455. William Spygornell
Writ, 3 September, 10 Richard II
HERTFORD. Inq. taken at St. Albans, Monday after the Conception, 10 Richard II.
William Spygornell, father of the deceased, was seised in fee of the under-mentioned land, pasture, wood and rent, and gave them to Hugh Carpenter, chaplain of the chantry of Dagenhale, who gave them to him and Joan his wife and the heirs of his body, with remainder to Richard la Vache and his heirs. The deceased was the issue of the said William Spygornell and Joan, and after his father’s death entered into the premises and was seised thereof in fee. Richard la Vache is dead, and Philip la Vache, knight, is his son and heir. The said Joan is still living.
Bareworth. 28 3 1/2 a. arable, 9 a. pasture and 10 a. wood in the hamlet of Bareworth in the parish of Stodham, and 63s. 6d. rent of assise from divers tenants there; whereof 131 1/2 a. land are held of the prior of Dunstaple by knight’s service, and the residue of the land, pasture and wood is held of the lord de Morle by knight’s service.
William Spygornell, the son, died on 25 August last, without heir of his body. Lucy, his father’s sister, aged 30 years and more, whom William Alberd has taken to wife, is his aunt and next heir in blood.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Shefford, Monday after Michaelmas, 10 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned lands &c.
Holwell. A toft, a carucate of land and 6s. 8d. rent, held of Robert Belknap in socage and by service of 5s. yearly. The premises are charged with a yearly rent of 56s. 5d. to the prior of Caldewell, Gerard Braybrok and others.
Wypsnade, Dunstaple and Eyton. 2 messuages, 4 tofts, 40 a. land, 10 a. pasture and 12s. rent, held of the prior of Dunstaple by service of a rose at Midsummer.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Ayllesbury, Saturday after St. Matthew, 10 Richard II.
The deceased held no lands &c. in the county except as follows.
After the death of William Spygurnell, his father, he intruded into the under-mentioned lands &c. over the possession of Joan his mother, who held them in fee tail to her and the said William her husband and the heirs of the said William’s body, with remainder to Richard la Vache, knight, and his heirs, by reason of a gift made by Hugh Carpenter, as above (Hertford inquisition). Joan is still living, and was in possession of the said lands &c. until the deceased by usurpation intruded therein in contravention of the aforesaid entail.
Dagenhale. The manor, held of the prior of Dunstaple by homage and fealty and service of 6s. 8d. yearly.
Ivyngho. A watermill, held of the king in chief at fee-farm by service of rendering 20s. at Michaelmas by the hands of the sheriff. It is decayed and worth nothing.
Stodham and Dagenhale. 28 a. land and 4 a. wood, held of the prioress of St. Giles by service of 13s. 4d. yearly; 18 a. land, held of the prioress of Markyate by service of 5s. yearly; a messuage called ‘Brayes’, 30 a. land and 4 a. wood, held of the prior of Caldewell by service of rendering 14d. yearly to the king by the hands of the prior and 2s. 8d. yearly to the prior; and 3 a. land and 1 a. meadow, held of Nicholas Fitz Hugh by service of 9d. yearly.
Edlesburgh. 8 a. land, held of Ingoldes Fee by service of 12d. yearly; and 5 a. meadow, held of the prior of Caldewell by service as above.
Dagenhale. 50 a. land, held of the prior of Dunstaple, service not known.
Dagenhale and Stodham. A toft, 80 a. great wood and 6 a. land, held of the king in chief by knight’s service and the service of rendering 1 lb. cummin at Martinmas.
Loughton. The manor, held of John Frome of Bukyngham by service of scutage and doing suit to the court of the earl of Ormond twice a year.
Date of death as above. Heir, Lucy wife of William Alberd, as above.
Memorandum that—notwithstanding the finding of the above inquisition that William Spygornell, the son, held no lands &c. in the county of Buckingham on the day of his death, save by intrusion into certain lands and rents over the possession of Joan his mother, still surviving, who held the same jointly with William Spygornell, the father, her husband, to them and the heirs of the said William (sic)—nevertheless it seemed to the justices and other learned persons of the king’s council now in the Chancery that the said William Spygornell, the son, died seised in fee of the aforesaid lands and rents, and that William Alberd and Lucy his wife, aunt and heir of the said William, the son, ought to have livery thereof, inasmuch as it is found of record in the rolls of the Chancery that the said lands and rents were taken into the hand of Edward III by the death of William Spygornell, the father, and by reason of the minority of William, the son, and were demised at farm to the said Joan until the lawful age of the last-named William, and that afterwards, on proof of the age of the said William, they were delivered to him in due form by the present king. In consequence of the above decision the said lands and rents were delivered to William Alberd and Lucy, as appears in the rolls of Chancery of 10 Richard II. He died on Monday before the Purification last. Philip Seynclere, knight, his son, aged 21 1/4 years and more, is his heir.

