walter de Poynton died seised in her demesne as of fee of the following:—
Canewyk. Premises as above (last inquisition but one). Lincoln. 4 messuages, 2 gardens etc. as above (last inquisition but one), except that the shop is said to be vacant for lack of a tenant, and the rent of 22s. is said to be payable as follows:—9s. from a tenement held in fee by William Skepper, 5s. from a tenement held in fee by Sir John Holt, knight, 8s. from a tenement on the bridge of Lincoln held in fee by the prior of St. Katharine without Lincoln, and 2s. from a tenement held in fee by Alice Salter. After the death of Orframinna the premises descended to her heirs mentioned above (last inquisition but one). Elizabeth died on Tuesday after St. Gregory last, aged 22 years and more. Elizabeth, her daughter by the said Thomas de Brunham, aged 2 years and more, is her heir. Thomas is 30 years of age and more. The said Thomas and Elizabeth were seised of all the premises from the time of the death of Orframinna until the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle last. By an inquisition taken at Lincoln on that feast by virtue of a writ of diem clausit extremum on the death of Orframinna the premises were seized into the king’s hands and are still there. |

Brompton Regis. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. He died on 28 November, 6 Richard II, without heir of his body. Peter Besyls, his kinsman, brother of John his father, aged 21 years and more, is his heir. The king had possession of the manor from the time of his death until it was granted by letters patent, date not known, to William Englyssh. So the king has received the issues thereof until now by the hands of Richard Otery, late escheator, and William Englyssh. |

Rotcote. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. Date of death as above. Heir as above, aged 21 years on the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 8 Richard II. Since his death Katharine late the wife of Thomas de Besils, knight, has had possession of the said two-thirds of the manor by the king’s letters patent. |

Belnebrakton. A messuage and a virgate of land, held of Thomas le Botyler, kinsman and heir of John de Suydeley, knight, late a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service. She died on 24 February, 2 Richard II. William de Bradeford, son of the said Henry and Margaret, was her heir. He was 3 years of age at the time of her death, and died on 20 May, 5 Richard II, a minor in the king’s wardship. Margaret, daughter of the said Henry and Margaret, is sister and next heir of the said William. She is 22 years of age and more, and was married 4 years ago. Since the death of Margaret wife of Henry the king has had possession of the premises and received the issues by reason of the wardship of the aforesaid Thomas, and they are let at farm by him to John de Fekenham. |

He held the under-mentioned lands etc. in his demesne as of fee, in addition to those specified in the inquisitions taken after his death.
Whytelwode. ‘Housbote’ and ‘heybote’ in the forest, held as parcel of the manor of Sylveston by the serjeanty of tasting the king’s wine when he chances to sojourn there. The present king has had possession of the said ‘housbote’ and ‘heybote’ since John’s time, without title. Sylveston. A cottage, held of the prior of Luffeld by service of suit to the said prior’s court of Sylveston twice a year. The cottage was waste and valueless from the time of John’s death until Michaelmas, 5 Richard II, since when John Adam of Sylveston has had possession and received the issues, title not known. Sylveston. 3 plots of pasture named ‘Leverichstokkyng,’ ‘Blodhangerstokkyng’ and ‘Berneyerd,’ held by service of suit to the king’s court at Sylveston once a year and by serjeanty as above. The abbess of Burnham has had possession of them since John’s death, title not known. Wodeblacolvesle. A third part of a messuage with a third part of two crofts adjacent thereto lately held by William Mayheu. The said third parts are held of the king in chief by service of suit to the sheriff’s tourn held at Norton twice a year. Braundeston. 26s. 8d. rent from a messuage, a carucate of land and a watermill held for life by John Aleyn by demise of the deceased. The said messuage, carucate and mill were returned by Simon Warde, late escheator. They are held of the lord de Roos by service of 3s. 1d. yearly. John Assheby has had possession of them since the death of the deceased by virtue of the king’s letters patent. John de Braundeston died on Thursday before the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 33 Edward III. Thomas Wolfencote, aged 50 years, son of Joan sister of Richard his father, John Assheby, aged 40 years, son of Margaret sister of the same Richard, Agnes de Foxle the wife of Adam Chete, aged 34 years, daughter of John son of Olive sister of the same Richard, and John Mably, aged 26 years and more, son of Agnes daughter of the above Margaret, are his heirs. |

William de Elmham had the custody of the land and heir of the said John and Cecily by the king’s commitment, and has had possession of the lands and received the issues thereof since the death of Cecily. |

Derteforde. 5s. 3d. yearly from the princess Joan in respect of amercements and other profits of the view of frankpledge held there twice yearly; a fourth part of a third part of 23s. 11d. yearly farm from divers parcels of meadow in the salt marsh there which are at times submerged by the sea; and the reversion of a fourth part of a third part of 15l. 6s. 1d. yearly rent which Margaret late the wife of Thomas Graunson, knight, holds for life in dower by endowment of the said Thomas, with reversion to Roger and his heirs. He held all the above of the king in chief by homage and fealty and service of a fourth part of a third part of 1d. yearly. He died on 3 January, 3 Richard II. Roger son of Roger his son, aged 20 years and more on 22 March last, is his heir. Reynold de Grey of Ruthyn, knight, has received the said rent by letters patent of the king granting him the custody of all the lands etc. from the time of the death of Roger until the lawful age of his heir, for a certain farm to be rendered yearly. |

John Heywode, aged 55 years and more, says that the said Roger is 21 years and more, having been born at Bletenesho and baptised in the church there on Sunday after St. Laurence, 36 Edward III. This he knows because on Monday after Easter week in the same year he married his wife.
John Clerkesson, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that his brother died and was buried in the churchyard of the said church on Monday after St. Laurence in the same year. Robert Parentyn, aged 43 years and more, and Richard Ledere, aged 60 years and more, agree and say that John Parentyn, Robert’s father, was buried on Thursday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in the same year, and Richard was at the burial, and the chaplain of Bletenesho told them of the birth of Roger. John Prat, aged 46 years and more, and John Wodeham, aged 50 years and more, agree and say that John Prat’s son John, who is 21 years of age and more, was born on the same day as Roger, and John Wodeham was his godfather. John Danyell, aged 51 years and more, John atte More, aged 48 years and more, John Stratton, aged 52 years and more, and John Kyng, aged … years and more, agree and say that Roger father of the said Roger asked the rector of the church to write the day and year of the birth in the missal there, which was done. William Coppelewe, aged 41 years and more, and Robert Ammory, aged 50 years and more, agree and say that Agnes, William’s wife, was buried at Bletenesho on Thursday after St. Laurence in the same year, and Robert was at the burial, and there they were told of the birth by the rector of the church and others. Reynold de Greye of Ruthyn was warned to be at the said proof of age, but neither he nor anyone on his behalf could shew cause why the lands of Roger’s inheritance should not be delivered to him. |

The town, held of the barony of Alnston, service not known. There is no chief messuage in the town, nor any demesne lands, meadows, pastures, feedings, woods, watermills or windmills; but there are rents of 14l. from free and bond tenants and 2 views of frankpledge. Hemyngton. The manor (extent given), held of the lord Beaumount by knight’s service. Braundeston. The manor (extent given), held of the bishop of Lincoln, service not known. He died on 3 July last. He held the under-mentioned manor and fourth part in his demesne as of fee, and in his lifetime, to wit, on Thursday the feast of the Ascension, 6 Richard II, granted a yearly rent of 40l. therefrom to Ralph de Crumwel, knight, Master Richard de Wynwyk, canon of Lincoln, Master Peter de Dalton, rector of the church of Surflete, Ralph de Adyrle, the younger, and William Stevenson of Kyrketon, their heirs and assigns, and put them in seisin by a payment of 4d. He also demised the manor to Ralph de Crumwel, knight, Matthew Redman, knight, William de Wyum, Master Peter de Dalton, rector of Surflet, Thomas de Pynchebek and Richard de la Laund, their heirs and assigns, for 20 years from Whitsun, 6 Richard II, at a rent of a rose at Midsummer, and all the tenants of the manor attorned to the said grantees by virtue of that demise. The grantees are not to be impeached or impleaded by John or his heirs for any waste committed in the manor. He also granted a yearly rent of 60s. and a robe from the said manor to Thomas de Pynchebek for life, for his good counsel. He also granted the office of hayward and the tolls of the market place and the water of Surfletskore, parcel of the said manor, worth 100s. yearly, to John de Cressi ‘warner’ for life in 49 Edward III.
Risgate. The manor, with a fourth part of the manor of Braytoft parcel thereof, held by service of paying 40s. to the king by the hands of the sheriff, as by socage and petty serjeanty. The houses of the manor are so ruinous that 10 marks yearly must be spent on them for repair, as well as 10 marks yearly for the repair of the walls, gutters, sewers and dykes of the sea and marsh, and other charges incumbent on the manor. The manor is worth 10 marks yearly in all issues (fn. 1). He died on Saturday before St. Bartholomew. Hugh, his son and next heir, is a minor aged 9 years. |