He held the under-mentioned manors jointly with Mary his wife, to them and his heirs, by gift and feoffment of Robert atte Mulle, Thomas de Glene and Henry atte Grove.
Jevyngton and Hegthton. The manors, with the advowson of the church of Jevyngton, held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Laigle, by knight’s service.
Brambeltye and Lavertye. The manor of Brambeltye, held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Laigle, by knight’s service. The manor of Lavertye, held of the lord de la Ware, as of his manor of Isefeld, by knight’s service, except 2 a. land which are held of John Boyly by service of 4d. yearly.
Date of death as above. Heir as above, aged 21 years and more at the time of his father’s death.

Writ to the escheator to assign dower to Mary late the wife of the said John in the presence of Philip Seyntcler, knight, his son and heir, or the attorneys of the said Philip. 19 June, 10 Richard II.
SOMERSET. Assignment of dower made at Cheselburgh, Wednesday after Michaelmas, 11 Richard II. The said Philip was summoned, but did not appear.
The following are assigned to her.
Cheselbergh. An oxhouse, a pigsty, a third part of the garden, the advowson of the church of the manor at every third turn, a third part of the profit of the fair held there on the feast of St. Luke, a third part of the profit of the court, a third part of the profit of the quarry, and the lands, rents, customs and services of specified tenants.
Tenants named:— John Kynghorn, Thomas Brounhey, John Wisman, Peter atte Well, John Bole, Hugh Dene, Nicholas Catewold, Thomas Serle, Thomas Cerle, John Osebourne, John Erneshull, Richard Bakere, Alice Botoun, William Dey, Roger Workeman, Richard Hogges, John Stope, John Brounhey.
Westchinnok. The rents and services of the tenants of the manor, which (with other fees) is held of the manor of Cheselburgh by service of one knight’s fee, together with all wardships, marriages, reliefs and suits &c. pertaining to the manor.
Norton, Vele, Penne and Chilterne Dumere. A third part of the service of the tenants of the manor, with a third part of all the profits thereof.

WILTS. Inq. taken at Salisbury, the feast of St. Barnabas the Apostle, 10 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Borscombe in his demesne as of fee.
He held the under-mentioned two-thirds of the manor of Westwynterslewe for life by gift of Sir Edward le Despenser, with reversion to the said Edward and his heirs.
Borscombe. The manor, held in fee of John Halsham, lord of Colyngbourne Valers, by service of 6d. yearly.
Westwynterslewe. Two-thirds of the manor. A payment of 13l. 6s. 8d. yearly is due from the said two-thirds to Edward de Benstede and his heirs.
He died on 10 December last. Edward de Thorp, his son, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.

Lye. Two-thirds of the manor, held of the abbot and convent of Gloucester by a fee-farm of 4 marks yearly.

HEREFORD. Inq. taken at Rosse, 5 June, 10 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Penyard in fee (sic), to him and the heirs of his body, after the death of Richard Talbot, his father, with remainder to his right heirs if he should die without heir of his body.
He was seised of the under-mentioned manor of Wormelowe in fee until 10 November last, when he enfeoffed thereof Geoffrey Marchal, vicar of the church of Longehope, Thomas de Brugge, William de Aston Yngeyn, John de la Forde, John Perton, Fulk Sprengehose, Thomas Gamage and John Boerleye, to hold to them, their heirs and assigns. The said feoffees still continue their estate in the manor and hundred.
Penyard. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
Wormelowe. The manor, and the hundred of Irchenfeld in the march of Wales, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, amount of fee not known.

Writ, 25 May, 10 Richard II
YORK. Inq. taken at Beverley, Tuesday before St. Margaret the Virgin, 11 Richard II.
On Sunday after the Purification, 51 Edward III, Gilbert Dumframvill, earl of Angos, gave the under-mentioned manor and ferry by his indented charter to the said Thomas for life, with all the fees, rents, services, reversions and other profits belonging thereto, at a rent of 10 marks yearly payable to Robert son of the said Thomas, and the heirs male of his body; and by the same charter granted that after the death of the said Thomas the manor and ferry &c. should remain to Thomas son of the said Thomas and the heirs male of his body, at a rent of 20l. yearly payable to the said Robert and the heirs male of his body, with successive remainders of the manor and ferry to the same Robert and the heirs male of his body and to the earl aforesaid and his heirs. After the death of the earl the said Thomas assigned a third part of the manor and ferry to Maud, countess of Angos, the earl’s wife, as her dower, and so died seised of a life estate in two-thirds of the manor and ferry.
Hesill. The manor, together with the ferry of the river Humber and all profits pertaining thereto, held of Thomas, earl of Kent, as of his manor of Cotyngham, by service of rendering 2s. 3d. yearly.
He died on 21 May last. Thomas his son, aged 26 years and more, is his heir. The said two-thirds of the manor and ferry, together with the reversion of a third part thereof after the death of the countess, ought to remain to the said Thomas son of Thomas.

Writ, 25 May, 10 Richard II
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Corbryg, Tuesday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 11 Richard II.
He was seised of the under-mentioned castle and two-thirds of the manors &c. in fee tail, to him and the heirs male of his body, by virtue of a fine levied in the king’s court. The other third part is held in dower by Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, and Maud his wife, by endowment of Gilbert de Umfravyll, earl of Anguse, sometime husband of the said Maud. The said Thomas was seised of the reversion in fee tail by virtue of the fine aforesaid.
He was seised of the under-mentioned rent, lands &c. in his demesne as of fee.
Hyrbotyll. The castle (castellum), and two-thirds of the manor of Otyrburn, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The premises are worth 100s. yearly and no more, because of the war and the destruction and burning by the Scots.
Otyrburn. The reversion of a third part of the manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Shyrmoundene. Two thirds of the whole manor and town, with two-thirds of the park of Le Helme, 6 husband-lands and 4 cottages in Alewenton, and the free service of two-thirds of all the free tenants in the towns of Alewenton, Clenhyll, Betlysden, Borouden, Sharbyrton, Thyrneham, Angreham, Nedderton and Revely, held of Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, as of the barony of Alnewyk, by homage and a rent of two-thirds of 4 marks yearly. The premises are worth 40s. yearly and no more, because of the destruction and burning aforesaid.
Shyrmoundene. The reversion of a third part of the manor and town, a third part of the park of Le Helme, 3 husband-lands and 2 cottages in Alewenton, and a third part of the free service of all the free tenants in Alewenton, Clenhyll &c. (as above), held of Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, by a rent of a third part of 4 marks yearly.
Westwhelpyngton. 40s. rent to be received yearly from the said town, which town is held of Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, as of the barony of Ovyngeham.
Estwhelpyngton. A tenement and 40 a. land, held freely of the same earl and Maud his wife, as of the barony of Ovyngeham. They are worth nothing in these times because of the war and the destruction by the Scots.
Inghowe. A tenement and a carucate of land, held of the same earl and Maud his wife, in chief by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee. They are worth nothing because of the destruction aforesaid.
The said Thomas died on Tuesday before Whitsunday last. Thomas Umfravyll, knight, his son, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