She held the under-mentioned manor of Wykedyve in joint feoffment with Henry her late husband, because a certain John Dyve, by a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the quinzaine of Trinity, 16 Edward III, granted the reversion thereof expectant on the demise of Martha late the wife of Henry Dyve, father of the said John, to Thomas Bygge, parson of the church of Hethorp, and John de Herdewyk, and the heirs of the latter, whereupon the said Thomas and John de Herdewyk, by a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in a month of Easter, 17 Edward III, granted the said reversion to the aforesaid John Dyve for life, with successive remainders to John de Leukenore, knight, for life, to Henry, son and heir of the said John Dyve, and Elizabeth daughter of the said John de Leukenore, and the heirs of their bodies, and to the right heirs of John Dyve. Henry and Elizabeth entered the manor after the death of Martha, John Dyve and John de Leukenore, and were seised thereof until Henry demised the same to Roger de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, (whose grandson and heir Roger, son and heir of Edmund de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, is a minor in the king’s wardship) and Ralph Spigurnell, knight, for their lives. After the said demise, Henry released all his right in the manor to the said Roger and Ralph and the heirs of Roger, and died without heir of his body by Elizabeth. Afterwards, to wit, after the death of Henry and Roger the late earl, Elizabeth married Edward de Twyford, knight, and they made suit touching the above alienation by writ of cui in vita in the king’s court at Westminster in Easter term, 35 Edward III, and recovered the manor against Ralph, the life tenant, and had the issues thereof. After the death of Ralph and Edward, Edmund son of Roger the late earl, being seised of the reversion, by his writing indented ratified and confirmed the estate of the said Elizabeth in the manor, to hold the same in accordance with the effect of the fine and recovery aforesaid, being intendant to him and his heirs by fealty touching the reversion of the manor. So Roger the late earl died in seisin of the manor in his demesne as of fee, and Edmund died in seisin of the reversion; and the reversion of the manor after the death of the said Elizabeth and Ralph pertains to Roger son and heir of the said Edmund, a minor in the king’s wardship.

After his death John Gobyon and Joan, his wife, late the wife of John Moriell aforesaid, entered into the premises in right of the said Joan without receiving seisin from the king, and held them until Joan’s death on the feast of St. Barnabas, 3 Richard II. Joan also died in seisin of a plot of marsh called ’ Estlond ’ in Bradewell, held by knight’s service of the manor of Bradewell, which manor was in the king’s hand at the time of her death because of the minority of Mary, daughter and heir of John de Orreby, knight. She held no lands in her demesne as of fee of the king in chief, or of others, in the said county. But John Beauchamp of Somerset, knight, lately her husband, was seised in demesne as of fee of the manors of Hacch Beauchamp, Stok under Hamedon and Stoklynch, a moiety of the manor of Shepton Malet, the advowsons of the churches of Shepton Beauchamp, Hacch aforesaid and Stoklynch Maudeleyn, and divers other manors, lands and advowsons in the county of Somerset and elsewhere, and after his death about Michaelmas, 35 Edward III, all his manors etc. were seized into the king’s hand because the aforesaid manors of Stoke and Hacch and the manor of Welweton were held of the king in chief. Afterwards, the under-mentioned manors etc. were assigned in Chancery to the said Alice as her dower of all the manors etc. late of the said John.
Stok under Hamedon. The manor, and the advowson of the church of Shepton Beauchamp, held of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of Beauchamp. Stoklynch. The manor, and the advowson of the church of Stoklynch Maudeleyn, held of John de Moune, as of his castle of Donsterre, service not known. Shepton Malet. A third part of a moiety of the manor, which manor is held of the abbot of Glastonbury, service not known. Afterwards the said Alice, in her pure widowhood in the time of Edward III, granted all her estate in her said dower to William Beauchamp of Warwyk, her brother, William de Burton, knight, Henry de Dardern and John Norhamton, clerk, and while they were in seisin thereof John de Meryet, knight, kinsman and one of the heirs of the said John Beauchamp, to wit, son of Eleanor, John’s sister, released to them all his right to the reversion of a moiety thereof and bound himself and his heirs to warranty, as is contained in a writing of release shewn to the jurors and dated 26 May, 47 Edward III. Afterwards, for a fine made in the Chancery, the king pardoned the said grantees their trespass in acquiring the estate of Alice and the reversion of John de Meryet in the manor of Stoke and advowson of Shepton aforesaid, which were held of the king in chief. Afterwards, Matthew de Gourney, knight, married the said Alice, and William de Burton, Henry de Dardern and John Norhamton died. Alice died on Tuesday the eve of SS. Simon and Jude last. Thomas de Beauchamp, earl of Warwick, aged 40 years and more, is her brother and heir. The lady Cecily Turbervyll, aged 50 years and more, is the other sister and heir of the aforesaid John Beauchamp. The said William Beauchamp had possession of the said dower and received the issues by himself and his parceners until the death of Alice, by virtue of the grant and release aforesaid. Since her death he has had possession of a moiety thereof and received the issues. |

He held the under-mentioned messuages etc. in his demesne as of fee.
Gyslyngham and Thornham. 2 messuages, 200 a. arable, 4 a. meadow, 10 a. wood and 30s. rent, held of William de Ufford, late earl of Suffolk, as of the honor of Eye, services not known. He was a bastard and died without heir of his body on Friday after St. Peter’s Chains, 2 Richard II. The said earl had the honor of Eye by the grant thereof made by Edward III to Robert de Ufford, late earl of Suffolk, his father, in tail male; and after his death, because he died without heir male of his body, the honor reverted to the present king. The late earl never seized the premises in his time after the death of the said John, so they ought to be seized into the king’s hand as an escheat. Richard atte Chirche and Katharine, his wife, have had possession of the premises since John’s death and received the issues, except for a parcel of land, amount not known, of which John Weylond has had possession for the last two years. |