Writ to the escheator to enquire touching a report that the said John assumed the habit of a religious order while he was a minor in the king’s wardship; and also touching the lands &c. which are in the king’s hand by reason of his minority, and the name and age of his heir. 8 February, 10 Richard II.
DERBY. Inq. taken at Hope, Tuesday in Whitsun week, 10 Richard II.
The said John assumed the habit of religion in the house and order of Friars Preachers at Derby on 21 March, 50 Edward III, and was professed there in the same order on 21 March, 51 Edward III, and is still professed in that order.
The under-mentioned lands &c. are in the king’s hand by reason of his minority, because Thomas his father, who died on Wednesday after the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 43 Edward III, held them of Edward III in chief by knight’s service, as of the castle (castellum) of High Peak.
Hope. One bovate of land.
Castelton and Hope. 3 bovates of land.
The said lands &c. are now held of John, duke of Lancaster, because King Edward III, after his said 43 rd year and before his said 50th year, gave the castle of High Peak, with all its services and other appurtenances, to the said duke of Lancaster in exchange for the county of Richmond; by virtue of which gift the said John son of Thomas attorned to the duke.
William Woderoue, parson of the church of Spofford, aged 50 years and more, is next heir to the said John son of Thomas, to wit, brother of Thomas his father.
Writ to the prior of the order of Friars Preachers of Derby to certify the king whether the said John Woderoue is professed in the said order or not, and if so, when he was professed. 8 February, 10 Richard II.
Endorsed by William Woderoue, prior of the order of Friars Preachers of Derby: The said John assumed the habit of religion on 21 March, 50 Edward III, and was professed on 21 March, 51 Edward III (as in the above inquisition).

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Reyliegh, Saturday after SS. Peter and Paul, 10 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned messuage &c. jointly with Agnes his wife, who died on Monday after St. Andrew the Apostle last, by gift and feoffment of John Plumtre, clerk, now deceased, and William Gene and John Bole, still surviving, to him and the said Agnes and his heirs.
Little Shobury, Northbemflete and Haddeliegh. A messuage, 160 a. arable, 1 a. meadow, 30 a. wood and 20s. rent, held of the king, as of the honor of Reiliegh, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
He died on Thursday after St. Denis, 5 Richard II. John de Wodeham, his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. taken at Stanwelle, Thursday after SS. Peter and Paul, 11 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor in his demesne as of fee.
Stanwelle. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by homage and service of half a knight’s fee. The extent includes lands &c. called ‘Warnerslond’, ‘Gullays’, Simon atte Sonde’s and ‘Gurdones’, let to divers tenants for life. The manor is held of the said castle of Wyndesore by a rent of 7l. 11s. 8d., to wit, 16s. 8d. every 40 days, and 26s. 8d. every 24 weeks for ward of Huntercombe and Bornham, and 3s. 4d. yearly for the release of the suits of four tenants.
He died on 1 May, 10 Richard II. Brian de Wyndesore, his son, aged 15 years on the eve of the Epiphany last, is his heir.

He held the under-mentioned rents.
[Burnham]. 6s. 8d. rent of assise from Nicholas Burnham of Burnham.

The said rents, called ‘Castelwarde’, are held of the king in chief, as of his castle of Wyndesore.

BERKS. Inq. (indented) taken at Westhakebourn, Thursday before SS. Simon and Jude, 11 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned rent.
He held the under-mentioned annuity for term of the life of Clarice wife of John York, by a composition between him (the said Miles) and the said John and Clarice.
Westhakebourn. 65s. rent of assise of free tenants and 68s. 4d. rent of tenants at will, parcel of the manor of Westhakebourn, which manor is held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee.
Westhakebourn. An annuity of 40s. from the residue of the manor.

He held no lands &c. in the county in his demesne as of fee, but he held the under-mentioned manors in service.
Westhorsle. The manor, held by James de Berners, knight, by service of rendering to him 6s. 8d. every 24 weeks.
Pyperharwe. The manor, held by Bernard Brocas, knight, by service of rendering to him 6s. 8d. at the same periods.
Hurtmere. The manor, held by the prior of Newark by service of rendering to him 6s. 8d. at the same periods.
Bagshute. A manor, held by the earl of Kent by service of rendering to him 40d. at the same periods.
Estbury in Compton. The manor, held by William Seward and Sibyl his wife, for the life of the said Sibyl, by service of rendering to him 40d. at the same periods.
Doune. The manor, held by Elizabeth Stonhurst by service of rendering to him 40d. at the same periods.
Longedytton. A manor, held by Geoffrey de Metham by service of rendering to him 20d. at the same periods.
All the above manors the said Miles held of the king, as of his castle of Wyndesore, services not known.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Aulton, 1 August, 11 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned lands &c. in Bromlegh in joint feoffment with Alice his wife, by grant of Ralph Pamphilon and Thomas Chiche, made to him and the said Alice and his heirs.
He held the other under-mentioned lands &c. in his demesne as of fee.
La Mulle. A messuage of ancient demesne, a garden, 130 a. arable, 13 a. meadow, 3 a. wood, a dovecote, a watermill and 4l. 2s. rent, held of the countess of Kent, as of her manor of Aulton, by service of 4l. 5s. 6d. yearly. There are 2 parcels of land pertaining to the said messuage, to wit, one in Froille containing 2 a., held of the abbess of St. Mary’s, Winchester, by service of 7s. 3d. yearly, and the other containing 2 a., held of the abbot of Waverlegh by service of 3s. yearly.
Bromlegh. A toft, 80 a. waste land and 3 a. meadow, held of the Lady Elizabeth de Sancto Johanne by service of 10s. yearly.
La Bere. A toft and 40 a. arable, held of the same Elizabeth by knight’s service.
Bynteworth. A tenement of ancient demesne, 160 a. arable, a garden containing 6 a., 60 a. wood and 11s. rent of assise, held of Sir William Milton, knight, by service of 7l. 13s. 4d. yearly. There are also 3 parcels of land there pertaining to the said tenement, whereof one is held of the rector of Bynteworth by service of 7s. 4d. yearly, another is held of the prior of St. John of Jerusalem in England by service of 4 bushels of wheat yearly, and another is held of Bernard Brokas, knight, by service of 1d. yearly.
Grutham. 20s. rent from a tenement there which is held of others than the king, but of whom the jurors know not.
The said Miles died on 31 March last. Heir as above, aged 15 years and more.

He held the under-mentioned manor and rents in joint feoffment with Burga his wife, who is still living, by gift of Thomas Nytere and John Comelond to him and Burga his wife, and his heirs, by a fine levied in the king’s court in Trinity term, 7 Richard II.

The under-mentioned toft &c. in Bradebrugge, came to the king’s hands by the death of the said Richard, and are still in the king’s hands.
The under-mentioned 100 a. land were seized into the king’s hands after the death of the said Richard Wheghelton, and remained there until the king, by writ directed to John Olyver, late escheator, removed his hands therefrom. The said Richard held the said land jointly with Maud his wife, who is still living, by gift and feoffment of John Germayn and William Ratford, chaplain, to them and the heirs of their bodies.
Bradebrugge in Boseham. A toft, a dovecote, 40 a. land and 1/2 a. pasture, held of the king in socage by service of paying to the king 2 white capons when he rides through that land. The said 40 a. land is worth 10s. only, because the land is charged with 15s. to be paid to the king yearly by the hands of the sheriff for a trespass committed by Roger Papelon, a former tenant thereof, in alienating the land without the king’s licence.
[Boseham]. 100 a. land, held of the countess of Norfolk, as of her manor of Boseham, by a rent of 16s. and 1 lb. pepper yearly. The land is worth 20s. only, because it is submerged by the sea almost all the year.
Richard died on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 7 Richard II. He and Maud his wife had three daughters and heirs, to wit, Elizabeth, then aged 21 years and more, Margaret and Joan. Elizabeth died on 20 August, 9 Richard II. The said Margaret, aged 15 years, and Joan, aged 12 years and more, are her sisters and heirs.

The said Walter was a bastard and died without heir of himself. He held the under-mentioned messuages of the king in chief by service of 19d. yearly at Hilary.

LONDON. Inq. taken before the mayor, 19 October, 10 Richard II.
He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned tenement.
Parish of St. Nicholas in the Shambles in the ward of Farndon Within. A tenement, held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London. The said tenement is now a hall with chambers and a kitchen, a cellar and 3 stables in Pentecostlane, and 2 shops with a solar built over them by the highway in the Shambles. The following sums are payable yearly from the said tenement, to wit, to John Costantyn of London and his heirs 20s., to the dean and chapter of St. Paul’s and their successors 10s., to the master and convent of the hospital of St. Bartholomew in Westsmethefeld and their successors 13s. quit rent, and for the repair of the tenement 26s. 8d.
The said Adam, while of sound mind, by his testament proved, proclaimed and enrolled in the husting of London of common pleas held on Monday the Feast of St. Lucy the Virgin, 35 Edward III, by the name of Adam Langele, citizen and butcher of London, bequeathed the said tenement, by the name of his tenement at the corner of Pentecostlane in the said parish of St. Nicholas, to Emma his wife, for life, and after her death to John his son, for life, and after the deaths of Emma and John for the sustenance of a chaplain to celebrate continually in the said church of St. Nicholas for his soul and the souls of Sir John Middelton, priest, the said Emma, his parents, and all the faithful living and departed. And he willed that the rector of the said church and four trustworthy parishioners thereof should, on every vacancy of the chantry, present a suitable chaplain to the bishop.
After his death the said Emma entered into the tenement and was seised thereof in fee, and died so seised about the feast of All Saints, 3 Richard II, day not known. The said John died during her lifetime. Immediately after her death John Combe, then rector of the said church, and four trustworthy parishioners, names not known, elected William Ingold, chaplain, to the chantry, and presented him to William, then bishop of London. He was inducted and instituted accordingly, and after him John Shuldam and John Haykyn, chaplains, were similarly inducted and instituted. So these three chaplains, by reason of the said chantry, were in possession of the tenement and received the issues and profits thereof from the time of the death of the said Emma until Michaelmas, 7 Richard II, but how long each of them was in possession the jurors know not. At Michaelmas, 7 Richard II, John Baude, now rector of the said church, and Ellis de Weston, Henry Asselyn, John Dorsete, the elder, and Walter Beawi, four trustworthy parishioners thereof, elected John Burton, chaplain, to the chantry, and presented him to Robert, bishop of London. The said John was inducted and instituted accordingly, and has been in possession of the tenement and taken the issues and profits thereof ever since.
The said Adam died about the feast of St. Barnabas, 1361, 35 Edward III, day not known. He has no surviving heirs, so far as the jurors know.
Writ to the mayor of London to send the above inquisition into the Chancery without delay.

WARWICK. Inq. taken at Warwick, Monday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 10 Richard II.
Richard Turvylle, her brother, was seised of the premises in fee, and granted them to her and the heirs of her body, with reversion to himself and his heirs. She continued her seisin therein until she enfeoffed thereof Robert Miles and Hugh Pyrynton, clerk, to hold to them and their heirs. Both she and the said Richard died without heir of their bodies. John de Peyto, knight, kinsman and heir of the said Richard, to wit, son of William son of Joan sister of William father of Joan mother of the said Richard, released all his right in the premises to the said Robert and Hugh and their heirs, and by virtue of the above feoffment and release the said Robert and Hugh had, and still have, full and peaceful possession of the premises. The said Joan never held the premises or any part thereof for life, with reversion to John Dodyngsels, son and heir of John Dodyngsels, knight, late a minor in the king’s wardship, as is alleged by an inquisition taken before Thomas Hore, late escheator.

She died on 26 June, 8 Richard II. She was a bastard, and has no heir because she had no heir of her body, as is aforesaid.
The said Robert and Hugh have had possession of the premises and received all the issues and profits thereof ever since her death.

He held the under-mentioned lands &c. in his demesne as of fee.
Fydok in Taunton. A messuage, a carucate of land, 20 a. meadow and 21s. rent, held of the bishop of Winchester, as of his manor of Taunton, by service of 23s. yearly and suit to his court of Taunton every three weeks.
Dameselem in Staple. A toft, a carucate of land and 10 a. meadow, held of Robert le Fytz Payn, knight, by knight’s service. John Rustelegh has a life annuity of 40s. from the said toft &c.
He died on Thursday before St. Gregory the Pope last. Richard Averay, alias Carewey, aged 40 years and more, is his kinsman and heir, to wit, son of Maud sister of John Roges, his father.

Writ to the escheator—with reference to the above inquisition and on an allegation by John Rustelegh that the said John Roges, by the name of John Rokys, granted the above-mentioned annuity of 40s. to him and Alice his wife, for life, in survivorship, and also granted to the said Alice a tunic with a hood, as well as a fur, or 8s. therefor, to be paid yearly for a certain term, with a clause of destraint in a certain plot of land within the manor of Staple, in return for a plot of land called ‘Dameseleemme’ in the hundred of Abdic in the manor of Staple which the said John Roges purchased in fee from them—to enquire whether the said grant was made by John Roges, and whether it was made to the said John Rustelegh and Alice or to John only. 6 March, 11 Richard II.

The said John Roges, by his writing indented, granted to John Rustelegh and Alice his wife, 48s. yearly for life in survivorship, with a clause of destraint in a certain plot &c. as above.

The said John had no estate in the under-mentioned manor on the day of his death.

The under-mentioned messuage and lands came to the hands of Edward III by reason of the idiocy of the said William, and are still in the present king’s hands for the same cause.
Walburton. A messuage, a garden and 16 a. land, held of Isabel late the wife of Luke de Ponyngges, lady de St. John, as of her manor of Halnacre, by fealty and service of a pair of spurs worth 6d., or 6d.
He died on 2 April, 44 Edward III. Elizabeth wife of Valentine Bramden, aged 40 years and more, is his sister and heir.

505. Peter Tempest
Writ to the escheator—in consequence of a certificate by the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that William Nessefeld, late escheator, took into the hand of Edward III a piece of land and meadow containing 55 a. in Thresk, called ‘Calfhowe’, because he found by an inquisition taken ex officio that Peter Tempest held it of Edward III in chief by knight’s service, and died in parts beyond seas on 3 October, 35 Edward III—to find by inquisition what estate the said Peter had in that land, and who is his next heir and of what age. 6 May, 10 Richard II.
YORK. Inq. taken at Stokesle, 20 July, 11 Richard II.
He held the said land and meadow in fee tail by gift of Richard Tempest, knight, to him and the heirs of his body, with reversion to the said Richard and his heirs.
He died without heir of his body, so that the land and meadow ought to revert to John Tempest, son of the said Richard. The said John is 27 years of age and more.

Writ to the escheator—in consequence of a certificate by the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that William Nessefeld, late escheator, took into the hand of Edward III a messuage and 2 bovates of land in Hoton by Mulgrave because he found by an inquisition taken ex officio that Peter de Malo Lacu, who held them in chief of Edward III by knight’s service, alienated them in fee to Alexander de Hoton without the king’s licence, and that John son and heir of the said Alexander, likewise entered into the premises after his father’s death, and had possession of them all his life without doing homage and the other services due—to find by inquisition when the said John died, and who is his next heir and of what age. 6 May, 10 Richard II.

The said John son of Alexander, who held the said messuage and land in fee tail by gift of Peter de Malo Lacu to Alexander his father died on Monday before the Purification, 14 Edward III. Alan de Yarwith, son of John de Yarwith and Maud his wife, daughter and heir of the said John de Hoton, aged 30 years and more, is next heir of the same John. John de Yarwith had possession of the premises and received all the issues and profits thereof for 10 years after the death of the said John de Hoton, in right of the said Maud his wife. Since then answer has been made to the king for the said issues and profits by the hands of the escheators.
